Up until now I thought it was an updated version of the American Revolution, where we broke away from the tyrannical British through the efforts of some heroic individuals who risked life and limb and suffered daring exploits.
Never thought about it as being just fantasy, a made up story.
Well though it alludes to many conflicts, it's still "a made up story" and it does carry with it many of the tropes of fantasy storytelling. Even Lucas himself talks about using Joseph Campbell's book on myth as an outline.
We have war, young unfulfilled farm-boy, characters who put farm-boy in direct contact with the conflict, wise old wizard/teacher, rescuing the princess from the dark wizard's lair, joining with the freedom fighters. I could think of at least 10 fantasy stories and fairy tales that follow that same route.
