Marvel's newest superhero is undergoing round-the-clock training for the role of billionaire warrior-monk Iron Fist, a.k.a. Daniel Rand. Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones' daily routine consists of hours of martial-arts practice ("kung fu and wushu mixed with a bit of tai chi") followed by lifting weights ("to bulk me up") and meditation and Buddhist philosophy studies.

"I've always dreamed of a role that bridged spiritual discipline and bada** superhero," Jones says. "There's a contradiction in those elements that's going to be very fun to play."

Exceptional instruction is arguably needed to portray Rand, whose origin story is all intense training rather than super-suits or scientific breakthroughs: After his family meets a tragic fate while on expedition in China, a young Rand is adopted by the people of the mystical lost city of K'un-Lun, where he's taught a magical fighting style. Years later, he returns to New York to fight crime.

The Netflix series will also stage a Thrones reunion of sorts, casting Jessica Henwick--who plays Sand Snake Nymeria--as samurai Colleen Wing. But while his new gig is all about projecting power, the latest chapter for Jones' Thrones character is the opposite. After being imprisoned last year, expect Ser Loras Tyrell to be at his lowest point in season 6, which returns April 24.

I liked this part the best. I hope he captures the contradictory elements that make Danny who we all love in the comics. Particularily the fact that he trained very intensely and suffered tragedy at a young age, yet is someone who is laidback and fun personality-wise.

I know it's me overthinking it but that description of the origin makes me think that not only will they not do a dragon, they won't even have something else for him to face to make him stand out.
His powers will come from the "magical fighting style" he was taught, and that's it... I hope I'm wrong and that's not the case.

But Danny Rand is a completely different character, and the world that he comes from, how he obtained his powers and his skills — all completely different. I think fans will be pleased.

That article was written by someone who probably just googled Iron Fist as they were writing it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Honestly it will probably help that Iron Fist won't premiere until after the release of Doctor Strange, which will introduce more magical concepts into the MCU. And Daredevil has already started delving into the mystical stuff with the Hand.

I think the only potential issue with the dragon would come down to budgetary reasons.

some nice stuff from finn on what he is doing to get ready for the show.

As for dragon stuff with all that can be done on tv today i doubt it really be that big of a issue or that big of a drop in the series budget. We likely only see dragon thing once and it likely be a 2 to 3 min max scene and they could easily also stage things like in shadows and what not and we only see a few bits and peices of dragon to limit costs more.

No matter what they say about how Iron Fist will be different, it's hard to foresee them incorporating Shao Lao being a dragon in the first season.

I think a lot of the Shao Lao K'un L'un stuff will be offscreen.

Nah, the way they've been approaching it for Daredevil and Jessica Jones is through flashbacks, and they've already mentioned they'll be using that technique in Luke Cage. Most likely we'll have flashbacks to K'un-L'un but the majority of Danny's adventures will be street-oriented.

How is Jones going to become flexible if he hasn't been stretching for years? He needs to be able to do high kicks. None of these low kicks or ones filmed at low angles like was always the case with David Carradine in Kung Fu.

Funny because Arleo Dordar and his family were known in Canada for overcharging and scamming students in their martial arts gyms, then getting sued for it. I guess Steel Serpent fits him LOL.
