Jeffrey Wright IS Commissioner Gordon

Bruce Wayne is old money. I’m talking centuries old, white privileged. And that’s the public perception in Gotham. You can NOT change his race, unlike Grayson, Gordon, Dent or Kyle. If they do, I will not watch.
The fact its old money doesn't have to be relevant and I can't imagine being able to buy into the central conceits of the Batman mythos but not being able to suspend your disbelief for multi-generational black wealth.

Can’t lie, I’m still not pleased with this casting at all. Wright is a great actor, no doubt! However, he is not Jim Gordon. I know people will say “race shouldn’t matter to these characters” but it does. Aesthetics are crucial to a character, if it wasn’t then people would be fine with changing Batman’s costume to pink feety pajamas. I’m just annoyed with changing race of characters for the sake of it, Perry White I didn’t mind, Nick Fury I was indifferent, HATED Johnny Storm and Wally West and with Gordon I’m irritated. Before you all claim me to be racist, I’d be JUST as annoyed if they tried to have a white man play Spawn or Black Panther etc. I’m fine with Wright being the only prominent cop in the film that interacts with Batman, but just don’t call him Gordon.

But Gordon’s skin color has nothing to do with his character. Batman in pink pajamas goes against the character. Changing Black Panther’s race goes against the character. This isn’t a good argument. You sound a little racist. Lol

My only thing with Batman is that if they were to get the batsuit right (by my standards or right), I prefer for there to be a certain degree of contrast between the cowl and the skin in his jaw area, so I wouldn't want him to be particularly dark-skinned. A lighter-skinned black guy, an asian guy, etc. doesn't concern me.

i'm more upset that live action alfred hasn't been bald with a pencil mustache.
when are we going to get comic accurate alfred?

hollywood is discriminating against middle aged bald mens.
Hey, I asked for Mark Rylance. :o

Batman is better as a super privileged white guy.
It certainly make him more interesting as a character. Regardless of whether you agree with it, the radical leftist interpretation of Bruce as a selfish rich white guy beating up poor minorities to gratify his own selfish desire for revenge, it is a fascinating interpretation (with some merit). Making Bruce mixed race certainly takes away such interesting interpretations and limits the exploration of themes relating to wealth in America. These characters are archetypes and changing Bruce's race dilutes his archetype.

With respect to Gordon, I actually think Gordon being black adds to the character. It certainly goes hand-in-hand with his modern portrayal as an outsider in the department, a lone good cop who doesn't fall in with the corrupt group think. Given the current issues about policing and race in North America, and particularly the US these days, I think Gordon being black adds a wonderful topicality and a fresh modern spin on the character that is well-suited to our current times.

Dear god, so (again) just because I prefer a character to look the way he always has, then your only logical conclusion is that I’m “racist”? just stop... you’re embarrassing yourself. Also you might want to look up the definition to that word before tossing it around so casually, given you don’t seem to understand it.

When it come to some characters changing their gender or race really doesn't bothered me at all. Now when it comes to Batman,Superman,Spidey,Blade,Ironman,Cap, etc, I prefer for them to be the race they was in the comics. The reason why is they are so many other characters out there that need their own movie. Instead of black Superman I rather see Steel & Black Lightening on the big screen instead. Instead of black Batman we got Black Panther and hopefully Batwing one day etc. Saying that it really don't bothered me at all with Gordon being black and Jeffery is a great actor. I think because a character like Gordon his race doesn't matter at all. Just my opinion though,if someone has a problem with it. I can see where they are coming from, especially being a comicbook reader. To be honest as a black man it bothered me they made Black Canary black. I guess they don't have no love for Vixen,Bumblebee or Rocket. I love how Marvel had Steve Rogers as Captain before making Falcon the new Captain America(It felt so natural, not force at all and no one complain except the Bucky lovers lol:cs:). I don't think anybody is racist for wanting some characters to look like they do in the comics. Come on guy can we all agree that Jeffery Wright is a fantastic actor and will do the role justice :brucebat::sh:.

We’re... we’re still on this, huh?

I looked up your posting history, noticed you haven't said a word about Collin Farrell as Penguin. I guess we can make an exception for the white guy.

Also haven’t said jack s*** about Zoe either soooo.... what’s your point? I actually LIKE her casting, crazy right? Lol Come on people, if you’re going to try and accuse someone of something disgusting then come with better attempts that warrant more merit. Also (had you looked hard enough) you’d also see that I said I wasn’t a fan of Pat Hingle as Gordon either, who (SHOCKER!) was white! Oh my.. However if you must know, I detest Farrell as the penguin but I look at him as a “best of a bad situation” type deal considering we almost got that obnoxious **** Jonah Hill. However, all that aside, I just have to say, bravo for having nothing better to do than read through my previous posts just to fit your silly narrative you’re trying to push on me.

Reposting because apparently I didn’t end this **** well enough the last time...
Also here's my take on race-bending, race-lifting, whatever you want to call it: The characters from the era of comics that Gordon first appeared in weren't white because it was integral to their character, they were white because you could either be a hideously stereotypical caricature... or you could be white. That's why I haven't cared that a modern take on Archie would make Veronica Latina or Reggie Asian, that's why I haven't cared that Momoa is Aquaman and that's why I don't care now that Gordon will be black and Catwoman will be a woman of color.

Now, I don't care to see Fandom try to dictate this stuff (that James Bond HAS to be black or a woman, or else he's irrelevant, for instance), but if it's what the filmmaker wants, let them be.

You like your Commissioner Gordon to be white? Okay. You've had that, and truth be told, you'll probably have it again. But in the meantime, Wright is a helluva choice. Take it as a win and carry on.

So you don't like Jeffery Wright for some reason. Just say so. Don't dress it up as 'I like a certain look'. Because clearly you are flexible if you like the casting.

Not to mention we haven't actually seen him as Gordon yet. So you are hating without having seen the final product.

Yep this is me with this thread lol. I still stick to my more reasonable let come together and give peace a try hippie statements:yay::D:pcg:. Hope this Gordon gets to do a little action in this movie and maybe fight with Batman like at the end of Arkham Origins:chd:

The assumption that a black character can't come from a line of wealth really says a lot about the implicit biases in both the education system and media representation. That said, I do think Bruce being as privileged as possible is an important aspect of the character.

Gordon, however, is (IMO) supposed to look like a world-weary beat cop with "loveable paternal figure" vibes. And Wright 100% fits that bill.

Totally agree

The only acceptable reason to be against Jeffrey Wright’s casting as Gordon is that we will never get to see him totally kill it as Darkseid.

Curse you, Reeves!

EDIT: By “we”, I really mean “me”. :o

that last part was a jokey joke, hence the “lol”
I’m sure you’re a great guy. It’s a Batman forum. I’m not taking it too seriously. Plus, you brought it may or may not being racist if I’m not mistaken.

You like what you like, but changing Batman's costume to pink footie pajamas is ridiculous. Portraying Gordon as a black man is not ridiculous. It's a change, but framing it as an extreme, transformative change doesn't hold much water.

I may have said this before, but as someone who typically is against race and gender swapping, I really like the Jeffrey Wright casting. The guy is top notch talent-wise and really looks like Gordon, only black. I'm fully on board stopping stuff like the Mar-Vell debacle (at least I thought it was one) but this is nothing like that.

i'm more or less neutral on race swapping for characters.
rage-flipping tables over it is a waste of energy. lol

i think jeffrey wright is perfect for gordon.
.
gary oldman is the definitive live action gordon for me so far, but i think wright is going to be interesting and different enough from oldman's take.

this is one of the castings i am looking most forward too.

Jeffrey Wright with the mustache in that pic totally exudes Gordon energy. I think we'll be more than fine.
