Jeffrey Wright IS Commissioner Gordon

I’m not talking about where a character comes from, I’m talking about what they look like. If you can understand where I’m coming from with regards to Storms visual identity, then why can you not understand where I’m coming from with Gordon?

I might buy this if you concede Bane and R'as sucked in the Nolan films. Can't have it both ways. Makes you come off as angry just because the actor is black, not just hating a race change.

In before he says Ra's is "racially ambiguous" in the comics.

Visually they looked similar to their comic counter parts, I don’t really know what else to tell you. The illusion doesn’t break for me. And yes, I do think Ra’s has always looked ethnically ambiguous in most instances. And I don’t appreciate the insinuation that I’ve got anything against Wright, thank you very much.

When your original comment is "typical Hollywood" it's hard not to read it as that.

I said ‘predictable’ - as in Hollywood making these type of character changes has become laughably par for the course. Yes, let’s not actually generate new ideas, let’s just take that existing thing and <insert characteristic> swap them. Hopefully that gives you some better context.

Eh, I doubt Reeves went at this point in the script and said gotta go PC, he went with talent first. Wright is going to knock it out of the park.Hell, I would even say his casting is too on the nose, since I can already tell how he is going to play Jim.

So of course you should be against this Batman movie on principle, since a Batman movie isn’t exactly generating a new idea.

Oh, don’t be ridiculous. We can still have existing characters and properties, but what we lack is genuinely new content made for today, featuring actors and characters that better resemble what demographics look like today. Too focused on recycling for blockbuster movies, not enough on developing, whilst trying to please everyone at the same time. Don’t act like it’s one extreme or the other.

But, outside of not looking like the comicbook counterpart, he will knock it out of the park tho. We both know this, no need to cross them arms and frown, bald man.

;)

The race swapping stuff is PC nonsense that I expect from Hollywood these days but it’s actually not my main gripe. I want characters to look like themselves because it break the illusion for me otherwise. The example I like to use are cosplayers. I’ve seen European girls dressed up as Storm from X-men, everything about their costume says ‘Storm’, but none of them actually look like Storm. Same if a Brunette is dressed as Supergirl. So the issue for me is that a characters visuals do matter, which is why I brought up Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn because the design within those films looks nothing like the character. I’m not asking for things to look 100% as they are in comics, that’s unreasonable, what I’m asking for is something resembling the character.

Were you this angry when they cast Michael Caine as Alfred in the Nolan movies? Or Michael Cough as Alfred in the Burton movies? Because neither of those dudes have the receding hairline or the thin mustache of the comic book Alfred. upload_2019-9-24_19-12-52.pngupload_2019-9-24_19-13-39.pngupload_2019-9-24_19-14-34.png

If the visuals not matching exactly is the hill you want to die on, it seems you should already be dead, JMC.

Considering Bane looks like comic book Bane, apparently I doubt this would be an issue. If some posters were in charge of these decisions, we'd never get a black character in a major role in a Batman movie, or a hell of a lot of other superhero movies,

I said ‘resemble’. I didn’t say 100%. Anyway, I won’t derail the thread anymore. Y’all can go back to enjoying talking about the casting, and I can crawl back to my hole, awaiting the next thing complain about.......

Yes, he is a very good actor and I’m sure he will do good. :)

Correctomundo!

Good actor gets cast, with chops to spare, a solid filmography and a deliciously distinctive voice, for a role that physically demands little more than a mustache. But it's all rendered meaningless bc it's unforgivably PC to take all of those into account before race? Just dumb. People w criteria this tiny getting po'd is only a good thing.

Also here's my take on race-bending, race-lifting, whatever you want to call it: The characters from the era of comics that Gordon first appeared in weren't white because it was integral to their character, they were white because you could either be a hideously stereotypical caricature... or you could be white. That's why I haven't cared that a modern take on Archie would make Veronica Latina or Reggie Asian, that's why I haven't cared that Momoa is Aquaman and that's why I don't care now that Gordon will be black and Catwoman will be a woman of color.

Now, I don't care to see Fandom try to dictate this stuff (that James Bond HAS to be black or a woman, or else he's irrelevant, for instance), but if it's what the filmmaker wants, let them be.

You like your Commissioner Gordon to be white? Okay. You've had that, and truth be told, you'll probably have it again. But in the meantime, Wright is a helluva choice. Take it as a win and carry on.

Well said.
