The Force Awakens John Boyega as Finn

That's a great idea^
He can't be the only stormtrooper to feel that way.
The way he interacted with that trooper that got shot in the beginning made it seem like it was one of his life long friends or something. And the trooper fanatic that he fought outside maz kanatas watering hole was pretty great too, I loved that.

Is Finn the 1st stormtrooper to "break free"? I thought from the previous films that they were kinda brainwashed or something and were following orders blindly.

Can we assume that Finn/Rey are going to be involved romantically going forward? Considering her and Poe don't even share a scene.

What was eventually revealed between Luke & Leia should stop us all from making such assumptions just yet. The seeds were definitely sown, however. We'll see.

Supposedly, if reports are to be believed, the new major female character that's being cast right now for Episode VIII is being set up as a potential love interest for Finn.

Apparently they had John do chemistry reads with the actresses, now whether that means romantic chemistry or not? We'll see.

They established a very strong bond between Rey and Finn, safe to say at this point, they care more about each other than they do anyone else in the Galaxy.

If it feels organic to the story, the yes, Finn and Rey could be love interests I guess. Seems unlikely at this point though since they're going their separate ways.

I think it's implied that Finn is the first to defect in such a way. The Stormtroopers of the Empire were not brainwashed conscripts like the ones in the First Order. Though they were generally recruited at a young age it wasn't as extreme as what the FO is doing. Hux and Kylo Ren have a conversation early on about the troopers all being programmed from birth and Kylo suggests they'd be better off with a clone army instead (which to my memory is the only prequel reference in the movie).

Dont know why people say Finn will be like the new Han.

Because there is something called character arcs .

In the OT, a dude named Luke went from being a farmboy to a Jedi badass within the span of three films.

Who's to say something like that can't or won't happen with Finn?

In general people treating the first part of a trilogy as the whole story is odd.

Thank you:up:

Well, duh. Obviously Finn is going to grow as a character during the trilogy.

That wasnt my point though. My point is that Finn isnt anything like Han in the sense that he's this sarcastic rogue space cowboy that piloted a cool ship.

Right now he doesnt really have much of an identity outside of being an ex storm trooper who defects. And thats far and away from who Han was. Like you said, Finn is going to get his chance to grow throughout the series but I doubt he'll be the next Han Solo.

I mean even though theyre going their separate ways I'm sure they'll meet up again for the main story of Episode VIII.

On another note: I wouldnt mind a love story. I actually like love stories in movies if theyre done well. Finn and Rey had chemistry. As long as there is no love triangle. I'm cool with it.

I fully expect there to be some sort of love story somewhere in this new trilogy. Star Wars has always had a love story and 9/10 modern blockbusters have some romance story in there too.

Finn and Rey obviously cared about each other a lot. If there is any romance between the characters in the sequels then it would feel pretty natural.

Gugu Mbatha Raw is rumoured to have been cast in the next movie.

Rey waited her whole life on Jakku for someone to come back for her, no one ever came, but Finn did, putting his life on the line in the process..

Finn wanted to get away from the First Order more than anything else, nothing in the galaxy could convince him to go fight them, but when it came to Rey needing help, he never hesitated.

Finn is Force Sensitive. Rey is the Consular (green lightsaber). Strong in the Force and all that. But Finn has a Force Bond with Rey. That's established when they escape on the Millennium Falcon and she flies the ship and he uses the turrets.

The question is whether or not he's going to be trained and by who (Luke or Rey?). I'm hoping he'll be a Guardian (blue lightsaber) and be fighting with the resistance on the front lines.

And kind of related I'm hoping Rey builds a double-bladed light saber like Bastilla and Satele Shan.

That shortlist was for 2 separate roles right? I feel like I read that somewhere

Because in terms of love interest I feel like Olivia Cooke from Bates Motel is the only one that fits.

And I think Raw isn't doing the movie. According to this, which is a shame

I'm of this thinking too.

I've seen a lot of people saying he's not Force Sensitive and I really dont agree with that

A lot of Finn love on here...I actually thought he was one of the weaker aspects of a very strong film. Yet, despite that, he's not hopeless or anything...i actually think he had a few solid moments as well...and i expect more out of him in the future.

Some of this stemmed from the writing, things folks have mentioned already about his competence as a fighter after being a ST raised from birth to fight, even though he may have been "sanitation" that's some lofty training.

Let me also add how odd it is, a "sanitation" ST would be on an elite raid , consisting of only a few dozen STs important enough to have Kylo within their ranks. (On his first mission no less...does not seem super legit)

The "boo Ya" moments he delivered seemed strange and awkward. Man, hard as it seems they were almost racist.

I think his status as a "Jedi type" seems a bit forced and, especially, unneeded so soon. Should have let him be a bit more competent and tougher...the seasoned soldier type. WOuld have made more sense to the plot...i mean through most of the movie he acted like this huge fish out of water when he must have literally spent 20 years training and under the gun...not sound writing.

Seriously though...minor complaints. He had some really sound moments as well. I like Finn and hope to see more from him.

This movie was freakin very solid.

I kinda hope he isn't. In retrospect, one of the things that bored me about TPT is that the big guns were almost exclusively Jedi and Sith, or Queens and Senators. No room for the Hans of the galaxy.

I think, Boyega did amazing job as an actor. Even Ford and Ridley had sort of awkward little moments that felt off a bit. Isaac and Driver had a few slips. But Boyega felt 100% genuine in the movie. I liked him a lot. IMO, he gave the most stable performance.

What makes you think that he is?

Let me preface this by saying, I'm not an all knowing source on the deeper things of Star Wars.

But to me idk it just came off to me that he has the potential to be a Jedi. Not as much as Rey, Luke, or Anakin. I just think it is weird that they made him get into the most lightsaber battles in the movie AND be pretty decent for picking the thing up for the first time to not have SOME potential to be a Jedi or Sith. Ive always been of the thinking that, not everyone can just pick up a lightsaber and do their thing.

That's flimsy reasoning but that's just how I see it.

It wont make or break the series if he is, but I think it would be great if he was on.
Im the opposite of you, one of the things I liked or even loved about the prequels is that there were so many Jedi, Sith, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I liked seeing so many of them, but I missed the scoundrels and everymen.

I like Finn more than I thought I would, Impressed by the actor's performance and the character but I think I like Poe better and think People will just get better.

I mean they all provably will but in this film I have to rate the new characters as Rey,People and then Finn
