The Last Jedi John Boyega as Finn (VIII)

He was really using them (the Resistance) to get to Rey in TFA. And now Rey's gone again.

I hope they're not trying to set Rey and Finn up as a couple, because I just can't see it happen. I'd rather have Rey takes over Luke's mantle and just go hermit for the rest of her life as a Jedi than just a love interest of somebody.

I'm not sure I want a new Jedi order to be hermits. After all, it was a pretty big factor in Anakin's fall that he felt no one trusted him and he couldn't actually express himself. Especially since Luke went against that mindset in VI to save him.

I'm not speaking in defense of Finn and Rey being a thing, because I don't ship any Star Wars until I'm absolutely sure they're not related, but I think it makes more sense for a new Jedi Order to be much more open and compassionate.

Though, if we get new details on how Ben fall, maybe that will change.

I probably wouldn't worry about it. Rey's story is more pressing so obviously it got highlighted first.

Yeah I get that, and I want to see where Roy's story goes as well as I liked her character a lot also. I was just going for a bit more Finn in the teaser. And just hope his short appearance there isn't indicative of his role in the movie.

With this new Rose being apparently a big addition and her being a fan of Finn, it's pretty likely he'll have a good role.

Besides, a lot of the general public seemed to warm up to Finn. I'd be surprised if he got shafted.

John Boyega: “Well, it’s like imagine you work at McDonald’s. You push your manager into a chute compactor and then a year later you decide to go back dressed as one of the colleagues. It’s not the best situation. There’s a lot of chasing, there’s a mission that needs to be completed but that isn’t necessarily something that doesn’t come without a fight and it’s something that he’s gonna have to face for himself.” “But it was fun for me. I always wanted to go undercover. Star Wars undercover is different because you wear a hat and all of a sudden no one recognizes you. … I’d be thinking to myself walking in one of those scenes, isn’t anyone gonna go, ‘Wait, isn’t that Finn?’ Do you know what I mean? But such is the magic of Star Wars. It’s fun. It’s fun to do. It’s cool.” (August 1, 2017)

John Boyega: “Being a different person comes with a different energy, a different perspective, and Rian definitely has his own unique style. Rian [Johnson] is just fun. Rian is just a fun guy. I have a feeling he is Santa Claus. I think Santa Claus is a part time director when it comes to December. He grows out the beard then does his thing, because he just so giving, he’s cheerful on set, and it’s always a fun time.” “What people fail to understand sometimes is that the success of these stories that will stay with us long-term is to bring new ideas, is to expand the universe. So we can have new stories, new people, just a different perspective is awesome. [Rian] had a chance to really go crazy, and I’m a big Star Wars buff so certain things I saw I was just like ‘Well, that’s a first.’ And that, for me, is really cool to experience.” “The second one was like coming home in a strange way going through a weird déjà vu, but this time you’re more comfortable. You’re settled in your character and you’re ready to go, but it was definitely different because now you’re known as Finn and there’s Rey and you’re just part of the culture in a strange way.” “During the auditions I found that my niche for this character was definitely in the more humor and fear. So he just represents us in the film — just finally having a Star Wars character that goes, ‘This is really dangerous.’ Finn is a part of myself, just magnified a tad. And it was fun to do that. It was just hilarious because while Rey is handling all the stress of life, I get to just run around and do all the cool stuff and say all the cool lines and have fun.” “I have to say, I hate [Rian’s] playlist on his iPhone. He has the country version to every great hip-hop song ever made and I don’t understand where he got that from. It’s treachery. It’s blasphemous. Apart from that, he’s amazing.” (August 3, 2017)

John Boyega: “What was The Force Awakens – a billion dollars in 12 days? How many people did it take to make a billion dollars in 12 days? Jesus Christ.” [BRISTLES] “Trust me…no [it wasn’t just me responsible for that]! [LAUGHS] Yeah [The Force Awakens was a fluid production.]” [NODS] “Mmmm-hmmm [The script was changing and characters were changing]. Yeah [there were some major changes in production].” “That’s what great about the opportunity J. J. [Abrams] gave me with Star Wars is that Finn is not necessarily your average leading man – there’s a quirk and a tone to him even that just makes him a different kind of leading man – and that’s what I’m about. I like exploring the different intricate things about humanity that may not be the main story or the main event. That’s what I’m about.” “I don’t know [when I’ll get to see The Last Jedi]. I have no idea…I’m telling you like we are so in your [audience] shoes at this point. And that’s what so different working on a number of projects where you are involved and this is like… which is cool, you get to be part of the audience, you get to be surprised.” “I think as all fans we wanna just know where everybody fits in now. We just want to know, ‘okay, who’s the Jedi? Who’s the-‘ We know Rey’s the Jedi. ‘Who’s the gunslinger?’ We just want specific…yeah, we just want all the answers. Who are the parents? Second names? Everything.” (August 5, 2017)

John Boyega: “The Resistance isn’t in the best condition. Things are shaky.” “[The Last Jedi]’s a chance for each character to decide what side they’re on and decide what they’re fighting for. It’s an epic dark story. At the same time it’s still fun. It’s still ‘Star Wars.’” (August 8, 2017)

John Boyega: “It got really real for [Finn]. And he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,] but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He’s trying to do that at first.” “Everyone in the space, throughout the galaxy, would have heard about the young Jedi who discovered her powers and defeated Kylo Ren and the young former Stormtrooper who helped save the day. He’s a hero to people like Rose, who fight for the Resistance because their homes have been destroyed by the First Order.” “He appreciates the adoration for a second, but when he meets her, Finn is trying to escape the whole war. He’s trying to leave. And she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn’t necessarily true.” “It’s now an opportunity for him to be the best he can be. He has to make a decision, and Rose is there to help him make that choice.” (August 9, 2017)

John Boyega: “In Episode VIII, Finn and Rey are separated. They’re not together the way they were in VII, so there isn’t much between them. Episode VIII was about establishing a new relationship with Rose, played by Kelly Marie Tran. And the continuing relationship with Poe as well. So that was more my fixation when Rey’s off in the mountains with Luke.” “I didn’t know [the reshoots for The Force Awakens were for more banter and less antagonism between Finn and Rey!]” “Finn and Rey’s relationship is almost a reflection of myself and Daisy’s relationship, even in terms of our dynamic. I think Daisy in real life is a bit more laid back.” (August 9, 2017)

Calling it, ^ that's Finn in the one stumbling all over, while the squadron pilots got theirs locked into perfect height to kick up the dust, it's Finn's first time getting his wings on!:woot:
He'll be like: Why did I get the broken one? :oldrazz:

Sending her down the trash compacter was funny, but this fight needed to happen legit!
There may be a bigger plan for him infiltrating into the belly of the beast, but for Finn it really comes down to this.
Finn reflected in the helmet helmet he rebelled against is great.

Glad to see he is seemingly getting his own arc, thought he was great in the first.

Here's a question that is puzzling to me...who exactly is the "Force" that wakens? Is it really as simple as it being Rey? Because it seems quite convenient Finn awoke from his "Stormtrooper State of Being" the moment the Force Awakens. Could he be Force sensitive, from unknowable reasons, like Anakin's origin of existence?

Finn had a pretty fun storyline, but didn't like the Rose character he was paired off with.

Finn is beginning to seem a bit of a pointless character to me. :csad: They really didn't give him a good storyline here.
They did set up a great possible death scene for him but then ruined that too in cringeworthy style.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I'll see what I think on rewatch but I was bored out of my brain during it and it felt like a huge waste of time.

Gonna have to agree with John Campea on this one. Not a fan of Finn's storyline and found Boyega to be kind of grating in this film.

Yeah I thought my man Finn was kinda "eh" this movie.
Not bad I just wish he had a better arc.

I think they could've done more with him being seen as this "hero" to so many and how he deals with that. That could've been something

I feel Finn's subplot of the film, and various aspects of the Resistance story as a whole, are the only parts of the film that I think can objectively argued as badly plotted.

Luke, Rey, and Ren may have story concepts that a viewer can disagree with, but are executed very well. But Finn's stuck in a plot cul-de-sac where he doesn't accomplish anything, doesn't really undergo any growth as a character (especially in comparison to TFA), is largely meandering around for a while, and then his accidental recruitment of DJ wound up off screen spoiling Leia's plan and getting everyone killed. He gets to kill Phasma, but she's still so underdeveloped that the victory feels redundant and kind of meaningless, and vaguely parodic considering BB-8's doing more damage at the moment.

And the fact of the matter is that the impetus for that plot and it's issues are all rooted in Admiral Holdo not properly briefing anyone on Leia's plan. There's not even a perfunctory use of spies or moles to explain why she can't say "we're headed to sanctuary." And the constant cutting back to the Raddus in space just makes it more awkward, since that plot element depends on the Resistance having enough acceleration to get out of effective range but not enough to do something clever like pre-emptively ram a ship you know you're going to lose into the FO Fleet, and since the FO apparently doesn't have a single support craft capable of escorting fighters outside of the Star Destroyers.

There's thematic parallels with Finn and Rose's mission failing, but yeah, I really hope Abrams comes up with something better for Finn in IX. The plotline here does a disservice to the character(s).

Finn got no shine here at all. Him and Poe got such weak story lines which is sad considering how much I like both characters.

Finn is a good character that's consistently not used very well.

Yeah both characters were wasted here. Poe was just there for exposition and filler while Finn and Rose were on their unnecessary mission.

It really boggles my mind how film makers get to write and direct a movie in the effing star wars universe with these amazing characters and yet...they make some plot lines boring...? Surely Star Wars should be the easiest (well...least hard..) type of franchise to create a compelling story.
