It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's the Superman Costume Thread! - Part 2

So, does anyone else think that Superman will have a suit of armor in this movie? I remember seeing a toy mock-up where Superman had armor covering one of his arms.

I'm pretty sure that's just something they're doing for the toys. There was also a mock up with the main suit in red, but I know that won't happen in the movie.

I could see Superman having red armor over his blue suit, that could be why the toy has a red base. What I think will happen is that the more silver-ish parts of the suit will grow into a full suit of armor.

I think Superman may get armour, which would really disappoint me.

BUT, as someone here said... The SR toys had a version of Lex Luthor in a Kryptonite/Crystalline variant of his comics armour. Obviously, that didn't appear in the movie.

As much as I like the MOS suit, the classic suit will always be the definitve look of Superman.

^^^And the Jose Luis Garcia Lopez and Dick Giordano mid-80's illustrations of the DC characters definitive in their own right.

Thanks for posting that image. I love it.

I don't know, I think it may be a possibility.

Slim to none. No matter what superhero movies do, Mattel/Hasbro/whoever is going to make a line that consists of multiple variations of the hero in various suits and armors and accessories for various situations he or she NEVER encounters in the movie. This is why I always thought it was silly that the Schumacher Batman movies, as bad as they were, were called 2 hour toy commercials. Most of the figures released by Kenner had no basis in anything that happened in those movies. They could have been directed by the most intellectual, anti-commercialist, fun-hating, artsy director with a shelf full of Oscars and Palme d'Ors which would consist of 2 hours worth of Bruce sitting in his study with his chin to his fist having an internal monologue and there would STILL be a freaking Arctic Blast Batman figure.

^ Same. Superman isn't a character who 'upgrades' his suit.

For sure, and I don't have anything to go off of really, just a feeling. Someone did a manip of Henry with the toy armor, however, and WB pressured him to remove it.

I agree 100% infact I've voiced this to friends long ago. I was wondering if anyone else was thinking the same after spiderman's new suit debuted.

I was. I liked the new spiderman suit a lot. They made the new suit almost exactly the same as the old one with Toby. They even used the same damn fabric detail and blue! UGH!

I wouldn't mind a change, as long as there is an explanation. For instance, he changes his suit to appear less alien and more earthly.

no....that would be stupid for Superman to say, "You know what I need to do Lois? I need to make my suit look less alien like and more earth like....I think I'll add some bright red trunks to my suit! Yeah...that'll look awesome!!!!" Lois: shakes her head

I had this thought as well. let's just say for discussions sake this ends up being a trilogy. in this 1st one, it's an alien suit apparently left to him by Jor-El,so it looks how it looks. by the second movie he's changed it a bit.perhaps removing the forearm guards and the belt/leg armor stuff to appear a little less "alien". then in the 3rd film he's changed to a more "friendly" looking version similar to the comics - brighter colors, and a non-textured suit.shows a metamorphosis from Kal-El, Kryptonian to Superman, Champion of Earth.

this being said,I DON'T hate what we've got now. it took a little while, but the suit grew on me. I would be fine if this is the only suit he wears. but it wouldn't surprise me if the filmmakers are "coaxed" into changing the suit up for any future sequels for a merchandising standpoint,if nothing else.

The costume has changed with every decade right from the start and will continue to do so.

Not so. Other than dialing in the "S" in the first few years, the costume remained the same from about 1950 to 2005.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you there wrlord

So many people have talked about the subtle changes over the years,I'm not even going to argue with you. Just check the suit comparison charts. The Superman Homepage has some really good one's,and S shield comparisons.

No thanks...and the filmmakers don't need to be "coaxed" into changing the suit for a merchandising standpoint. Have you not seen the multitude of silly costumes the Batman toys have had over the years with a movie title slapped on the package? They don't need to change the suit and they shouldn't. I think with the way they are going about the suit's origin in this movie that if Superman changed his suit to be more earthly then that would be a slap in the face to his heritage. Nope...don't wanna see it

despite the small changes, it didn't change.
in the major storyline, you still had:

blue body suit
the shield
a red cape
red boots
a neckline for the cape
yellow belt
red trunks

those basics were kept the same for almost a century, until DC Comics changed it.
i respect what Znyder is doing, but the traditional suit would of worked better

I disagree. While the trunks worked in the comics and the Reeve films, no manip I've see has made me think that the trunks would work for this incarnation of the character, the closest thing is one where the little silver bits that lead round to the waist of the costume taper off into a red belt type of this, with the gold 'buckle' on the costume.

if it didn't "work", then why did it stay the same for almost a century?

Well that's your opinion about the suit design Super Kal, which is fair enough, I think we all know how you feel about it by now anyway. I personally don't think in this version of Superman that it would work,as Snyder has already half explained.

This constant complaining about the suits especially at this point is quite strange. I know it's your valid opinion about what you don't like seeing and that you want a different design of costume in the comics and film, but you are on repeat with the costume complaints.

The only thing that stands out for most people with the MOS suit is the lack of trunks,he is still completely recognisable as Superman to everyone on the planet.

This discussion is pointless. Some people like it. Some people don't. let's just leave it at that. It's like a repeating loop going round and round and pointless and round...

i can say the same about the constant praise from people who like the suit, and their whining about people who dont agree with them...

just because you think the conversation is pointless doesn't mean you get to dictate what can or cannot be talked about in this thread. if someone says the classic costume doesn't work, thats their opinion, but that doesnmt mean i, or any other person who has the same opinion as i do, dont have the right to comment...

if you think the conversation is pointless and not worth it, then dont post in the thread. that simple.
