I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Fair; I don’t think it’s a bad idea but it can be done badly—and we saw that it Spectre.

And I don’t think Hush and Hugo Strange are mutually exclusive; at least not how I envision it—

Tommy Elliot seeks revenge on Bruce Wayne, & frames him. Bruce finds himself in Arkham where he’s face-to-face with Hugo Strange and the criminally insane (Joker, Riddler, Hangman, Professor Pyg, Firefly, etc).

While Gordon tries to maintain order, Bruce struggles inside Arkham lock-up. He must escape to prove his innocence and maintain his sanity, ultimately learning the secret to Tommy’s dark obsession with the Waynes (either classic Hush origin, or borrow elements from Lincoln March, or go half-brother).

Yes. It was in "Heart of Hush", if I'm not mistaken...

That would already make the character a little more interesting.
And since Bruce would naturally want to reclaim his civilian identity now that he has “tamed” his alter ego, and since he will certainly want to restore his family's reputation after the Riddler's revelations, a storyline revolving around someone trying to steal his legacy would makes sense.

This could also explain why the name Clayface has been circulating at one point : perhaps even before defining the antagonist, Reeves already knew he wanted to explore the idea of a double.
Considering the director chose his words carefully, the fact that Pattinson would be playing a dual role would fit quite well with what I understood from his quote “never really done before”, which struck me as more about a new concept than just a new character.

If they do facial reconstruction, I could see the filmmakers use a little of the AI trickery they used in Furiosa to blend the actresses’ likenesses.

Hush being such a blank slate opens up of doors for many ideas. Even doors we may not like.

For example: if someone said out loud that The Riddler would be partially inspired by Michael Myers, there would have been tons of negative comments.

I just think that every idea, no matter how bizarre, should be on the table. That is how you end up with something different.

Saw this. Liked it. Hope for it.

Well good thing he wasn’t inspired by Michael Myers then because that would have been lame.

We all know Batman's mentally ill.

I remember reading that the main inspiration behind Reeves and Paul Dano's take on The Riddler is the Zodiac Killer.

In a recent conversation with MovieMaker, Matt Reeves revealed the inspiration behind The Riddler in The Batman. He says that he wanted to base the character on the infamous Zodiac Killer, a real-life 1970s serial killer shrouded in mystery, who teased the detectives trying to uncover his identity and stop him. Reeves added that the idea for the movie was to portray the Riddler villain in that same image, and to indicate that his targets reveal that there is more of a conspiracy at play. Read Reeves' quote below:

"The premise of the movie is that the Riddler is kind of molded in an almost Zodiac Killer sort of mode, and is killing very prominent figures in Gotham, and they are the pillars of society. These are supposedly legitimate figures. It begins with the mayor, and then it escalates from there. And in the wake of the murders, he reveals the ways in which these people were not everything they said they were, and you start to realize there’s some kind of association. And so just like Woodward and Bernstein, you’ve got Gordon and Batman trying to follow the clues to try and make sense of this thing in a classic kind-of-detective story way."

Do you have a source on that? I genuinely don’t see it beyond the most broad slasher movie imagery.

If you’re looking for a “source”, good luck with that. I’ve only ever seen a few people pick up on it as I did. Though, that doesn’t make what I say less true.

First, let’s take the opening scene. Just like the opening scene in Halloween 78, both Michael and Riddler stalks their victim from a first person pov. Also, there is the fact that he decided to attack on Halloween night. Riddler’s heavy breathing is also very reminiscent of Michael.

Next we have the scene where Riddler appears from the shadows and attacks Mayor Mitchel which is similar to Michael’s attack on Laurie.

Further into the film, you have Riddler’s attack on Colson which is also inspired by Michael’s attack on Annie.

Like I said, he’s partially inspired by Michael Myers. Much like he’s partially inspired by the Zodiac Killer. I haven’t noticed anything else nor do I know if this is where the inspiration ends. Though, I would personally like if they continued.

I'm excited to see how they will incorporate winter/Christmas on the movie's aesthetics too, assuming that it's immediately set after The Penguin.

Always love me a snowy Gotham!

What kind of mistery do you think it will be?
Maybe a whodunit like in TLH?

Or a kidnapper like Silence of the lambs?

I think it could be heavily inspired to All president's man, like a conspirational mistery, but the villain has to be visually interesting and epic, like some of you said.

Any way we know that Matt likes to take references, what movies do you think he could look at?

As for the family stuff, why invent a brother like in Joker when this Bruce is a descendant to Arkham family?
Jeremiah Arkham could be very interesting, maybe mixed with Strange...
