Joker's OTF Switchblade

I'm not going to argue against the possibility that the prop knife was made by a particular company, but for all intents and purposes there is nothing to suggest that the lower quality OTF knife isn't an exact replica of the one seen in the film. All the promo shots and screenshots (most of which are in the picture thread) show that the discussed knife has all of the features of the prop. They are the same size, have the same markings, and the blade is dulled. Furthermore, the Hot Toys Joker figure comes with the knife as an accessory. The designs of these are usually based on references provided by the studio.

I'm interested in seeing what jigsawklr has found, but as of now there's nothing to suggest that this knife isn't exactly the same as what was seen in the film.

I don't know what knife "jigsawklr" thinks he has found, or what information he thinks he has recieved, but he is absolutely and totally wrong in saying that the knife used in the film isn't one of the clones. It absolutely is. Sorry.

It's the one from the Bladeplay site, that have now sold out... I have seen "The Dark Knight" 4 times now, 1 time in IMAX, and everytime the scene somes up where The Joker is holding the knife fo Rachel's face, and he tells his story, there are money shots galore of the knife, and I have taken my attention completely away from the scene and just watched and inspected every angle of the knife...

1. The knife is absolutely without question black... Where this purple thing is coming from, I have no idea. You obviously have not seen, or not payed close attention to the movie...

2. You can tell which knife it is, simple from some of the promotional shots taken of Heath as the Joker for toy and merchandising designs, as seen here:

^^^That knife, if you just look at it there, or save the image and magnify sevel times, is clearly black... And clearly the clone that Bladeplay, and several other places were selling. That knife is also, without a doubt the one The Joker uses in the film. As I said, I have examined it very closely every time I have seen the film. There is absolutely no doubt or question in my mind on this matter.

So to Jig, if you are a collector of knifes, and are just looking for another cool knife to add to your collection, that's cool... But if you are looking for the knife the Joker uses in the film, you are wasting your money on whatever this one you are buying is. You got some bum info. Sorry...

The knife in the film, is the Bladeplay clone.

I'm completely with you man i mean L@@K proof is in the promo pics of heath

I believe the Joker had more than 1 knife.

Gordon said he had "nothing but KNIVES and lint" in his pockets.

So, I guess that means more than 1 type of knife?

Knife=single, ie: one

KNIVES=plural, ie: MORE than one

Just my 2 cents :)

We know that. This is the main one he uses in the film. There is another one he uses, but most discussions have been centered around this one.

The only other one he actually uses, is a Mircotech Troodon. That's what he uses to hack up Gambol's face. It's a very expensive knife.

If anyone is interested, I still have 3 of the Cupid 3.0 OTF's available. Just sold one.

The knife in the film, is the Bladeplay clone.

The actual knife in the film is in fact a very deep shade of purple. The manufacturer has repeatedly said that it was deep purple. It is a very expensive knife. I also know for certain that three of his other knives from the scene are as follows:

Microtech Troodon (Purple) (used in the scene where he holds it up to Michael Jai White's character's face)

Microtech H.A.L.O

Microtech Makora

Those three knives are in the film, used by the Joker and others. He also has a common potato/carrot peeler (which is the last "knife" they lay down in the knives and lint scene).

The knife in the Rachel scene and the promo shots is not a clone. And it is not black. It is very, very deep purple, magnify it all you want. It also is not a Dalton or a Paragon. The clone that can be purchased is the most accurate replica you will find, but it is not the exact knife. Like I said, I have been in discussion with the manufacturer. Their design, definitely, is a rip off of Rob Dalton's Cupid(no one can deny that), it's the most ripped off knife there is in the automatic world, but it is still made by a very quality company and is not cheap.

Oh, and for proof of the Microtech's that I said were in the movie above, here is a letter from the manufacturer:

My original question to them:
Hello,
I own a few of your knives currently, and am very satisfied with them. I
now have a question for you. In the new Dark Knight movie, Heath Ledger's
portrayal of the Joker, in the scene in which he holds the knife up to Michael Jai White's character's face, he used an assisted knife that resembles closely a Microtech design, and looks to be one of the Microtech persuasion. I believe it is a Troodon, but the appearance is brief, so I wasn't positive. Could you confirm or deny whether my assumptions are correct and whether or not there are any available for purchase through your site?

Regards,
XXXXXX

Their response:

Hello:

You are quite correct. The knife carried by the Joker is the Troodon; which was fabricated at that time in the color of purple. There were also The H.A.L.O. and the Makora which were used by others in the movie as well. Our knives have appeared in several movies and television series. You may have noticed them is the Series 24 or Rush Hour 3 also.

As to your question of availability; the Troodon is publicly available. We will have them in production again most likely this Fall. Colored Troodons, however, may not be available at that time. I have mentioned to Mr. Marfione the response the Jokers knife has had on the public and the requests for it. The Troodon was also available in Red, Blue and Green. By making calls amongst the dealers listed on our website below, you may be able to locate one for sale.

Thank you for your interest in our products. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me again.

Like I said, I'm not trying to give out false information. For those that are going for the look, the clone is spot on. It looks just like the knife he uses that gets the focus. It is not the exact knife, true, but it's close enough that one wouldn't be able to tell the difference. My thing is, I don't but cheap knives. I haven't since I started collecting them. The one that I get will be identical except for the dulled blade, to the one that he carries. I am not buying it just so I can say "Hey, I have the exact knife the Joker carries in the Dark Knight, and my costume is closer than anything anyone else has." I'm buying a quality knife because of the fact that I am a knife collector and I can resell it later and get value out of it, should I decide to sell it. Just last week, I purchased two Spyderco's, both of which weren't cheap, but they're rare. I sent them with a friend to a show and he sold them for $150 more per knife than I paid for them.

If you want the clone and will be using it for costume purposes only, then by all means, get it. It will serve the purpose that you're wanting. It looks just like it. I can't blame you for doing that because it's cheaper and it's a prop for a costume. I won't have one because I won't like the knife because I like to play with the knifes I own and sharpen the knives I own to razor edges. The cheaper metal in the blade won't hold the edge I will want on them, and the blade action will be too sloppy for my liking. To each their own.

Now, my question, for those that are also making costumes. What does the undercoat look like that can be barely seen in the above promo shot? Is it the jacket he wears at the beginning for the bank robbery scene, or is it a suit coat that he wears under the overcoat?

I never said I didn't believe you. Im very open to the idea of there being a quality knife used as a "hero". I'd still like to know what it is. If it's as expensive and rare as you make it out to be, there shouldn't be any harm in disclosing your findings.

And that's good to know about the mircotechs. I knew about the troodon, just didn't know the color of the handle. And I know I saw a few more on the evidence table.

To answer your questions about the suit, to my knowledge, the undercoat is a slate grey, 3 button blazer. I believe it has a red-orange silk lining. The bank robbery suit coat is a charcol grey, 2 button one with a darker (perhaps purple) liner.

Look, all that is very nice and good. But in the end, it all comes down to this:

That knife is Black... I'm sorry, you can call it Deep Deep Purple if you want, or say it is not the clone... But I have examined it from every angle, and every detail... As well as when I have seen the film multiple times(But that doesn't matter as to this picture alone)

In this picture, the knife that he is holding is Black. There is no question, nor debate about this. I don't know what somebody at a Knife company told you, or anything or anybody else. I deal in logic, and facts... What I can see, I can prove more than what I can be told or hear. And in this picture, I can see a Black Knife(no question that it is black), and I can see that it matches the Clone perfectly in every way...

Also, for a knife, in such an huge film(The 2nd biggest ever), with such an iconic character, for the exact model not to be known yet, and you are just breaking this to us, is kind of ridiculous. There were many many people looking for this exact knife, for months... And all the sudden, here comes someone telling us that they know what the real knife is, and not only that, but it's Purple, not Black... lol... When it's clear as day to see otherwise not only in these pics, but in the film.

I'm sorry man, and I appreciate how detailed and upfront you have been on every aspect of this, but you are being sold brother... Whatever this place is telling you, it's incorrect. The knife is black, and it is the clone... Just trust your eyes... They were given to us all for a reason.

If anyone is interested, I still have 3 of the Cupid 3.0 OTF's available. Just sold one.

yep. I just bought one from this guy:) $20. Not bad!

Thanks again Frontier.
Like I said in my e-mail, according to you it should be here by this weekend (Aug. 30th) I hope :)
If anyone wants pics, I'll put them up when it arrives.
I really don't care how "screen accurate" mine is, as long as it looks cool w/ my Joker Halloween costume (which I'll be getting in 2 weeks)

And......why so serious?

It's just one knife of many the Joker used.

The troodon is an MT 120-11 in satin finish. The only ones I've seen at the moment have a black handle, but I believe you can order then in different colors. You never actually see the handle in the movie, just the blade. It'll set you back about $350 more or less.

As for the main knife, there was speculation for a time, that is was a smith & wesson model. That is, until somebody found the clone knife. Now, its very possible that there is a big name high quality knife used as a "hero" in the film and that the clones are used as "stunt" knives. I've seen this in many films before and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that was the case here as well.
The production clearly wasn't against using expensive knives so there is a possibility.

I'd REALLY like to see what jigsaw has found.

I tend to agree with this, because I've cruised some of the knife forums, and most of the 'knive people' on there after examining the film and pictures have come to the same conclusion it is the clone. The only other option thrown around much is the Paragon ATKO 10...but it always comes back to being a match for the cheap clone.

Thanks. May be one of these days I'll save up my pennies for one of those, but damn, that's expensive for a knife!

I really hope jigsaw shares what he has found too, because I am curious as to what other manufacturer makes the main knife. I'm just surprised no one else has discovered it yet.

This is one of the best pics I can find of the Troodon (except the blade isn't serrated)

Here is the Troodon in black on black (it's clearer so you can see the design better. Imagine the body purple and the blade satin silver)

(There are several models and colors)

Microtech pulled it off of their site because they don't have any more in stock. The purple is the hardest color to find. (I've been trying to find one since before this movie came out for my GF. I found a better pic the other day of the non-serrated version that a lady had (she actually had two purple Troodons, but they weren't for sale).

And the Paragon knife is a cheaper version of the Dalton Cupid, the original knife that bred all of the offshoots. Paragon copied Rob Dalton's design. The hero knife isn't a Dalton, Rob has even said so himself.

The Troodon in the film is a single edge as well as serrated. It's what he used to slice up Gambol's face. I studied that scene at the IMAX and looked at a lot of sites to ID that knife. Aside from the color of the handle, I'm extremely confident in my findings.

I'd still like to know about the hero knife. :cwink:

See, I was looking at the handle. The Troodon has a lot of blade variations but one handle. The purple color is the color, just didn't look at the blade too closely. I still haven't been able to get an Imax ticket either, the two theaters near me have been staying sold out.

Not knocking Microtech or their products (I'd own several if I could afford them), but if you guys are looking for something a little less movie accurate but more practical (and legal to carry, in most places), I wholeheartedly suggest the Kershaw Tactical Blur. I've been carrying mine every day since I got it, and I've scared a few people (accidentally) just by opening it. It opens very fast, and satisfyingly loud!

Yeah, like i said before i got the Cupid 3 too. It's very nice. that dellsmart.com had em for 24.99 with free shipping. Not sure if they still got em tho. When i have the money i'll get the exact model Joker had, but this one is very nice. I didn't want one JUST because of the joker either, i wanted it because it's a sweet looking blade. It's almost as intimidating as the 8 inch strangely curved blade i have with 1 inch razor sharp spikes running up the hilt. lol ;)

Not to get off-topic, but that Kershaw Hawk E.T. Pocket Knife looks awesome too

Fortunatly for me, OTF Auto's are legal where I live. So I can have the whole collection if I could afford it. :woot:
I found the right Troodon blade style, but the handle is black. I'll probably have get that one as I would imagine a purple one would be much more costly, with it being so rare.
