While perhaps not a flop, The Abyss didn't exactly set the box office on fire when it was released. It made only around $90 million worldwide and it had a $70 million budget, which meant it was a lot more expensive than, say, Batman and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Yeah but even then the movie didn't flop. Also, it's reputation has grown over the years, especially with the release of the Director's Cut.

Wasn't it set in stone already that Cameron was going to shoot these three movies in New Zealand, as early as last year? He already bought land there and preparing to move his family there with him.

And a big reason why Fox and Cameron are basing production there in NZ: the kickbacks. They can claim a rebate on the films and say, "They cost $150M to make each, thanks to the incentives."

Isn't that a flop? And i barelly see anybody talking about that film, so i'm not sure if its reputation has really grown.

I hate to say this, but The Abyss was kinda boring. Though I saw it as a teen; I may want to catch it again like how I gave 2001 another chance.. and now I love it.

I liked The Abyss but I like underwater movies usually and there aren't too many of them.

Speaking of which, didn't Cameron say that he was going to shot part of Avatar 2 deep in the Mariana Trench? That could be interesting to see, both in how she shoots it, how it looks in the actually movie, AND what the story reason is.

I heard they also built a new studio in LA for the sequels as well. I wonder what that will be used for?

i think if the script is good they should leak 70% on the internet. if its good they should get the internet community on their side.

Financially it may have underperformed however no one can deny it's impact when it comes to tech innovation. Plus in my opinion the peformances were really good.
TO be honest alot of classic SCI-FI movies seem to be forgotten by the general public as time goes on however that doesn't mean that they don't have a reputation.
Films like Star Wars continue to be in the public eyes due to the exposure as well Jurassic Park but ask the general public these days about 2001 : A Space Oddessey chances are many have forgotten about the movie.

Yup.

First time i saw 2001 was strangely enough in 2001 :hehe: on VHS and it did bore me.
However i had the pleasure of watching it on the big screen cause between 2002 and 2003 various classics were shown on the big screen again here in Holland.
Saving private Ryan , Alien , Aliens , Blade Runner and of course 2001.
Seriously watching it on the big screen is amazing. The opening sequences and the frikkin lightshow :wow:

LOL no.
Cameron may have that whole attitude of besting everyone but he's not that crazy. It's just a waste of money. Cameron just loves underwater exploration hence why he wanted to dive to the Mariana Trench with todays updated technology.
Of course he has filmed everything but the footage was disappointing.

From what we do now is that Cameron is going to have underwater scenes in the sequels and they are inspired by his underwater explorations.
And Cameron was also experimenting with underwater mo-cap.

It's more about logistics.
Cameron bought land and basically it setting up his production facility in NEW Zealand. It's all about shooting the stuff there and handing it over to WETA immediatly .

Am really excited to see the underwater scenes in Avatar 2, knowing Cameron they will be amazing, but if they're no longer going off planet in the 3rd film, then what is he planning next?

UPDATED: Sam Worthington & Zoë Saldana To Return For ‘Avatar’ Sequels; Fox Eyeing End Of Year Start

UPDATED: Avatar stars Sam Worthington and Zoë Saldana will reprise their roles in the next three sequels to James Cameron‘s 2009 sci-fi fantasy blockbuster, Fox announced today. Worthington returns to the franchise as Jake Sully, the wheelchair-bound Marine who finds new life on the alien world of Pandora with the Na’vi people and Neytiri, a Na’vi huntress, in the first $2.8 billion-scoring film. Saldana will reprise her Neytiri role joining Worthington in Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 which Cameron and Jon Landau will produce via Lightstorm Entertainment. These are new deals for Worthington and Saldana but are basically in line with their previous deals, Deadline is hearing. When a third sequel was added to Cameron’s grand plan, renegotiations were in order.

The currently untitled sequels will be filmed back to back with Avatar 2 set to release in December 2016. The subsequent sequels will follow in December 2017 and 2018, respectively. A start date is still TBA but Fox is eyeing December 2014/January 2015 to begin filming through March 2015. They have to give the actors four months of prep. Deadline hears the plan is to shoot the films’ extensive motion capture scenes first, then film all the live-action footage. But a source with knowledge of the production says it’s ultimately up to Cameron to decide if that’s how they play it. Economical back-to-back sequel shooting worked for Peter Jackson’s recent Hobbit sequels. And with WETA running point on the sequels it will streamline VFX continuity from film to film, especially given the introduction of new and different creatures and worlds. Meanwhile Cameron is scripting Avatar 2 with Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Avatar 3 with Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Avatar 4 with Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger).

Zoe Saldana will be the richest woman in Hollywood soon.

Avatar, Star Trek, GotG...

She probably isn't getting paid jack for Guardians. Good to see the awful acting will continue in the sequel

I'm willing to bet she's getting more than Dave and probably a little more than Pratt.

Iconic. So iconic. Him and princess what's-her-name and Mean Military Man. Memorable names!

There's nothing narratively groundbreaking about Avatar, but the story was solidly told, well structured, and well paced with few plot holes.
