Iron Man Jeff Bridges is Obadiah Stane

OMG, how awesome was Bridges in this? He was soo good. He was slimy, yet there was something you kinda hated to like about this guy. He was a great character to play off. The scene of him and Tony talking near the reactor after the press conference was really good stuff.

I really liked Bridges. He had a certain..warmth to Stane, but when he gets vicious, he goes all out!

Quite frankly one of the better supervillains in movies, even if he is a lot less flashy. He just had a depth to him. You really want to like this guy and throughout the first act he seems like a sympathetic villain who might really like Tony, but it is all a facade and he is so slimy. He is the definition of a corporate shark and when he turns on Tony in the red carpet scene is one of the classier scenes of betrayal I've seen in a mainstream Hollywood scene in a long time. And when you find out his true actions and allies it seems unbelievable but Bridges sells it so well with such charming menace.

I mean really, every scene he and RDJ had on screen, right from the first one, is one of the better scenes of the movie. Two of my favorite scenes are still Tony announcing leaving the weapons business (great moment for RDJ and his character with sitting in front of the press, eating the burger) and Stane's reaction followed with their conversation afterwards. I also think the scene with the pizza is just a great little moment for both actors that says a lot about hte characters without relying on heavy exposition, but then the scene where he paralyzes Tony is really shockingly brutal.

A brilliant performance, while not among the top comic book villains, one of the more memorable performances and accessible.

So is Iron Monger the villian or Mandarin?

Well, technically Iron Monger was the villain, but I guess with the mention of the Ten Rings organization they're setting up Mandarin quite nicely as the main villain for the sequel.

So I'm trying to get this straight as to what exactly Stane's problem was with Tony.

So he helped create Stark Industries with Tony's father...after he died, he took over the company until Tony was 21...by then, Stane had to hand over a company that HE built over 20 years... This doesn't sit well with him but he keeps it in beacuse Tony is a genius.

He and Tony are partners and work well together for many years despite a growing disdain by Stane for the man running what he believes should be HIS company.

So finally, he decides to put a hit on Tony so he can take over the company.

On some level, I'm sure Stane did look upon Tony as a pseudo son and did have some legitamate feelings towards him but at the same time, I also think there is a hint of Stane being jealous over Tony's intelligence and ingenuity.

That scene inpaticular with his engineers when he just loses it and goes, "Tony Stark built this in a CAVE! Out of a bunch of scraps!" stood out for me in the theatre and made me think that deep down...Tony is everything Stane wishes he could be. That office scene with Pepper further reinforced that feeling "Tony is very lucky to have a woman like you" ...

Am I close?

He was an excellent villain. Perfect casting. Too bad he won't be in the sequel.

I thought Jeff Bridges was terrific, and I hope that IM's next villain will have a good actor portraying him as well. SM2 certainly benefited from having a capable actor playing Doc Ock.

They should have kept OS alive.Bridges was amazing in this and would be a great character to keep around.

Then again,SHIELD could have hauled him away with his suit and told Stark he was gone.

I'm not familiar w/Stane at all; I don't remember seeing him in any comics.

Tony announced the company was going to stop selling weapons. Stocks dropped 56%.

Stane was also selling weapons under the table to terrorist. Tony was going to stop that.

I think Stane felt it was a company that he built and wasn't going to let Tony stop the company from what it has always done...Make and sell weapsons.

"Do you think just because you have an idea, that makes it yours?"

It wasn't just about maintaining the status quo though; he's the one who put the hit on Tony. Tony was cool with what they were doing before he made that trip. Stane simply wanted Tony out of the way because he was jealous and wanted the company all to himself.

Stane wanted Tony dead way before he got back to the states and announced not making anymore weapons. He paid the terrorists to kill Tony Stark.

I was surprised to find out that he wanted Stark dead before he left the trade. My guess is jsut from the early photos of Stane on Newsweek looking down at the world and then behind a 21 year-old Tony Stark looking back at the new face of his company said it all. He admires Tony's genius and lifestyle as shows early on in his speech, but thinks it should be his. He built this company and should be in control of its destiny, not this kid who inherited it. He had to turn it over.

From the scenes early on in the movie between the two, I think he really liked Tony and did not hate him (until maybe the end fight), but the business was first and always resented this kid with a chip on shoulder and an ego as big as his being in charge and holding the company back. Plus, after finding out that he was going to possibly lose the company he built to Tony's shenanigans about not wanting to be a weapons manufacturer anymore offended him, so he def. wanted Tony dead, then. I think the line "Tony Stark built this in a cave," is dead on. He is jealous of Tony's genius, success and fame and wants it. Even if he does consider Tony a friend and almost a nephew in some ways. The fact he can be so cold blooded and greedy about it with a smile is what makes him so dangerous.

I loved his performance in the role, even if I don't know anything about the character.

After he realizes that Stark has survived his hit and escaped through the construction of a suit and sustains his life using the arc reactor technology, Stane tries very subtly to switch gears into learning how Tony built that mini reactor. After failing, he decides that he's wasted enough time and he's just gonna risk it all and kill Tony for the arc technology in his chestpiece, especially since Pepper just found out everything he's been up to.

I think Stane figures that he's going to get caught and gets paranoid and eventually becomes insane, wanting to use the suit now to kill everyone who knows about his intentions. Originally, his plan might've been to destroy Tony, the agents, Pepper, or whoever until he was able to claim Stark Industries on his own, but psychologically, it was almost like a suicide mission, just for him to get a taste, for just a few moments of what it felt like to be Tony Stark.

^Well I think by that point he sees the Iron Monger suit as his only way out. Probably figures that as long as he's wearing it nobody can touch him.
