First off during the whole Sosa/McGuire home run showdown. Steroids weren't being openly discussed. It was only after that, Giambi and Canseco that the spotlight is now on Bonds.
And McGwire retired about 5 years ago.
Sosa has dropped off the planet since leaving Chicago. Hell, he's still listed as a free-agent since his agent won't put him on the retirement list, even though he's not going to play anywhere.
Giambi has apologized for his actions, so I'm guessing all is forgiven.
With Canseco, well he's a retired player. However, his book essentially started the tougher look at steroids by baseball, although having their ass handed to them by Congress helped out as well.
With Bonds, there is some convincing evidence that supports the allegations of his taking steroids, although his grand jury testimony was leaked.
I forget the name of the sportswriter, but he was on ESPN's show "Outside the Lines" this past Sunday, which raised this very topic. He essentially said that Barry has never been a "disenfranchised black man". And he's right. His father was an All-Star ballplayer, his godfather is Willie Mays, and he can claim Reggie Jackson as a cousin.
And his birthtown of Riverside, California and the town where he lived and went went to school while pops played for the Giants was San Mateo, California. Neither of which are ghettos by any means.
