Is Face/Off really the best action movie ever?

Face/Off doesn't even make the top twenty.

The over-melodramatic music, overacting, and over-stylized cinematography are headache inducing.

I mildly enjoyed it the first time I saw then watched it again recently and it was painful to watch.

Yes, yes, yes.

Die Hard With A Vengeance...and maybe The Rock...are the top action movies ever made. No sci-fi movies allowed...sorry Matrix...but before, bullet time, before every movie incorporated wire-work...we had these. Personally, I think Broken Arrow is much better than Face/Off.

I've seen a lot of respectible reviewers (including Empire magazine) name Face/Off as one of, if not the, best action movie ever. I've never rated it very highly - indeed, it was sanwiched between The Rock and Con Air, both of which I prefer.

No way. Not even top 10.

i wouldn't consider Empire a very reliable source considering they did this...

The top 10 worst special effects according to Empire May issue:
10. King Kong (1976)
9. The Mummy Returns
8. Slugs
7. Escape from L.A.
6. The Lost World (1960)
5. Predator
4. The Abyss
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street
2. Alien Resurrection
1. Plan 9 From Outer Space

imo, Spider-Man 2 holds the crown right now but it'll probably be toppled by Transformers...

Uh...

My Top 10 action movies

Aliens
Gladiator
Diehard
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Untouchables
Lethal Weapon
T2
Braveheart
The Professional
Hardboiled
11. Heat

I don't understand the love for Die Hard, it's so basic and really doesn't bring anything new or exciting to the filmic world. And T2 is nothing on T1

Die Hard is basic .... and thats why its so damn good! ..... It does exactly what it says on the tin. Many films have tried to copy its format in the years since but nothing has come close.

The T1/T2 debate will never end .... T1 is a sci-fi classic ... a legend, but to me T2 is the ultimate summer event movie.

Die hard exceedingly dull for me, with a lead character with whom I felt no essence or style, with a terrible actor behind him. no thanks.

Yeah, it does. John McClane, one of the first and best action heroes in film ever.

As much as I love T1, T2 > T1.

That's the point. McClane's just a regular joe who finds himself in perilous situations and fights his way out of it. He doesn't have an essence or style.

Die Hard is really the best action movie ever.

Die Hard
Aliens
Terminator 2
Gladiator
Heat
The Professional
Predator

Doesn't bring anything new to the table? This film is the one that most other action movies copy.

It's good, nowhere near the best action film ever.

I'd give that distinction to...

Out of the older action films, I'd go with the Rambos, Predators, Terminators, and quite a few others over Face Off.

Face/Off is the greatest Cage and Travolta action movie ever, in fact after seeing the film and then hearing about Cage's involvement with a Superman movie I was excited.

Here's some trivia the climax boat chase scene was originally intended for the Jean Claude Van Damme stinker Hard Target also directed by John Woo, by I think Van Damme requested it taken out because he's a pansy.

No is the answer.

As for what is, that depends on you definition of action. Do Sci-Fi movies count? If so, what ones.

It is a hard question to answer, but as far as pure shoot em up movies go, off the top of my head, Die Hard was better than Face/Off.

Why is there only 3-4 people in this thread that actually really like Face/Off. Everyone seems to just brush it off.

:csad:

Yet he chose to have the chase on horseback.....:o

Face/Off to me is a GREAT action flick. But not THE best, it does rank high to me, along with a few others of Woos' films...mainly past ones.:ninja:
