James Cameron's Sequel to "AVATAR" - Part 1

I think the writing for his character and his motivations needed more polish. He was serviceable but that's not enough for a film for Avatar.

I thought his motivations were very strong. He was a quadriplegic who was promised the chance to walk again if he came to Pandora (and took his brother's position) and would eventually be granted a full recovery if he helped the RDA.

Eventually, he realizes what they've been doing to the Na'vi is wrong but his motivations for what they were doing in the first place, were for an extremely good reason.

The short scene with him getting kicked out of the bar added on the DVD actually helps even more in selling him as someone looking for something to fight for after losing his ability to be in the military. It also shows how solitary his life in his cramped apartment is. It sounds small, odd but I think it helps the character and the film tremendously. The scene also sets up a nice contrast between earth and Pandora. It's always baffled me that Cameron cut it.

Agreed, and I was surprised they cut the line from the trailer "all I ever wanted was a single thing worth fighting for".

Both that line, as throwaway as it sounds, and the expanded prologue showing how Jake has no life on Earth, add to his character.

Today lunch with James Cameron and Arnold in Santa Monica

I wouldn't say so. Arnold and Cameron are very close pals who probably lunch together a lot.

James Cameron to Shoot Avatar Sequels in New Zealand

20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment have announced that the upcoming sequels to James Cameron's Avatar will all be shot in New Zealand. The three sequels will be shot back-to-back with reportedly significant subsidies from the New Zealand government.

The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later. Production is expected to begin next year with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang all returning in their respective roles.

Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment banner. Writers Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages) are all currently penning the individual sequels.

"Avatar" 2-4 To Cost At Least $415 Million

Having struck a deal with the New Zealand government for increased production subsidies, director James Cameron is officially set to shoot all three "Avatar" sequels in that country. Cameron says all three films will be shot back-to-back and released from late 2016. The combined budget is said to be at least $415 million U.S. dollars.
NZ Prime Minister John Key announced the deal in a tweet. The agreement includes commitments from 20th Century Fox on spending on production in New Zealand, as well as crew quotas and a commitment for New Zealand to host the premiere for one of the three sequels.
Cameron, who is about to become a New Zealand resident, expects to work with Peter Jackson and his Weta workshop to avoid stretching the resources available. He adds that: "It's important for everyone to know this isn't just about the Avatar films directly, it's about trying to lift up the New Zealand film industry, incubate new talent and develop new IP."
New production incentives in New Zealand give rebates of 15-20%, with an extra 5% rebate if filmmakers provide benefits to the country.

So damn stoked for these sequels. I'm a big Cameron fanboy, and love the first Avatar.

Arnold doing motion capture for like the King of an unseen as yet Pandoran race (that of course all have Austrian accents for some reason) would be just amazing to me.

what if the first movie undeperforms(based on the budget ) and the public doesnt like where the story is going?because they have so much cgi they can rewrtitte the second and third movie after the second.which is what i think will happen. Cameron will not stop with the writting until every movie is out. if he feels like the third act in the 4th movie is not right he will change it.

i know already know that the second movie will feel like a 2 hour tv episode. they will not realese a full movie with a start and an end. it will be about introducing a big story.

I think a project like this, and the way a lot of serialized film series are, are getting closer to tv actually, in that sequels are now made much faster these days and many creators do think of expansive universes and sagas. It has it's downsides and it's upsides, but frankly what we have is the modern equivalent of the serials and matinee fare or the 30's, 40's and 50's. Everything old is new again.

Actually, James Cameron said that he wanted each film to be able to stand on its oun and didn't want to repeat the error of The Matrix films.

Yeah, but... That's kind of what all the directors of these kind of things say. :yay:

Does James Cameron generally lie?

Did he specifically call out the Matrix sequels?
