Infinity War "I Will Bathe The Starways In Your Blood!" The Thanos / Josh Brolin Thread - Part 1

It could be a lot worse.

Oscar Isaac was lost underneath all that Apocalypse make up and Stephen Wolf... good Lord was that atrocious.

Exactly. A lot of the complaints I've seen seem like people complaining just for the sake of it. I see nothing wrong with Thanos and the alterations they've made. It's not as if his design is the polar opposite of the comics, they've just made some (necessary) tweaks & I think he looks all the better for it. I had no qualms with his appearance in either GOTG or AoU but I definitely prefer what we have now. No question.

I just think people like things to be as similar to the comic books as possible which I can understand, but everybody should know by now that the MCU is entirely it's own thing. Sure they take some inspirations from certain comics, but its lot more grounded and they at least try to make it more realistic by ignoring the sillier elements.

Fans might not like that which is why their are so many complaints about him not having the armor or the helmet, but the Russo's are doing what they feel is best for their own movie and that's making Josh Brolin look as humanly realistic as Thanos as possible.

His appearance is trivial. Characterization, however, is HUGE here, and a valid concern that isnt to be written off. I saw something similar posted in another forum, and want to pass this one and please,

I would LOVE to hear everyone's thoughts here.

So, as we can tell, Marvel Now comics and the films seems to have just a bit in common. There is no denying Thanos' popularity has increased since coming into the MCU. However, this is where some Thanos fans get a bit concerned.

As Thanos' presence has increased in the comics, it appears marvel has disregarded a solid 15 years of legitimate character development. What we seemingly have now is egotistical overlord tyrannical conqueor Thanos, who tells his allies they can "rot in hell for all I care", and they are "nothing to me". Out of character? Well, if we take the character's development up until 2012, yes, this is TOTALLY out of character.

Because Thanos isn't, and never was an evil tyrannical egotistical overlord. He WAS however totally nihillistic and psychopathic. However, what he truly was at his core, was a scientist, an explorer, and a philosopher.

With this said, through out the 90s, and up until his ressurrection in the Thanos imperative, we got a steady character development of self discovery, as he transitioned from angry, lonely and depressed villain antangonist to a student of the universe who became a situational antihero. Inherently evil? Never. He died, and was reborn, ANGRY. Then, Marvel's pop culture movement happened, and Thanos' history was wiped clean in order for this tyrannical monster Thanos to increase in interpretation.

And you know what? Jim Starlin's last story acknowledges this. The "real" Thanos and Adam Warlock exist outside of the general Marvel canon, as observers of different timelines and versions of themselves. I believe this is Jim Starlin's way of saying, regardless of what comics and film do, I am the one who writes this character, and I am making sure the REAL Thanos still exists. We know Starlin was on set for IW. As far as I am concerned, Starlin's Thanos is the only true Thanos. In my opinion, I think modern Thanos sucks.

So with this said.. which Thanos do you guys think we get on screen?

This modern tyrannical Thanos, or the classic scientific curious lonely Thanos?

Maybe a bit of both? Joe Russo did state recently that collecting the Infinity Stones would be a spiritual journey for him and Thanos' approach in this film would be philosophical.

I really like what they did with Thanos. Usually with a pure CGI character you almost always get the dead eye treatment, but Thanos looks so alive. i'm guessing the character has a more toned down humanized treatment because it makes it easier to create lifelike traits.

Is Thanos pure CGI? Why wouldn't they do mo-cap like they did with Ruffalo and the Hulk? That would seem to be the best course of action to get a more realistic look which still uses Brolin's facial performance and eyes.

It was motion capture.

That's what I would've thought, but others were saying pure CGI. I don't see any reason why they would go back to a more primitive method like that when they've been perfecting motion capture for years.

Both Josh and Mark have been working with Terry Notary, who worked on the Apes movies.

I believe Terry is doing the mo-cap for teenage Groot and Cull Obsidian (of The Black Order) in Infinity War too.

No wonder it looks so good. The mo-cap work in the Apes films was downright revolutionary.

That shot of him putting on the two gems is freakin magic

I don't like the modern Thanos. I don't care much for the over-reliance on goons, the de-emphasis of his intelligence and cunning in favor of his power, and the increased sadism and violence. His role in Secret Wars was what really underscored how poor the modern interpretation of the character, as the old Thanos would've never wasted his time in petty destruction and murder and would've been doing what Doom was doing.

I thought he looked perfect in Guardians of the Galaxy.
I wish they would have kept more of that look; I'm sure they
have their reasons for changing it, though.

Agreed. Modern Thanos it's just so... basic.

If Stalin was on the set of IW, then I'm sure the Russo Bros. had consulted with him regarding Thanos' history and characterization, and we'll probably get a classic Mad Titan than the modern revision of him.

They've obviously taken some inspiration from the modern version with his "children".

But it does seem he is still philosophical and his quest seems to be motivated by universal balance. I'd love it if he does have an obsession with Death. But if not, I'd settle for him genuinely believing he is doing the universe a service. It'd be even more interesting if he's actually right... the universe is falling apart and he's the only one who can fix it. That's how you make a memorable villain.

And way back in the early stages of the film the Russo brothers (or was it Markus and McFeely?) tweeted out images showing they were reading Hickman's Avengers stuff for research.

Between the Black Order, the Outriders, and the fact that a big part of the movie involves Thanos' forces trying to invade Wakanda (like in Infinity), it's clear they are drawing from the modern stuff as well as the classics.

Maaan, this sounds fantastic! What's the name of the comics?

Would the ghost of Stalin really be the best sauce for writing Thanos? :o

Not that I care about powerlevels or anything, but for someone said to be the most powerful being in the Universe, that Thanos punch looked weak as f***.

While I can appreciate them not wanting to have his fist pass straight through Stark's chest, I kinda agree...
Maybe he's not even trying? Showing that even when playing around, IM doesn't have a chance whatsoever...

Maybe his power is in something else than his physique. :yay:
