John Carter : A Princess of Mars - Part 2

I think they did a good job with the age old exposition problem with Sci Fi of this sort. They explained who everyone one was, what the situation is and so forth pretty well all things considering.

Anybody else who thought this scene was badass/emotional? That was my favorite moment from the film.

Oh yeah!

I saw this Saturday night and enjoyed the hell out of it. Real shame it's not doing so hot at the box office. Maybe word of mouth will help it out.

Am I the only one who thought of Helen Mirren while watching her performance? Not only is she as beautiful, but she has the same strong stage presence. She just commands the scene every time she's on.

She definitely had a strong presence. Her personality is much different in interviews. Here she responds to the idea of being cast as Wonder Woman:

The jumping needed consistency for all we know he could have leaped home and it would have been fine.

That sounds like something you'd see in a "How it should have ended" short. I think it was established somewhat. He really didn't know his limitations but when he lept to Dejah's temple he missed the mark and had to grab onto the ledge.

It was badass but really somber. I thought they pulled that off nicely.

Awesome image, still looking forward to seeing this.

I think you'll really enjoy it

I thought it was a great fun movie. I'm kinda surprised it's not doing better, but I've certainly seen alot worse than this movie. A solid 8/10.

Saw the movie and enjoyed it. When James Purefoy had a sword I was hoping he would go Solomon Kane or Iron Clad and start chopping dudes in half :woot:

Taylor Hitch did a good job as a leading man. Lynn Collins was hot and her accent was good.

This is Ciran Hinds 3rd big movie of the year so far having been in Ghost Rider: SV and The Women In Black As Well.

Some critics were saying Dominic West was hammy but I didn't theink so. He was fine and nowhere near his performance in Punisher WarZone.

Mark Strong was solid as always.

As others have said Disney really should of hit hard that John Carter inspired all the other Sci Fi movies over the years with the marketing campaign. Also dropping the 'Of Mars' from the title was stupid.

I agree. Alot the time its not even that the movies are aimed at kids its that treat the whole audiences like they are idiots.

Nearly the entire cast of Rome was in this. Made me happy.

Saying this story inspired Star Wars or Avatar means nothing to audiences.

It would be like saying Fantastic Four was the movie that inspired The Incredibles.

Your right. No one reads or knows much of anything anymore. Everyone SHOULD know about the John Carter novels, at least their place in literary history.

That would require reading books though, which most are allergic to now.

maybe if they add some more money to promote the movie in march ? maybe realese a new trailer that makes it clear that this is a fun adventure movie? maybe they could get more scifi fans?

Part of the problem it seems is that Star Wars, Star Trek and Avatar have looted the novels for ideas that it looks like it ripped off or is just a lazy action sci-fi film.

Disney will probably try to spin it by claiming that it's doing well in the international box office, but truthfully grossing only 30 mil in its first week in the U.S. is a huge disappointment, especially considering the budget to be around 250 mil or so. Right now I'm not sure if they will greenlight a sequel, and I think this will be mentioned in the same breathe as SR and GL, two other 200 mil underperformers.

Yeah this film would have to at best break even, so $600 million WW and then have a better script and different director for even the thought of a sequel. There is a new regime at Disney, they didn't make this film, so with it bombing they won't even entertain the idea.

I saw this movie last night. It was really amazing. At first, the new world and the strange names and culture might be a little overwhelming and sort of odd. But the characters are so likeable, and the story is so great, that you'll get over it and have a great time. I seriously hope it gets a sequel. Why does crap like transformers 3 make over a billion and a great movie like this not even have an amazing OW?

John Carter is an obscure character that appeared in a book a 100 years ago and was never popular. Whereas Transformers was popular with cartoon shows, animated movies, comic books, toys, video games, merchandise etc. for the last 25 years. The first Transfomers trailer got the people who go to movies (boys, teenagers, young men who grew up with them in the 80s) excited about the film. There's an audience out there that loves that stuff.

Every time Disney tried a trailer it did more harm than good, it didn't create the excitment needed for a $70 million opening. If they were serious about this they should've taken their time, reintroduced the character with a TV series for kids. That's what Disney does well, at least that brings awareness of the character that hasn't reached the masses in the last 30 years. Everyone has heard of Tarzan and Disney did great with that, one theatrical film, 2 direct to DVD films and an animated series that did 39 episodes.

Maybe in the future they were planning a JCM animated show but there isn't even a video game for this either right? Imagine last fall there was a JCM animated series that launched and the film came out in the summer like originally intended? They could've found better results.

This was just a perfect storm of a director given total control when he had no experience with live action, the source material inspired other sci-fi films so what you can show in a trailer seems familiar but not in a good way, the director fought with the marketing department, the marketing was bungled and the film was essentially taking a character no one had heard of. Too many strikes against it for it to succeed.

.
but avatar is 100% cliche. and it made so much money. i thought that the the general public likes a predictable story?

i dont think this is the problem.

Still on the fence. Is it worth seeing in the theater? Do the visuals warrant it?

I did....until they intercut it with him burying his family. Totally took me out of the action and I couldn't make out what was happening in battle. The juxtaposition just didnt work for me.

My biggest problem with this movie was the Therns. No cause, no motivation other than they like to mess with the Martian society. They sent John back to Earth so easily that when the movie ended and we think he's being re-united with his wife, I kept thinking "Dude, they're just going to send you back."

I think the therns are in the books but I know they weren't as powerful as they were in the moive. It's been three years since I've read the series.

If you got blu-ray, I'd say wait.

you get good visuals IMO. its like the trailer. CGI is very good.

i think you should watch it. its John Carter on the big screen.

It's well worth the price of admission. :)

i thought he said they travelled to worlds and facilitated their destruction...
Obligatory The Dark Knight reference: Some people just want to watch the world burn

i dont think this is the problem.

But there was no wow factor.

Avatar is just another example of how this story has been done before but JC didn't look better than Avatar. Avatar's trailer got people to go see the movie, it used James Cameron's name in the marketing, etc.

Stanton didn't want his name involved at all, and it is hard to say how from the director of WALL-E and Finding Nemo would've affected the film.

With Inception, it wasn't based off anything but Warner Bros. did a great job marketing it, they used Christopher Nolan's name, had recognizable stars, the trailers made you want to see the film and the critics enjoyed it.

I didn't like Avatar at all and hope to enjoy John Carter. Disney can say before Star Wars, before Avatar there was JC but it has to look better or on the same level of those films. Lineup the trailer and marketing of JC versus the 6 Star Wars films and Avatar and JC will come out at the bottom.

And how they are some of the most entertaining books in science fiction history.

But yea, I had so many people in the theatre saying how they ripped stuff from Star Wars....any time I heard that I was like :barf:

Such a disrespect to E.R.B. :cmad:

there were only a few people who chuckled at the in jokes...having the nephew be the writer...

Books? What are those?

I liked when the one alien smacked John upside the head
when they found out the wedding was at the OTHER city
:woot:

Exactly! There's also the fact that teens today are afraid to even look or read anything older than 20 years old. Which is why they are remaking movies and TV shows from the 80's already.
