Judge Dredd Reboot!!

I dont mind it to be honest. There are scenes that are good in that they are the closest we had to true 2000AD celluloid thus far and I enjoy the look of the movie (thought they get the asthetic down pretty good), the ABC warrior and Mean Angel were fun, Dyane Lane was fit as all hell as Hershey, Max Von Sydow was good as always and if you check your brain in for the most part, it's mostly an enjoyable romp.

There are obviously bad scenes too.

For me, they mostly feature Rob Scheinder and Armand 'over-actor with wild eyes' Assante who leaves me eternally asking why, oh, why did Stallone not just double up as Rico, given that Rico and Dredd are bloody clones and are supposed to look identical? With a bit of a script re-working and some carefully blocked shots, we wouldnt have had to see Dredd's face in full view as the studio wouldve been happy with Stallone's face on view as Rico. All the movies problems basically stem from the fact that they show Dredd's face about 15 minutes into the movie and this has an effect on the plot from there on in; the movie as a result goes from something with promise to [at times] generic science fiction future city movie number #1254.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the movie perfectly, especially the part about Diane Lane :woot:.

But yeah, I think at the time, and I believe Sly has admitted this himself, but his ego got a bit too much on the movie.

This is what conceptual designer Michael Van Kesteren says about what these pictures show:

"Well..

Budget, guys.. That's all I can say.. And they're right hand drive..

I can't be certain, but I'm quite sure the VFX lads will be doing some groovy stuff..

Funnily enough, I asked the guys working on the ambulance if I could have a softserve with a flake.. It didn't get the laughs I was really hoping for.. "

^Yeah, they really seem to be going for a more "not-too-distant" possible future ala "Escape From New York" and "RoboCop", as oppossed to the more "fantastical" feel of the original film. The Nolan-Batman "realistic" vibe is also present here, imo, which is quite appropriate.

^Yep, most definately. Vastly. I'm sure that there will be flying h-wagons and sort, but they will be done in a careful manner, I think.

These new pics aren't really helping, where is the right dose of intelligence and creativity? Too many uninspiring and lame decisions have been made imo. :down

I'm about the look/design of the Mega-city with better production value would be better than what we see now for the reboot.

I say let's wait until we see more; such as official stills or trailer.

It wasn't until official stills from "Conan" when they came out, that many realized how poor justice the initial spy set pictures made it. Could very well be the same case here.

Man, I really dont want to be down on this movie (anyone who's seen my posts on various 2000AD threads knows how much I want this to be a success) but I'm not liking what I'm seeing thus far.

Seems to me [based on what we've seen] that they're going to get the tone right but get the visuals wrong (cars that wouldnt look out of place on a road of today? That Med-Wagon looks terrible - wtf?) whereas the Stallone effort got the tone horribly wrong but at least got Mega City One, it's inhabitants and their vehicles spot on, visually.

Maybe they should call in 'NOT SO MEGA-CITY 1' in this movie?

well to be fair, it's not really a set but a parking lot. We haven't seen a whole lot yet.

I am concern about this: it's a $40 Million dollar movie right? How much of the 3D will eat up the budget? To me, with a budget that low, you have to use your resources wisely and if the 3D is gonna take a chunk out, then it's like having an equalivant of having a budget within the mid $30 Million range. Every million counts so to me that's a waste of money.

It's a valid thought. At the same time, if that's the case, "District 9" cost $30 million total. So, that's kinda' of a comfort spot.

I want to be happy about this movie, but as of now I'm not based on the really dull butt direction it's heading in.

With District 9, you have a director who knows visual effects and how to shoot on the cheap, while Peter Jackson is there to hook him up with the CGI costs (I assume).

New pictures are very disappointing.
Even more than the first pic of Dredd.

Wanted to hold off commenting until I saw more pics from the movie but what the hell, with the new pics I may as well jump in.

Ok...I don't want to be too critical given what little we've seen, but I am not liking the body armor on the new uniform at all (big ass collar, no eagle, etc). On the helmet the designer has said it does not look as big the pic suggests (which suggests too damn big) so going by the design I like that, and will hope the designer is not fibbing.

The vehicles and snackstand prop are definitely underwhelming. Given the wealth of imagination that has gone into the books over the years making Mega City One a visual feast of futuristic excess, most things in it should look amazing to our eyes (the city scapes awe inspiring, the street level life a mix of the wonderful, exotic, weird, and downright disgusting).
Those efforts though just look so bloody ordinary. I would imagine it will all fit in well with everything else they have done, but it won't be the MC-1 I would like to see.

Oh well, being a die hard Dredd fan I will be seeing it whatever my personal gripes, and I hope they at least nail Dredd's character this time around (keep the helmet on, no cheesy puns, and no kissing!!) but visually I do think I'm gonna find it more than a little dissapointing. Hope I'm wrong, will have to wait and see.

Like Batman: Dead End, it's a very well-made fan film, but not something that would work for a much wider audience, imo.

Exactly as it is I agree. But from a visual stand point take the efforts they have done and put a buff actor in the uniform (the guy in the Dredd suit is too skinny) with some studio level bucks behind the designs, props, vfx, etc, and it would be a hellova lot more impressive than the suit they have put Urban in or the Justice Department barely disguised Estate cars imo.

did they have land vehicles in the comics?

Yes, Dredd rides one all the time (his Lawmaster bike), but the cars seldom look like anything we'd ever see on our roads today.

This is supposed to be nearly 100 years in the future. Those Justice Department Cars and the even lamer Med Wagon look like exactly what they are: Cars from today tarted up a little bit. 'Uninspired' is one word for it. 'Not even bloody trying' is four :csad:

Look, when I first saw those trucks, I honestly wasn't exactly thrilled beyond belief. However, I am, like many other fans, intrigued by the not-too-distant RoboCop/Mad Max future reinterpretation that can meet the budget and impress a wider audience who are probably only familiar with Joe Dredd by the Stallone film.

We all need to have "healthy" expectations of a $45 million production that is independantly financed.

Let's wait until we see more...

Personally I would rather see a faithful interpretation of the source than a reinterpretation having to borrow elements from other franchises. I will be seeing the film in any event, will just be prepared to accept the visual aspects are obviously not gonna be what I'd have liked them to be.

I had thought the screenplay taking most of the film within the block would have dealt with most of the budgetary concerns. It's not like they have to CGI render an entire world. I dunno...would creating vehicles that don't look like something a half decent mechanic could knock up in their garage be that much more expensive? Seriously, those designs seem more a simple lack of imagination than it does penny pinching.

I can agree on that. I am disappointed with what little we have seen, but I can hope it will get better.

In Judge Dredd-related news; here's Eric Powell's(The Goon) cover to Mega-City Masters Vol. 3 on stores in April 19, 2011

Seem to me, with the vehicles at least, they are going for a Mad Max vibe, which may not be a bad thing.
