Based on your description, I would side with him. But I need to learn more before I can say for sure.
Just google Cody Garbrandt tweets.

That doesn't matter. People still think of James Gunn as the mind behind the Guardians film adaptations.
Are all the people defending James Gunn going to come to the defense of Cody Gabrandt now?
He's coming under fire for some embarrassing tweets he wrote when he was like 21 years old before he was in the UFC. Most of them were made six years ago, plus or minus.
What about the actors who wrote that letter about the social media mob mentality? The media mob is now going after Cody Garbrandt. Is this a teachable moment or not?
It's not isolated to the alt-right.
That fact continues to escape them.
So let's fire RDJ right now then. Even though he has redeemed himself, he was a scumbag like 15 years ago. Just blacklist him again
Meanwhile, firing James Gunn has emboldened bad faith, dishonest alt-righters to continue to weaponize social media and group-think by going after Sarah Jeong, who was just hired by the New York Times for the editorial board.
She made some lighthearted jokes about white people on Twitter over the years, so the same alt-right crybabies (including Fox News) who targeted Gunn are going after her and using these Tweets to demand the NYT fire her. The NYT, actually understanding what integrity is, of course has already dismissed this out of hand.
But it's an interesting story. Disney empowered them and they'll continue doing this. Only Woke Twitter and Tumblr is coming to Jeong's defense because her jokes were about "white people" and "old white men," so clearly they're jokes. But given the logic of some on this board, the NYT should fire her, because "we don't know if these jokes reflect the real Sarah Jeong or not." Just take away employment from her for a few years until she's truly proven she can have a second shot.
Yes, the 1% know who James Gunn is.
Oh this thread has turned into a discussion about whether in general a person should be fired over their tweets, I see.
No one should be fired over years-old tweets, imo, except very special circumstances. Just an apologize and clarification that the person has been educated and changed should be enough. The lenses in 2018 and 2008 are very different. The eras people grew up in are different. A 20-something and a 50-year-old man saying the same thing at the same time will be treated differently by me.
For Sarah Jeong, I dont want to read her tweets (things like that are triggering to me) but like women being hurt by men is more serious than men being hurt by women, people say offensive things to black and Jewish people is more serious than saying offensive things to white people (if you dont agree with either or both theres no need to @ me neither you nor I will change our mind).
False equivalence. Downey wasn't "joking" about raping women and children.

Yep. RDJ only ever did damage to himself with his drug use. And he went to prison, so he already paid the price for his behavior.
At what point in time was pedophilia considered socially acceptable?
I'm Hispanic, and that's grossly hypocritical. Racism is racism, period. Either you're against it or you're not. If you're fine with racism towards a particular group of people, then that's racism. You're quite literally saying gross, vicious, racist behavior is not so bad when it's directed at certain races.
This is definitely true. And I would say Gunn hasn't been punished in that big of away. If you see it as punishment of course. He hasn't been exiled. He has been dropped from a film project. No one is saying racism or pedophilia is acceptable. But there are degrees to every offense. We don't just cut the hand off or exile everyone who ever stole anything. As I have been saying throughout this discussion, context matters.

If she had said those things about minorities or people of the Jewish faith, the New York Times editorial board would have fired her already.

But should she be fired because they were about white people?
It is a good lesson on thinking before you tweet jokes about pedophilia and rape. You never know where your career or online behavior will take you.Oh yeah, no biggie! Fired and publicly shamed by a film studio that dominates the domestic BO. Released from a signed contract immediately, with no recourse, and despite an exemplary employee record. His reputation dragged through the mud by the All Star Alt-Right/SJW Team Up, his career prospects severely diminished, all because he had the sheer gall to stand up to Putin's Boy. The punishment certainly fit the crime!

I have watched all of John Mulaney's specials on Netflix. Some of my favorites.Oh, please. I watched John Mulaney's 2015 concert video tonight, and he whipped off 5 child molestation jokes in an hour. YOU'LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN YOU MONSTER!
The lesson we've learned here is an old one. Bullies don't stop when you back down to them. Especially when those you thought were allies turn against you.
No he actually committed crimes like breaking into neighbors homes and stealing for his drug habit. He served a prison sentence. And by all accounts, he's a great guy who really cleaned up his act. But there is clearly a cognitive dissonance going on in fan culture here.
But should she be fired because they were about white people? She made jokes about "hate" can we "forgiven" her?![]()

I have a few questions for you Zarex, and I would appreciate it if you didn't avoid certain parts of the post like you have done in the past, and not simply play the outraged card. I want to see how you respond to the specifics.
Are you referring to him talking about the Catholic religion, in which he was raised? Was this on his personal twitter or in a comedy special setting? Did any joke contain him raping a child or having a child do something to him? Did he make any jokes about raping women? Is John Mulaney currently employed by Disney?
Specifically on Gunn. If Gunn had not posted these things on his blog and his twitter, would there be anything to dig up from the past? If there was nothing wrong with him doing these things, why did he apologize for doing them, while claiming he has changed?
I avoid certain parts not because I'm overwhelmed by the sheer logic of your arguments. It's because I have a job and a family and there's other stuff I'd rather be doing than engaging in a point by point rebuttal of a multi paragraph word salad.
Mulaney made jokes about the Catholic Church scandal, being confused for a child molester and the incest subplot in Back to the Future. But I'm specifically talking about John saying his parents would always take the side of adults over him, and describing how they would have waved off a specific type of sex act between prepubescent Mulaney and an adult male.
I'm specifically talking about those on this thread who are saying these types of jokes are NEVER ok. And how a CONSISTENT Disney can NEVER hire John Mulaney
Gunn was wrong! A bakers dozen of jokes (over many years and thousands of posts) were gross and, even worse, not funny. He was embarrassed that the left-right Dream Team had put him in its crosshairs, and probably upset as well about the problems his words from years ago had caused for his cast and crew and the guy who took a chance on him back in 2012.
This should have been an apology and a teachable moment about social media's damaging effects. The firing remains ridiculous.
So his teachable moment gets to be different from Roseanne's because?
