I plan to hate this movie because it's not RAINBOW SIX.

Cool pic. Neat Ducati. Although I think he should have leathers, and a helmet, I guess that won't fly in this type of movie.

Anyway, I had no idea this was being directed by Kenneth Brannagh, cool. Also the first Jack Ryan film not based on a book is interesting. This comes out the end of next year, so I might keep an eye on this movie.

Evie hasn't had the opportunity to even be as tested as Knightley who isn't that great anyway IMO, but lets be real, this role isn't going to be Vesper, the actress will need to look pretty, be spunky and act like the ideal wifey, either actress could comfortably pull this role off.
:odisagree here keira is time and time again the most under-appreciated and underrated actress going today

she outshined carey mulligan in never let me go yet people go nuts over her for some reason yet slam knightly who constantly gives good performances

:highfive:

It seems it is easily for many to ignore Knightley's qualities because the general line of insulting her because she is a beautiful woman and while also not having seen her outside of the obvious films. Not saying Hunter is doing that, in fact he isn't, but many do.

Just like people never wear seatbelts or lock car doors when they exit. Or even use keys to start the car (unless the plot calls for a suspense moment).

^I just assume every car in movie world is a push button. That we never see them push.

Kind of like the "Sean Connery as Ian Fleming's James Bond" sort of thing?

Yeah that was what I was thinking unless there is an issue with Clancy I am unaware of.

Well to each their own, I am personally big Joe Wright. Probably my favorite "newer" director, on par with Nolan. P&P, Atonement and Hanna are all beautiful and I am a big fan of his casting, editing and his all encompassing storytelling. Also always seems to make the right choice when it comes to score.
I hated Hanna but I liked what he did with Atonement, the big tracking shot near the end was a thing of beauty.

Question though, how many of her lesser mainstream films have you seen?
I'm not sure to be fair, the last 3 she has made didn't interest me at all.

Meh, everything is underrated or overrated these days depending on which side of the coin you fall on.

Heh, you know I never really payed attention to that, but it does happen a lot. I'm going to start paying more attention to this from now on. Also I know what you're saying, but that pic just makes me shake my head, at least give him a helmet.

Anyway, I didn't know Kevin Costner was in this too. Plus Kenneth Brannagh isn't only directing, but also playing a role in this too, cool.

It's a movie not a safety lesson. Him on the bike if not a chase will probably be just a few seconds to signify that he's in another setting now and he's the type of guy who rides a bike (who Jack Ryan certainly is not). Just like the transporter in ST. A lot of things are used shorthand to signify something rather than being a naturalistic approach to it. Like how cars only run out of gas in horror movies because the plot requires it.

I'm certainly aware of all of that, and I know it's not a safety lesson. Just my opinion, no big deal.

The bigger issue for me is Jack on a bike. He's not the action type, he's not one to put himself in any sort of unnecessary danger. I can't remember where it was but in one of the books there was something about him not liking them.

He's kind of a wuss really. Not the man of action type.

Man... I'm of these character name titles.

John Carter, Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan...

They all sound pretty boring to me. And oddly enough they all start with the letter "J."

Blame the authors. John and Jack are the most common hero names ever.

I'm not a huge Joe Wright fan but he is 'THE MAN' of the tracking shots right now.

The WW2 Dunkirk evactuation shot in Atonement and Eric Bana German Subway tracking long tracking shot are a thing of beauty.

So I'm totally looking forward to this movie...love the Jack Ryan franchise

That's why Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are such great names, obscure enough to hold the "famous" aspect in real life but also interesting for their respective mediums.

without reading the whole thread, is Chris playing Jack Ryan or Jack Ryan jr?

He's playing Jack Ryan, they just aged him down.

How old is Jack Ryan supposed to be in the books? Harrison Ford was in his early 50s when he played him, but Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and now Chris Pine were/are all in their early 30s when they played him.

President Ryan is 63.

Chris Pine's new trek: 'Jack Ryan

Chris Pine knows a thing or two about taking on iconic screen roles, though he still finds playing the hero somewhat daunting.

The actor is starring for the second time as Enterprise captain James Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness due out May 17. And on Christmas Day, he'll step into the title role for the action thriller Jack Ryan, based on the character who frequents many of Tom Clancy's novels.

The CIA analyst role has been played by a who's-who of Hollywood leading men, from Alec Baldwin (1990's The Hunt for Red October) to Harrison Ford (1992's Patriot Games, 1994's Clear and Present Danger) and Ben Affleck (2002's The Sum of All Fears).

"It's always a bit overwhelming," admits Pine, 32. "What I do know is my job is to do my best to bring whatever new colors I have to these franchises."

In Jack Ryan, directed by Kenneth Branagh, Pine takes the character to its beginning, where the injured Marine is recruited by CIA vet Kevin Costner to work as a high-level analyst. The two are pitted against a Russian oligarch (played by Branagh) who is pulling the strings of the financial market and delving into international terrorism with potential global catastrophic results.

The Russian angle might sound like classic Clancy, who set his novels during and in the shadow of the Cold War. But this original story has been brought to the present.

"We cheated a little," says Branagh. "Mr. Clancy is very aware of and very behind the concept, but we put Jack Ryan in the here and now."

"We take the fundamentals of the myth of Jack Ryan and do an original film that was never a book," says Pine. "We're making our own story in a modern-day 2013."

Of vital importance for Pine was keeping Ryan very much the everyman, with his greatest asset being his analytical brain.

"He doesn't drive great cars, he doesn't know five different martial arts," says Pine. "He works in the CIA, but he's a normal guy with a normal wife (fiancée, actually) thrown into these extraordinary circumstances."

Costner's character "shows him right away that it's not physical prowess or shooting a gun that's Jack's weapon, but it's how smart he is," adds Pine.

It's this everyman quality that Branagh believes has made Ryan such an enduring film and literary hero.

"We're probably not going to be James Bond or Jason Bourne or Ethan Hunt," says Branagh. "The audience feels they could just be Jack Ryan and they like him for that. If you ever wanted to be involved in global conspiracies and espionage, then Jack Ryan is the way in. And it puts us in the center of the story."

Branagh, as Viktor Cherevin, was eager to take on the villain role even if it meant juggling his directing duties while tangling with the difficult Russian language and its Cyrillic alphabet.

"That was certainly challenging. I'm not a man who is good with languages," says Branagh. "But I enjoyed going up against the Cyrillic alphabet. I think the alphabet probably won. But I had fun trying to hold my own."

The film also stars Keira Knightley as Ryan's fiancée, Cathy, who does take away, slightly, from the everyman concept

"That part is about aspirations," says Branagh about casting her. "I was thinking if Jack Ryan can get Keira Knightley, maybe we all have a chance."

Yo, why is this movie taking so long and where is the marketing? I keep forgetting about this. I've seen pics of Pike riding the motorcycle and everything like a year ago.
