I know who the new Daredevil is (SPOILERS)

NF makes more sense than hawkeye to me. In that him and DD have an established friendship and nick fury needs to be in hiding.

Hawkeye and DD's relationship is next to non existant and there is no reason form him to want another identity.

That is actually how you would write a transcript down of a Scottish person for someone without the knowledge of the phonetic alphabet mainly everyone. Writing how a person actually sounds not only builds on the character but adds to the realism and authenticity of that character.

Right now I've only picked up fragments of what has been going on here. What issues do I need to pick up to catch up with this story line???

I curious as to how many scottish people you've spoken too.

I found some of the attempts at writing down a scottish accent very offensive in the past.

We can speak english properly (in fact some english professors say that the best english is spoken in the south of scotland).

I know quite a few scottish people as I live in the North of england. Plus I do English Language at collage therefore look a transcripts constantly. Moira McTaggart is from North Scotland so her accent would most likley be quite strong. I think they got hers to a tee.

I've never had a problem with any of the accent portrayals in Marvel. And I've never had a problem understandin' 'em. And if you found them offensive, you need to learn to toughen up...better things to get offended over. Especially when their intention was to add authenticity to a character's background.

Way I see it, when I hear various accents on TV or in movies, then I go to read a Marvel, they did it pretty damn good in translatin' how those accents SOUND into words. Rogue's "Ah" insteada "I", which's exactly how it sounds in the south. "Yuir" instead "Your" fer the Scotts. Again, reads like it sounds.

It adds character to the character. Makes 'em distinctive. It's better than readin' flat English (or in the case of Bendis, the exact same speech pattern) fer every flamin' character. Only one with a constant speech pattern is Storm thus far, who never speaks in contractions (unless written by a lazy writer).

All I hafta say is at least they try to give Nightcrawler one in Ultimate. Comes off a little too much like Svenson at times (Archie, people), but they try.

North of scotland isn't that strong (in that they actually say the words), she's closer to glaswegian as its written down IMO.

Is this meant to be in the Thor thread perhaps???

WOW, did the Hype freak out on me. I didn't even post this in this thread.

Yikes.

But its often done so very badly and sounds nothing like the character would actually speak, moira was an educated doctor and would not sound like like a drunk glaswegian. Its a generalisation and an insulting one at that. It doesn't add to the story for me (actually being scottish) it takes me out of it with a shake of the head thinking "people don't talk like that".

You are right though there are better things to be offended over. :)

plus, i know ur scottish and all, but just becos she's smart doesnt mean she has to speak posher or more well-spoken that the average scot. it doesnt work that way - u dont know her upbringing. it may be a bit cliched, but its better than the writer not making an effort at all..

Can't argue with that there. Reminds me of the time when Hercules was a new show and a friend asked me why they don't even try to do Greek accents or any Greek at all on there. At least there's some effort.

And as stated before, could just regard it as a thick brogue.

Get over it. In most films the English are portaryed as toffs when most are blatently not. I don't get offended nor do I go on rants about how wrong it is.

Scratch that I didn't read the last sentence of your post, sorry.

Heard of Stephen Fry? Apparently all English people sound like him. To my previous question could someone please make me a list of issues of the civil war that I need to get to catch up?

Someone in this thread said she was from the north of scotland, hence I now know she wouldn't speak like that.

You're illustrating my point here btw in saying the average scot speaks like that, we don't.

It is a minor thing, but I disagree with the notion that it adds to the story.

We need more geordies in comics!!!

Does it really take away from it? Stereotypes are sometimes a necessary evil in comic books.

It does take me out of the story so yes.

Oddly enough though I kind of agree with your second point, but I would argue that is only for less talented writers who have trouble distinguishing characters.

anyway I'm derailing the thread so i'll stop. :)

Well a quick rebuttal. Did you like how Moira's accent was handled by Brubaker? You say that its for less talented writers, but what about the "talented" writers who just decide, **** it, I wont even try, like Bendis?

Bendis doesn't try?
Nope.
At all?
Nope.
Wow, that's...I mean, that's just...
Yup.
So nothing?
Not a thing.
Wow.
Totally.
Just...just wow.
Cheese sandwich?

To be honest I can't remember how brubaker handled it, which implies it didn't bother me but it's not something I make a point of remebering specific instances of.

Its just writers seem intent on confusing dialect with accent regularly when it comes to non-white-american characters. (though dialect does include accent I suppose, i'm thinking more in vocabulary terms)

And i do detect bendis giving people their own dialects on occasion ;)

ok, but im saying there's no reason she WOULDNT sound like that. she obviously isnt from the north then. you're argument just seemed to be "she's too smart to sound like an old drunk scot" but if there COULD be people that sound like her in scotland then its not too unrealistic. dialect doesnt determine intellect. anyway, like i sed, its important they made the effort..

the hercules example before was a good one, cos yknow i didnt know new zealanders and americans were in ancient greece.lol. and as much as i liked the show and could appreciate that itd b.. unattractive to make them all speak in greek accents, us comic book readers prefer an effort at some historical and regional realism

oit. i've sed it a million times now, powers rules. and his speech patterns rule for his own characters, tho i havta admit he makes everyone sound the same.

the thing is lots of writers characters sound the same, but because its nothing distinctive noone picks up on it. bendis has such convos as above and so people notice when they show up... alot.

That would be hilarious. 'Magneto's gon doon toon like.'

yes! thatd be brilliant! x-men vs a LITERAL toon army!

"oh no! they've got soccer balls!"

"watch out! itsa spalding!"

It could have Magneto tearing apart a pub then a Geordie mutant saying 'Rite thas it, all ah wanted was a broon ale nou, yerve spilt it.' Then a fight mabye with some geordie mutant football hooligans backing up the guy in the pub.
