The Force Awakens John Boyega as Finn

While I'm all fine with character development, I also want Black heroic characters to be very useful and effective in a fight and/or have cool powers and/or special weapons. Frankly, I was hoping for all three of the lead characters to have Force powers (which might still turn out to be the case in the next 2 movies).

Here's the thing, while I liked Han (I liked his attitude/personality, which I found to be very funny), I always preferred Luke to Han because Luke had Force powers and a cool Light Saber. Based on what you have said, Finn is basically the Han Solo of this new trilogy, which I'm all fine with as long as he is useful in a fight and/or have a cool weapon or Force powers. Based on what happened to him in this movie, it might be possible that he might receive some bionics, which I would be fine with.

If the reasons why you like these characters hinge upon them having "cool powers and a cool lightsaber," then you're really selling the entire cast short. There is so much more to them than that. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but that strikes me as an all too narrow and arbitrary criteria for picking favorites; you're destined to be disappointed if that's the only thing you'll accept.

As an aside, I think a big part of the reason we're seeing so much outcry and discontent over Phasma, Hux, Finn, and several others is that a lot of folks latched onto these characters and convinced themselves to fall in love with them. We see this a lot with the superhero movies, but the biggest difference is that in those cases, we at least have a point of reference with the comics and related media. We need to keep in mind that these are freshly conceived characters here; our preconceptions and expectations for them were never based on anything concrete or previously established.

Yeah Finn was useful. I dont know what some people are taking about

I feel like the idea that a character can ONLY be cool/interesting/useful if they have Force Powers/a lightsaber is a rather uncreative way of looking at things. Han is probably a more popular character overall than Luke is, and he doesn't have either of those things. Boba Fett is also really popular, and ditto on him.

As a guy who wanted to see Finn be the Luke/Anakin of this trilogy, I was ultimately not disappointed with his role in TFA. He and Rey were very equal, as far as I'm concerned.

Its because those who grew up on the prequels where the vast majority of the leads were the boring Jedi.

Seriously. After watching those movies, I was like, "Yeahhhhh... so why did anyone miss these guys?"

As intriguing as a Poe/Finn match would be Ridley and Boyega did have really good chemistry. I think I might ship them a little.

Hahahaha

Personally, I'm hoping for a Rey/Phasma matchup. It would be great if, in the next episode, Rey pries her out of the tin can suit and falls in love.

Fanfic goes for the same sex relationship 90% of the time.

I do love Rey and Finn, though.

Finn was a fun amusing character and he had a nice arc. I kind of agree that he was too bumbling/jokey though. It seemed like Rey constantly saved the day and Finn didn't bring as much to the table as you'd hope. I also wonder where they're going next with him -- Rey and Poe seem to have much more obvious trajectories as far as the next films are concerned.

I'm actually pretty excited that he's not the Luke/Annakin of the series as it is rather unclear where his story will go from here.

Finn was my favorite element of this new film as he is pretty much the only new idea the film offers. His background as a defected Storm Trooper is very interesting. I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson has in store for him.

For me it was less a matter of Finn being too incompetent and Rey being a litte too hyper-competent at every single thing ever.

I agree. Good chemistry with Rey....but a bit too jokey and I'm glad that was toned down in 2nd half of film.

Lando's bastard son?! :woot:

I kid....

What do you think is Poe's trajectory for the next film?

Rey and Finn were done like the Katniss and Peeta meets Star Wars. That open audition script from 2013 was an indication that would be an influence and it was. It was based on Chapter 19 of the first Hunger Games book.

John Boyega actually retweeted about Peeta in May 2014 while he was filming.

I think it was both. Finn losing to Kylo? Understandable. Losing to no name Stormtrooper #249376? Pointless.

Finn was great and I'm OK that he got the snot beaten out of him a lot. As long as he becomes a better or more useful fighter in the sequels, it should be alright.

Makes complete sense. You don't put your best fighter in sanitation. He was obviously inexperienced, and something of a pacifist. He said that night on Jakku was his first fight. It was also his first time using a lightsaber after being used to a blaster. For all we know that stormtrooper has plenty of experience and took his training better.

It may have helped if they didn't build Finn up as a possible Jedi or at the very least capable with a lightsaber. His most important role was tricking people into thinking Rey wasn't force sensitive in the trailers and that didn't even work.
I felt like he was there for comic relief most of the time and that's not what I wanted from the character that was supposed to be torn between the Order and his conscience.
