IMDb to close "message boards" on February 20, 2017

I repeat -what you are doing here is worse than juvenile trolling.
How so? Pointing out the reality of the IMDB boards is trolling? Pointing out that opinions, far more well written and thought out opinions, can be found else where is trolling? Pointing out he lack of actual discussion on obscure films is trolling?

You are on a forum for films. If you are looking for discussion, start a thread. Go to Reddit, start something. You are entitled to miss them if you want. That doesn't mean anyone else is.

I posted on one of subsections on imdb for years. Met a lot of great people there, talented reviewers, even film makers. We already started a new place for ourselves after we were forced to leave imdb because of the shutddown.

You weren't even part of imdb and you make awful, hurtful generalizations about a whole bunch of people. You give this place a bad name, you and others who do this. It's not trolling what you are doing. It's worse.

Then what are you mourning? You now have a new place to continue that same discussion.

And actually yes, I use to post on IMDB. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, but I did. Lived it first hand. Which is exactly why I don't mourn the loss of the rather horrid forums.

Also, it isn't a generalization. The majority of IMDB was that. Even if you contain it to the popular actors, shows and flicks, they had the vast majority of the post. So how is it a generalization and not the actual general state of the boards?

You just seem upset people are calling the IMDB boards what they were. A den for trolls.

There is a group trying to start a separate platform.

They currently have a website: http://www.moviepanels.com/

If you're interested they're allowing people to sign up now and secure their SN. If you don't feel comfortable giving them your email address I'd just bookmark the website and wait to see what comes out of it.

See, you will be able to still find those you enjoyed having discussion with, in other places. All without the outdated forum and trolls aplenty.

Hi Everyone. I was very disappointed when IMDB forum is closing.

But some imdb users informed me that there is a new forum..." the movie data base".

I have checked it out and I think it's great.

I will sign up as a member at " the movie data base" and post in their forum to discuss my love and passion for movies.

Hope to see you guys there too.

It's a damn shame that it's gone. Despite the many trolls i find and found imdb.com and it's message boards to be an incredibly resourceful place. There were lots of insightful posts and debates on a variety of different series, movies, actors etc. Not everything can be found on google so i will miss it for sure.:(

I'm definitely on your side that IMDb was atrocious, but I'm also of the position that the internet should always be open and give people the opportunity to reside wherever they see fit without unnecessary management. In that sense I can sympathize with the users who did have genuine fulfillment in whatever niche areas they participated in.

With that said, the owners also have a right of doing what they wish with a creation that is their very own, so c'est la vie. No skin off my back.

I'll miss the fact that I could find discussion on any movie or TV show or actor that had a page. Even if the discussions were years old, or not very active, it was always interesting to see what people were saying, especially about movies or TV shows that I thought nobody else watched.

I certainly won't miss the trolls who had to ruin it for everybody else.

Why couldn't they just hire more people to moderate the boards? That was literally all they needed to do.

Anyways, as foul and negative those boards could be, I've met a lot of great people on there (who've I become friends with in real life) and I'll miss all the essay long theories and explainations about some of the films I love :waa:

I wonder what will take its place, if anything.

Though I have noticed a slightly larger influx of new users in the past few days here.

It's almost depressing to look at IMDb now. It was an easy place to find the answers to questions about specific films since each movie had their own board.

*sigh*

Imdb users, please dont come here. Sincere, movie fan.

Like previously said, if you really need to discuss an old, obscure movie, just start a new thread in this or any other forum that you use. It's not that hard.

The trolls won't come here. This is a moderated board. They wouldn't last five minutes.

I think the problem is finding the audience for that. I love indie movies, but I'm on a super hero forum. Are there indie fans here? Or would my thread just get bumped to the next page in favor of the things we like to hype about?

It's okay to be annoyed that IMDb's boards are gone, but I don't get the need to be PA to those who used them correctly and for a long time. *shrugs*

IMDB users are going in on IMDB via Twitter and Facebook.

The Guardian also wrote an article about why IMDB should rethink things.

I think it's too late. They really made a mistake. Now the users are scattered everywhere - a group of us started a board and we already have 300+ in the matter of days. There are also people who set up replicas of imdb and those got a lot of members, some went to already created boards. It's like someone threw a grenade and members who knew each other for years needed to find an existing place of create one and people already did that.

But the fact that it is all so scattered is so annoying. I saw Big Little Lies last night and immediately after I wanted to check a board devoted to it and read people's reactions to it like I did for years after watching something and it was no longer an option because the biggest movie database in the world did this s--t.

Posted on IMDb for years, before abandoning it a few years back. Can't say I'll miss it.

That's the biggest thing. You can always start a thread about a movie, show, etc, but having a board specific to it where you can ask multiple questions was helpful.

I admit that the trolling was out of hand, but simply getting people to moderate it would've helped. I just think the excuse that people use social media to talk about films is BS. I love film twitter but with a 140 characters, it's not the easiest place to discuss it and forget facebook and all their personal data they take from you.

Somebody on Facebook claimed Amazon told IMDb to take down the boards. Hadn't heard that...
