Did the marine happen to mention you get treated like **** for like the first 5 years? Even then it dont get much better unless your an officer or 20 year man. Im sure he mentioned 30 days vacation a year youll never get to use too. Ask him about basic training and what its REALLY like. Im sure hell tell you he dont remember very well alot of Sgts and recruiters seem to "forget" it. Im not saying its bad just make sure you dont take everything he says face value and know what your getting into.

I was in the Army for 8 yrs. Just got out in March. If you are in college, I'd suggest you stay there. If you really want to join you should see if your school has an ROTC program. Being an officer is 10X better than being enlisted.

I finally talked to my dad about me joining the military and he wasn't having any of it. So now I'm going to have to call the recruiter to cancel our little meeting.

The obvious reason is pay. The not so obvious reasons are you wont get crapped on AS much as enlisted people. Straight out of college LT. are called Sir by 20 year enlisted people while straight out of techschool/AIT/insert branch school here get called......well lets just say is isnt sir. Another good reason is you get better civilian jobs when you get out 1) because you have a degree 2) because officers are managers -CEO positions while enlisted are labor. Yes Sgts manage but the difference is like shift supervisor to store manager.

The military is set up as a Master/ Slave system. It might sound like a harsh statement but it's the best analogy. No matter how long you stay in as an enlisted you will always be a slave. I came up the ranks pretty quickly because I had a couple of years of college under my belt before I enlisted. It took me 4 1/2 years to be a Staff Sergeant. I'm not trying to brag, but I will always be proud of that. Nonetheless if I had stayed in college and earned a commission in those 4 1/2 years I could have been a 1st Lieutenant making alot more money. A lot more. If you want to make a career I would suggest to anyone to be a commissioned officer.

As far as Airborne. If that floats your boat, go for it. My brother-in-law is an Army Recruiter right outside of Fayetteville, NC home of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was in Field Artillery in an Airborne unit before becoming a recruiter and he warned me not to do anything combat arms related because he hated it. So I joined and went into the Signal Corps doing radio communications.

Much like this thread. Alot of broken and misinformed opinions by a bunch of other civilians who thinks that convincing people that they're going to die if they go into the military is 'the right thing to do'. You know what the right thing to do is? Let the people who want to go and fight, fight. We didn't make this country on the backs of a bunch of lazy, death-fearing dumbasses who sit on their computers all day and talk about how horrible the military is.

Let the kid go ****ing represent his country with valour if he wants to. Don't take that right away from him by 'explaining that he's going to die' (hyperbole) or that the military is 'an evil beast that will take control of who you are as a person' (also, hyperbole). I've met and personally had several P.E. classes with recruits.. and they haven't been turned into mindless killing zombies yet. Nor does enlisting ensure your death. If it did, then damn.. we must be screwed because the majority of our armed forces are in Iraq. Better start ordering those few hundred thousand body bags in advance..

People can respect their country,and serve.But let it be for something,i can imagine it going down as the second Vietnam for you Americans.Wars are not ment to be pretty,of course everyone knows that.I dont belive the American public is being told the truth,i can imagine there are soliders there who at first.Signed up,and later learned it was a lot more than what they asked for.

I certainly agree that C-$ should be selective as to whose advice he should take, but as Hippie Hunter pointed out there are users here who, while not in the military, come from military families and whose opinions are just as valid. not to mention though C-$'s family may not have any military experience their opinions are also just as valid given they know him on a personal level and would probably have a better insight than anyone here as to what may be best for him.

really it's just the attitude that those in the military are somehow superior to those who aren't that I take issue with.

This morning while I was sitting at the bus stop waiting for the city bus to pick me up, an marine sergant walks up to me and starts asking me all sorts of questions. He told me that I would be a good fit to be in the military becuase I looked pretty fit and looked like I was in good shape. To make this long story short I gave him my phome number, he gave his card, and he's going to come to my house monday morning to pick me up and take me to his office to talk. These two guys at my college were telling me about the positives and negatives about the marines like " chicks dig the uniform" and "my college tuition will be payed for". I have told my mom about this about I haven't told my dad becuase I'm terrified to death! I have no ideal how he's going to react.

How will you be going to college if your dead? Oh btw I've heard a lot of stories about the "military" promising enlisting bonuses and paid-college tution from other ppl...lets just say they have yet to live up to the promise.

You got approached by the ever so lovely recruiter. No offense or anything to you but he was going to say ANYTHING to you to make you seem interested in the military, dude.

You realize that if you do sign up he gets a nice little bonus in cash, right? Just keep remembering that each and every time he's handing you his line of BS. I've been through plenty of army recruiters when I was 18 and it's all the same. They make it seem like doing anything BESIDES going to the military is a waste of time.

I think you should talk to your dad about it, definitely. Because if he was anything like my dad he'll go beat the crap out of that recruiter for trying to recruit his son into a war that is going no where.

Sounds to me that if he didn't consult with his father than he'd have blindly walked into that office, signed up for the military, and probably would have been shipped out to Iraq after basic training. So, I think it was a good thing that he doesn't have full control.

Actualy, America very well may have. Let's not forget that the United States of America didn't fight in WWII to do what was "right", but rather to do what was "right for them". I can't say that I blame them, but let's not pretend as if they entered the second great war to take out the big meanie Adolf Hitler because they didn't like what he was doing to the Jews. They didn't give a ****. America joined the war only after it was attacked, so let's try to see things for what they are.
