Well, here's Dredd's early Carlos Ezquerra illustration:

...."big helmet" also.

This is what John Wagner said about the film's suit via Facebook:

"We shouldn't nitpick, that's a lot closer to the uniform than I thought they'd go (agree there's too much stubble, though). Big yays to DNA. I'm happy."

I think Sly's spaudlers are awesome tho... and in regards to the new pic release, thats the only thing i'm dissapointed they're not having.

Yeah, but they weren't so over the top in the early days of Dredd (like you can see from rogue_trooper's pic, which is actually from the first Dredd story). I don't know exactly at which point they got so big. Somewhere in the 80s.

So it's sort of more faithful to have them appear smaller (in the first Dredd movie, maybe they get bigger in the sequels :awesome:).

IMO the helmet looks fine. The rest.... I like it but where's the chain for the badge? Where's the football like shoulder pad? Where's the eagle shoulder pad?

I thought they said they was going to "Do this right this time". Say what you want about the Stallone movie but at least they got the shoulder pads and badge right.

Don't get me wrong, I like what I see but it's not what they said it would be... At least not yet. How much you wanna bet that this is just Dredd 1.0 and there is another costume that's closer to the comics later in the movie?

The shoulder pads were obviously modified to give a more sense of practicality in terms of movement. We can't make out the eagle shoulder emblem since he's turned to the other angle, but the left one does resemble the subtle pad that Ezquerra and McMahon used to draw in the early comics.

"Do it right this time" is a relative term, ofcourse. I'm pretty sure they reffred, most importantly, to capturing the spirit of the comic. Another thing the producers also stated was that they wanted Dredd to "feel real". That's what I see in the Urban still.

In short, if you put both the Stallone and Urban stills together, you will see quite a substancial difference. The Stallone-Dredd looks like he belongs on Lucas' Star Wars or the 76' Logan's Run, while the Urban-Dredd belongs in a Paul Verhoven's Total Recall or Blade Runner

I like the new look, it has a more military look to it and though it may not be exactly like the comics it definitely got the Dredd feeling since it got the basic scope of the costume right.

I cant tell from that pic, are the gloves atleast green?

Don't know, but at the most they would be a very vague/opaque green, if anything. I can't see very bright colors working for Dredd on celluloid.

I wouldnt want very bright colors, but at lest so they break up the black. The red and gold on the helmet and the gold on the spaulders does do that but imo not enough. the green in the comics did that nicely and contributed alot of the uniforms overall look.

I think the helmet does look oversized, but it's an upperbody shot so we can't get a good feel for the entire costume yet.

Regarding the size of the helmet, in a real world scenario, it is realistic. The snug looking helmets of a lot of the comics often don't allow for the brow of the judge's head. You'd think it were the shape of the helmet.

I do hope we'll get a pic of Thirlby as Judge Anderson soon.

looks like a kid in cosplay...
that helmet just doesnt fit on his puny head lol... though it does make more sense in the real world(but its a movie.. better to look cool than be laughed at)

i hate karl urban anyways he's a terrible actor.
he was cringe-worthy bad in the recent RED movie and HORRIBLE when he played the lead in Pathfinder and Doom(which were both ****** films too)

not to mention the mediocre/lame director attatched this is sure to be a stinker

...

But apart from that, you like it, right?

So I just download the script. I haven't read it but I will later this week.

Now, I know it's an earlier draft, but I have to admit that after reading some of positive reviews, I'm still questioning why Garland (the writer) didn't use more characters from the comic? Isn't it weird that the previoius (and potentially inferior) Stallone film used a lot of the characters from the comics (even the ABC robot from another 2000 AD series), and this didn't? Even despite the fact that this new version is more in line with the tone of the comics?

For example, in the script there's the 'Chief Judge' who is just a generic judge character; couldn't she be based on someone?
