could be, i dont know but i think the main thing for the s to be big and make it look good is the neck opening should be wide but high, im trying with this pic, but obviously without pain it isn't possible but the s looks big, the neck opening is smaller and higher but it doesnt have to make the actor look smaller

the neckline is supposed to be higher and the "S" is supposed to sit much higher up on the chest

i dont know if anyone gets the idea, i just cant do it without paint

we wouldn't know what that looks like on the screen or even on a person because there isn't one manip with that big "S"... and the "S" only seems to cover the chest, its just wide, not that long

True but check out some of the fan made costumes. Some of them went with the big "S".

A big shield for me comes of like a joke Not something I'd take seriously in a film with oscar nominated/winning actors. Not with the rich blues and reds. Maybe for a Raimi styled Supes movie. :/

I don't see anything that's not weird about that suit.

like i have been trying to explain in all the posts above, if the neckline where higher and the "S" sitting higher up on the shirt, closer to the neckline like i tried to do without photoshop in the pics i posted, it would work

Keep in mind that even the Lois and Clark crew changed that design so the Cape is underneath the collar. But honestly I agree.......were they supposed to add something to the suit or are we still under the impression that Supermans outfit is something can can wear everyday and not get noticed?

I believe I've said this before but I often wonder if the "suit-under-clothes/shirt-rip" thing is really all that necessary. Of course, it's iconic but the dude's got super-speed. He can change in a snap so does he really need to wear it underneath? I mean it's not like he's ripping open his shirt in the middle of the newsroom or the street. He's always running off to some hidden location - just change there.

Pretty much my most favourite depiction of Superman will always remain Jose Luis Garcia Lopez' version from the early/mid 80's - as far as I'm concerned, the proportions are spot on:-

Not too small, not too big.

Agreed.

I still dig the Earth One suit...it's modern and looks good

Not too small, not too big.

They still use Garcia-Lopez' version for merchandising and on their style sheets from what I've heard. His Superman is pretty much the official DC Superman visual.

And that's a good thing, he's fantastic and always has been.

The big S only works on an equally big chest. It looks fine on that image because Superman has a chest the size of a bus.

A Shield that big on screen would be overwhelming and would not be taken seriously I feel. Especially if they wanted to use a rich color palate. They would have to make a very dark suit to accommodate this. Too small, however, is underwhelming (SR). Meet in the middle and its a solid shield.

Co-signed, DF.

Always hated Ross Superman 'S'; always looked to me like Superman had flown into a kite.

glad to see there are SOME people on these boards that understand the concept of spacing and design. kudos to you mates.

I don't know why more people don't like the big "S", i love the big "S"...
actually there are quite a bit of people that want to see a big shield. the reason a big shield isn't ideal to others is because it's not aesthetically pleasing on an actual costume. see?

disregard the man's build and the texture of the suit, the size of the shield is just overkill and comical.

and everyone keeps talking about how they like/don't like the Earth One suit but no one has made a manip of it...
actually...everyone keeps talking about they LIKE the Earth One suit. there are only a handful of people that don't like it...

the shield on Dean Cain and the edited shield on Reeve look stupid...that's WAY TOO BIG! It doesn't have to be that big

Basically it's very Curt Swan inspired, (Curt Swan 2.0)which is not a bad thing at all.

Yes, when I draw Superman, it looks like the Garcia-Lopez version.

It's also why I'm sad that we missed our opportunity with Routh because he resembles that interpretation so much :csad:

Not bad. Not too crazy about the belt. Though the red on it does offset the no trunks idea, the additional s-shield doesn't work for me, nor did it in SR. The s-shield on the chest I don't like at all. To me, that should be the LEAST changed of the costume. Also, the cape too high going up the back of the neck. Maybe it's that the fabric of the cape is a bit stiff which makes it more pronounced.

But overall not bad. Also, I like that there's no differently-shaded blue parts, and the seams aren't too in your face like I've seen on some concepts. That drives me nuts. And I like the boots as well. The laces add texture in a functional way, rather than a let's-add-texture-for-the-sake-of-adding-texture kind of way.

Just realized that I didn't post my suit redesign here. It didn't get a lot of reactions in the manip thread and since I'm reworking it, I wouldn't mind some ideas/advices. ;)

Credits goes to dulcetpine, jmc, bunk and shiskababe.

I like this one as well but still don't care to see it on Superman
