IESB: Welling out of the running for JLA Superman

^^No one said singer can't make his sequel, he just can't make it for summer '09. beyond that who knows...

Singer isn't a bad director either, although he seems to be hated by many. He went in the wrong direction with SR and to an extent, he realizes it. MOS was going to be very action oriented. But he did paint himself into a corner with the whole kid plot, I don't know how you fix that...

Rob at iesb says that the ZOD rumor is BS and that he will not be a villian in MoS.

It's weird, Welling and Routh are both big guys (6"3 I think for both) and both pretty built, but I always think Routh looks slightly lankier than Welling. Maybe his chest or shoulders aren't as broad, I think his neck and jawline are also narrower than Welling ........ its hard to pin down exactly why I get that impression.

That was my only complaint with his portrayal of Superman, I really thought he needed to work on looking slightly bigger and more intimidating, whereas it seems Welling has that natural build anyway.

Wouldn't most people be happy about that? I mean, even the people who didn't like him in SR - wouldn't they be happy he was moving on?

According to most reports, Warners wants that too.

It's funny, 'cause while I agree with the sentiment, I can't think of one topic that has ignited more passion in places like this than the casting of Superman. Even the suit arguments pale in comparison to Who. Should. Be. Superman. So the belief that it could end by casting yet *another* actor in the role makes me chuckle. Right now, it's just two actors. Can you imagine if and when it becomes THREE? Get yer helmets on kids, we're in for a WILD ride.

Hee! Well, I felt the same way about Routh. I thought he was a horrible actor and made a horrible Superman. But ooopzzz... there's that argument again. :D

In a way, I agree with you. But that's just ONE poll. There were many others that were taken before SR when the TV show had only been on the air for 2 or 3 years. The results were similar. At MSNBC, 74% of 66 thousand people voted for Welling. At CNN, 55% of 28 thousand voted the same, etc. So what you have is evidence of a great deal of support by the general public for one actor, and it's not going away! This is even *after* another actor was cast in the role in a critically acclaimed blockbuster film. If you were the suits at Warners, wouldn't you be thinking, "What's up with that?"

Now the question comes down to, should they cast the same actor again and hope he catches on after two films, should they cast a new actor and hope HE can win over the general public, or should they just cast the actor that a lot of people have been begging for since as far back as 2003?

Hmmm... decisions, decisions.

Well, there's also the argument that if the queen had balls, she'd be king, but I understand your point. ;) :p

I think a lot of people voting for Routh do so just because he was cast in the film, not because he or the film were particularly amazing. Not saying YOU are doing that, but I have seen the argument that "Routh is Superman now, so why change?" George Lazenby was "James Bond" by virtue of a casting decision. Val Kilmer and George Clooney were "Batman" by virtue of a casting decision. But how many people really see those actors AS those characters? Whether it was the actor, the movie, or the public's preconceived notions themselves, those actors didn't click in the role.

There really is no way of knowing how the public will react to a particular actor until he's cast. That said, something is afoot when one actor keeps being "fan-casted" for a particular role. Call it the Christian Bale effect. Maybe Warners is thinking, well it worked before, lets try it again? I dunno. It's a no-brainer to me, but it's not my decision. *shrugs*

Anyhoo, here's something to squee about no matter what happens...

this is routh during the actual shoot...

He would **** up tw in a lift off...:word:

honestly though.

Brandon Routh's natural proportions arent as wide as Wellings. Brandon is more in line with Christopher Reeve's build.

Fair comparison.

routhwellids6.jpg

Chris was in prime shape onscreen during filming but looked skinny during hiatus. Just the same, Brandon's build onscreen as Superman looked different from how he appeared later in public during hiatus.

It all depends on what WB wants for the sequel. They wanted Superman to appear more toned and not as bulky and Brandon was close to ripping the seams on the million dollar suits: check the meeting on the bts dvd. They may want something different for Mos.

Oh look, another size debate. Never gets old, does it? :yay:

I'm one of the few who didn't complain about Routh's size, but Welling's build is just more convincing. Wellings build is exactly what Supermans build needs to look like, that of a big strong farmboy. Welling just looks naturally big and strong. Routh looks like someone who hits the gym everyday!

That's an interesting observation and one I don't think I've heard before. Kudos for bringing something new to the table, Venom.

And now, the argument will continue. Carry on. :D

easy to say when you post pics WHILE he works out. Muscle gets pumped up during workouts. His muscles never looked that defined in the film.

Thank You :yay:

I've thought this for awhile, thats one thing that always made Welling stand out to me was the big, tough, strong farmboy look he has. Routh, and Reeve as well, both look like dudes who got on a Exercise program with a muscle gaining diet and hit the Dumbbells, Smith Machines, and Cable Crossovers for a different muscle everyday. Welling looks like he wakes up, eats some eggs and pancakes, drinks his organge juice, and then works on the farm all day. And thats what Superman's build should be like.

Let me bottom line this. If Superman was fighting Darkseid to save Earth as we know it, who would you believe in more, Welling or Routh?

Give me Welling to fight Darkseid anyday!

NOW, if they don't go with Welling or Routh, I'm going to throw my vote to two names from the past. Matthew Bomer and Henry Cavill. Bomer, who I hated when he was first mentioned, proved me wrong with his acting ability and I find it refreshing that he doesn't look like a Reeve clone but at the same time has the look. Henry Cavill has one of the best "looks" for Superman I've ever seen and truth be told could probably act circles around Routh, Welling, or Bomer. He would give Reeve a run for his money as well!

Routh wears the dumbest shirts.........

I've look long and hard at that pic and I sense the force of Superman is strong with this one. Prepare yourself shifter of shape for the day when young Welling is granted the power by the WB to bare the Symbol of "Truth, Justice and the American way!"

well we didnt see him walking around in skin tight tee shirts either ala welling. I dont see how you can say he doesnt look big enough and then say he looks like he lifts every day while Welling is naturally big. He's not.

The way your body looks in pics generally depends more on lighting, angles, ect. An actually interesting observation would be routh are low quality in motion pics. Welling is POSING in many of the pics of his muscles udner light angled and designed to make his muscles show.

granted the "size" argument is always a stupid one as superman gets his stregnth from the sun :o

Yeah, that cape is as bout as influential as the glasses that he wore in a previous episode or the flying, or the training that has supposed to have begun like three times now or the whole interest in journalism and getting an education that they've glossed over in advancement of the Love of Lana.:whatever:

This is true. Reeve was the same way. He had to hit the gym hard.

But as long as the result is good, it doesnt matter, I can't fault the actors for how they look in their own time.

Bale has it the worst. He hits the gym hard sometimes but loses muscle mass so easily. Though he's lucky he gets armor in TDK. Hes keeping his leaner natural build for the film.

Build can always be worked on. Getting the right height, look, voice, acting skill for Superman and Clark Kent is the tough part.

Oh look, another size debate. Never gets old, does it? :yay:
you know that i thnk that TW has a better body structure then routh. so pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease dont even start posting the 20 set pics of welling without hes t-shirt.

thanks :woot:

i like that kind of manips. i like also where brandon is owning tom. i like boths. but i dont get why some SR fans hate that kind of manips and also why SV hate when brandon is owning tom. why dont we just laugh?

i never noticed how cloned that scene from SR was from smallville. He even has the hideous jacket going!
