Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!! - Part 1

You don't think she deserved to be fired for a racist attack on a person. Why?

I thought she should have had the opportunity to explain (I didn't know she was black!) and/or apologize. If her cast and crew came out in her defense and told us that this was completely out of character and not the Roseanne they knew, I wouldn't have had a problem with her continuing. Obviously that didn't happen.

For as many people that can't stand Hannity, there are those that support him.

The outcry is just louder on the left right now, so right wingers are more prone to being effected. If everyone acted on principle instead of bias, we wouldn't have these issues. If one were to find certain jokes offensive then it shouldn't matter who's delivering them.

And again if Gunn had tweeted about young girls instead of young boys, I have a feeling that a lot of these fans jumping through hoops to defend him would be sitting on their hands.
Do you really think gender matters with child molestation, in terms of how the public view it? Because Gunn wrote tweets about the rape of women. Hell he wrote a blog that involved a lesbian comic book character being raped "straight" by Tony Stark.

It has been said more then once in this thread, but a lot of Gunn's defense has to do with people liking him and/or his films.

She did try to explain and apologize. She did it all over twitter for hours. She kept on changing her excuse.

You know the one who attacked Gunn before about that blog wasn't an "alt-right cybernazi." It was a liberal website called The Mary Sue.

As Zarex said...the messenger matters.

So anyway, there's this:

https://www.shortlist.com/entertainment/exclusive-dave-bautista-interview-james-gunn-guardians-of-the-galaxy-firing-quit-twitter/368730

Dave Bautista says he has asked Marvel to release him from his contract over the studio’s firing of director James Gunn.

Speaking to Shortlist in his first interview since the controversial decision, Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the MCU, said he would be doing Gunn a “disservice” if he didn’t step away from the franchise.

The director was fired last month after alt-right activists unearthed a series of offensive tweets from several years ago.

“Nobody’s defending his tweets, but this was a smear campaign on a good man,” he said, speaking to ShortList’s Tom Ellen. “I spoke to Chris Pratt the day after it happened and he’s a bit religious so he wanted time to pray and figure it out, but I was more like: ***** this. This is ********. James is one of the kindest, most decent people I’ve met.”

Yes I do.

There are countless stories every year of female teachers having sex with underage students. If those roles were in reverse the media and twitterverse would be extremely vocal about it and treating it as an epidemic.

Exactly! I think there was a scenario by which Ms. Barr could have retained her job, but she kept digging the hole.

The Mary Sue had a thoughtful article that discussed Mr. Gunn's problematic earlier work. It was "journalism" not an "attack".

I wonder if anyone else will follow if Bautista does indeed leave?

They fired her immediately without contacting her or even bothering to investigate.

How could she have kept her job?

These are not opinions befitting somebody who’s been given the task of bringing a major part of the Marvel Universe to the big screen (a set of characters, I might add, that includes a lesbian superhero couple, not that they’ll be appearing in Guardians).

This discovery of Gunn’s apparently joyful and public feelings about women and sexuality are, to say the least, deeply disappointing. The fact that it was out, on the internet, for more than a year before his attachment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and not even taken down or otherwise covered up until now, is even more so. Gunn was also publicly endorsed by Joss Whedon. Plenty of the people I follow are saying they will personally boycott the movie or calling for Marvel Studios to remove him from the project. Boycotting a major release in the MCU is not something I personally have the professional ability to do (providing information on whether a movie treats its female characters with respect is something I consider to be a vital part of this site), or something I feel I can, personally, advocate for or against to other people. The extent to which one can separate the artist from their work is a very personal decision that varies from person to person. Additionally, Gunn is by no means the only person who will have made Guardians when the film rolls into theaters in 2014 or who stands to lose their job prospects or salary should it fail.

As for calling for Marvel to remove him… I could honestly see that happening if it gets enough buzz. The release date is still two years off, and we live in a world where Brett Ratner is pressured into resigning from producing the Oscars for a gay slur, surely fans can hold Marvel accountable for the behavior of the directors they choose. Whether their opinions will be numerous to be listened to is something I can’t be certain of.

How could she have kept her job?

If she had the support of her cast and crew she would probably still be working.

That is disgusting. That is also not the pedophilia we are talking about here.

So what you are saying is what she meant, what she said, doesn't matter. Its the PR game?

I had a funny feeling Bautista would be the one to threaten to walk after his initial tweet about it.

Then he should just leave. Have John Cena or whichever meathead take his role and just dress them up in body paint.

I don’t understand the point of losing out on Disney money over this man. This cast is not playing the game correctly, they’re gonna end up having a rude awakening when they see their franchise gets shelved.

It’s also really telling that it’s everybody on the outside talking and speaking up, but it’s going on a month now and we haven’t even heard anything else from Gunn himself. I still think Disney may have found something else really foul on him and just chose to fire him before it became too much.

They fired her immediately upon hearing about the tweets.

Gunn has the support of his cast and crew, how is that working for him.

In other words, betray your friends as long as the paycheck is good? Yeah, that is an awful mentality. Like, I cannot state how much I disagree with that general view of life. Money is not everything. Clearly he values his friendship with Gunn more than he does Disney money. Good for him.

WHA????

If a male teacher in his mid 30's had sex with a 14-15 year old girl, that's not considered child abuse?
It is most certainly child abuse. It is rape. Its just not pedophilia.

Too be fair, if he had no concern about money, he'd just walk away.

You think anyone else would? Even Bautista is like, "I will do what my contract says".

In any strike or potential walk out, it always takes 1 person to cross the battle line before others follow. I cannot say they all will ask to be released also, but it is more likely now than it was before he did this.

Remember, Hugo Weaving asked to not be Red Skull again. He had a contract for more movies. He got his wish.

Thing is people sometimes money isn’t everything. Bautista knows fully well the ramifications of what he’s doing, he’s just standing up for a friend he feels was unjustly fired. Anyone who says they don’t have thier own personal line in the sand about what type of company they are willing to work for is lying to themselves.
