I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Premature prediction: Christopher Dent will be the Falcone-type overarching antagonist of Part II; I wouldn't immediately want it but I'd admire the hell out of it.

I really think there's an important piece missing, and it's probably the "main villain" of the plot, the guy we'll see in the marketing and trailers.

Probably some version of a "Character", later revealed in the movie to be Gilda (Phantasm, Ivy, a genderswapped version of someone else like Hush).

Regarding the old Clayface rumors, I think that’s a case of crossed wires tbh. But since we keep theorizing character amalgamations, Golden Age Clayface looks like Holiday in silhouette.

If this is a Dent family drama plus mystery Hush/Holiday/Phantasm, give that villain a trenchcoat, top hat, and cool face covering—Phantasm mask, Hush bandages, whatever. Something so we don’t know who it is

Pepper in Joker for good measure and you’ve in for a good sequel

If ScarJo really is playing Gilda, I hope they don't make it a plot twist that she's the villain.

Batman: Arkham Knight game did the same thing, and since the first trailer, everyone knew it was Jason Todd. That was so lame from Rocksteady

Reeves played the reveal that Falcone is Selina’s father as some big reveal in Part I so who knows what these films consider “big” twists/reveals.

I could be completely wrong of course, but I'm frankly not sure if I buy such radical departures from the comics that people are proposing with an A-list villain like Two-Face after how faithful Penguin, Catwoman and just to a lesser degree Riddler were.

If it was a villain like Mad Hatter, Professor Pyg or Black Mask, sure.

But Two-Face?

Eh.

It also seems to me that the main motivation for these radical departures is to differentiate it from The Dark Knight rather than it actually being a good story.

I could see it for sure and would have no issue with it but tbh I think it’s more likely Harvey does become Two-Face AND there’s a big twist with Gilda.

I don't think Gilda being villainous even needs to be a twist. Harvey can still be Two-Face and Gilda can be a big factor in that happening without a "twist" being in the equation. I'd personally prefer that, as we all already know Scarlett ain't signing up to just be Harvey's love interest. You also don't need to do anything else to differentiate it from TDK. Harvey's family being major players and focusing on his inner life would already be a gigantic departure from TDK's portrayal. Just make their dynamic compelling to watch throughout and that's all you need.

I wonder what the odds are that Gilda will be combined with another character like Phantasm or something? Holiday isn't really a marketable character and its not clear that Dent would transform into Two-Face in this film.

Gilda/Andrea composite with Bruce having a history with Gilda and Gilda being a loose adaptation of Phantasm could be something.

Reeves' comment of..."Never...really been done in a movie before" was interesting. Kind of implies that it's a matter of interpretation (IE not done in live action perhaps?). I will also say. If there's another masked killer, the look of Phantasm is already pretty in line with Riddler's aesthetic in this universe.

This video def makes some good cases for why Phantasm could line up with a lot of the ideas that we know are circling this movie. Fun speculation even if it's totally off track.

It's possible, but that's literally the same twist of Long Halloween, considering how secretive Reeves is being with this film. I'd be a little surprised if the big mystery is simply a variation on the plot of one of the most popular Batman comics of all time.

I coincidentally have that video in my Watch Later on YouTube so I'll definitely check it out!

The video’s essentially pitching an Andrea/Gilda amalgamation, MOTP & TLH. I’m so game for that.

If the movie went in that direction, while also digging into the "epic history of corruption" angle (CoO, sorry not sorry :eheh:) which could dovetail with Arkham Asylum/Martha's backstory, we could really be cooking. If you can manage introducing Dick Grayson within all of that too?

Look...this is likely gonna be another 3 hour movie. We have 85+ years of lore to draw from. I'm ready for something sprawling and JUICY.

Just reread Dark Victory; I’d love to see Reeves bring Robin into the fold.

Lot of great character moments with Bruce and Dick; and really love the side-by-side with Alfred consoling young Bruce vs. young Dick, and assuring Dick that he’s not alone (something he regrets not having said to Bruce at the time). Give Andy Serkis something to do

The really interesting wrinkle here for me is the inclusion of Christopher Dent. Reeves doesn't use flashbacks much (I don't think The Batman had any?), so I assume he's going to be alive and well during the events of the movie.

My incredibly premature prediction is that the movie will frame Christopher Dent as the villain, only to reveal that it was Harvey and/or Gilda all along.
