Jeffrey Wright IS Commissioner Gordon

I'd at the very least hope so. It's also why I wouldn't be big on, say, Bruce being played by an actor of a different ethnicity. Bruce Wayne's backstory involves a family which is quite heavily involved with old money, some incarnations, like White Knight, have the history of the Wayne's and their wealth going as far back as the 1700s if I remember right. Cast Bruce with a black actor, that immediately changes, as does the character himself arguably to the point of being nigh unrecognisable as Bruce Wayne.
I'd be kinda interested if Idris Elba was cast to play Batman. More than I am with Pattison or Wright.

Elba is flat out way too old, anyway. Plus, I think he's up with Tom Hardy as arguably over fan-cast. He's a good actor, sure. But I feel like anyone who's a guy and vaguely masculine has either/or fan cast.

I'd definitely pay good money to watch those two bounce off each other.

*replays that scene with Charles Manson in my head*

Honestly, his race can be part of the subtext that people can choose to read into it or not. I'd be very surprised if that became a more overt part of the story.

To me, by being a do-gooder in a corrupt city Gordon is an underdog. If there's any racial tension layered in there it only adds to that, but I'd say there's a low chance the movie would spell that out explicitly. It's still going to be designed as a 4 quadrant blockbuster meant to appeal to a mass, diverse audience and be a flagship superhero IP. It's not The Wire.
Precisely this. Of course they're not gonna make a Civil Rights biopic about Gordon being discriminated against in the Department. But they can weave it into the *subtext of the movie. You can imply it without outright saying it and you can still have Gordon rejecting the corrupt

As for Harvey Bullock:

If they cast Elba, I think I'd be interested enough to not focus on the age too much. It doesn't have to be young. I think there's potential for Michael B. Jordan.

Why does it have to be that way? Why can't the character not have that concept placed on it and have it be the way the character is I think, I think disliked for being a non dirty cop?

As a race changed Gordon he is one of my favorites so I am not opposed to it

That guy makes awesome GIFs. :hehe:

my only issue with this casting, if true, is the implications for a potential Barbara Gordon. If they are to keep Barbara as Jim's biological daughter, then that means Barbara would be black and it would be YET ANOTHER instance of a red-headed (female) character getting race-changed to African American.

Of course, they could always go the adopted daughter route and still make Barbara a white red-head. And, of course, this is even assuming Barbara would be a factor in the story at all given that it is focused on a younger Batman.

Still, though, if this is true, then it just seems to be part of this obvious trend. I mean, why does it only seem to be targeting white red-headed characters and making them black?

In a vacuum, I don't really have a problem with a black Commissioner Gordon or even a black Barbara Gordon. I have no real attachment to Barbara Batgirl as I do to Mary Jane Watson or Ariel (Little Mermaid). My favorite Batgirl will always be Cassandra Cain, who is half-Asian like me. So I would be much more sensitive about race-changing Cassandra Batgirl.

Since they race changed Commissioner Gordon by casting Jeffrey Wright as the new Gordon or so it seems...then I wonder if we get a black Barbara Gordon or a light skinned/biracial Barbara

As has been mentioned earlier in this thread there are black gals with red hair, so Barbara being black and a redhead isn't a stretch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Barbara post-Crisis was the daughter of Gordon's biological brother. So even if they went that route, wouldn't she still be black?

Either way, biracial girls can have red hair. As long as she has red hair, I'll be fine with it. It's a natural way to add diversity to these movies

Then I wonder who they can get? I mean I personally would go with Zendaya myself

I don’t think ethnicity changes matter all that much as long as the actor they get is a really strong fit with the character and the iconography of the character is still maintained.

Babs HAS to have red hair, that’s a core aspect of her look.

Precisely. I think Wright is a great fit for Gordon. My only concern about the racial background is how it affects Babs. Visual iconography is important for comic book superheroes. We have never gotten the true Barbara Gordon Batgirl in live action. If they can get a solid biracial redhead actress, like Erin Kellyman from Solo, for Babs, then I'm more than good.

Erin Kellyman would actually look believable as Jeffrey Wright/Gordon's daughter

If Barbara is black, and becomes Batgirl, the hair sticking out of her cowl can be a wig or something if the actress doesn’t wanna dye it. You know, like Batwoman. This isn’t hard.
