This is working under the assumption they cared about what the alt-right had to say. They don't. They didn't want to associate the brand of Disney with what he wrote, and as things went on, other things started coming back up, which is exactly what they didn't want.

Do they have to keep James Gunn employed just because the alt-right wanted him fired, no matter how Horn and Iger felt on the matter?

They knew what he wrote. Disney is thorough when they hire anyone, much less someone who is going to be in charge of helming a $180 million movie for them. And we don't think they checked his Twitter? They knew, but they had the good sense then to understand it was schlocky provocateur crap and if he knocked it off, they'd do business. He had, he continued to do so and apologized for bad behavior, and they were happy until the alt-right drudged this up. Then less than a day after that, they fired him.

It's basically this without the Claude Rains charm.

Then why do you think Gunn went on a deletion spree?
