Judge Dredd Reboot!!

Urban was on Attack Of The Show yesterday, and briefly talked about it. All he really said was shooting was done, so we have to be somewhat on the right path for a trailer.

This is somethng from back in March, but still interesting. The director of photography of "Dredd" talks a little of the film: http://www.bscine.com/2011/03/camer...-mantle-dff-bsc-127-hours-the-eagle-dredd-3d/

Q: What can you tell us about Dredd?
ADM: Kevin’s brother, producer Andrew MacDonald, approached me a while ago. It’s written by Alex Garland, a very astute, creative writer, who I’ve known since 28 Days Later. It was shot in South Africa on 3D – around 13 weeks principal, and seven weeks 2nd unit photography. It’s a dangerous film, in the sense that the story places itself precariously on the floorboards of an action sci-fi genre film whilst underneath there’s a no less entertaining allegorical comment about this kind of cinema and the violence that tends to come with this kind of product. Visually we have gone at it hammer and tongues. We shot entirely digitally, in scope, using RED MX cameras and SI2Ks, Phantom Flex highspeed, and multiple rigs shooting at the same time on first and second unit. I built some new cameras rigs that can take you very close to the action. It’s won’t look so much like the action films we’re accustomed to, and the audience won’t have things thrust in their faces every five minutes. I hope it will be more painterly. If we get it right, it will be a cross between Blade Runner and Clockwork Orange.

Another comic series I need to get a hold of. I'm a big fan of Brendan McCarthy and Simon Bisley, and I know they've worked on some Judge Dredd stuff.

Aside from reading the Batman/Dredd comic, I never even scene a 2000ad comic. Where do I start?

Anyone have any news about what's happening with this movie?

No release date.
No teaser/trailer.

Is this even coming out this year?

It's coming out sometime next year so there will be plenty of time putting a release date and a trailer, no rush.

It's supposedly coming out in Spring of 2012(March or April). I think it's possible that the earliest we'll see a teaser is on August attached to "Conan The Barbarian". There just might be something at Comic-Con. Who knows?

if this is successful what storys would you like to see adapted

the judge child could be interesting(just to see a true fergie) but maybe to much for a single film

personally the dark judges have to be in the next, come on seeing this on the big screen would be superb

Well, I would love to see The Dark Judges, or The Judge Child Quest, or The Curse Earth storyarch. However, as it appears that they are going for a more "realistic" approach, I just can't see how they could make The Dark Judges work.

"The Day The Law Died" is one that could be done.

Villains that I think could work for this cinematic take of Judge Dredd would be:

Chief-Judge Cal

The Angel Gang

Fink Angel (lookwise, he looks as creepy as Judge Death, only in a relatively more realistic manner)

Mechanismo

Chopper

and ofcourse,

Here's a tweaked-up version from a poster(Kowalsky) from the 2000asonline forums that brings out just a little bit more detail:

Yeah, well, it depends on how you look at it. Me? I think it looks like Dredd's early look in comics:

Snapshot_20110716_2.jpg

Probably looks fine from the front but at side on angles the size does make it look awkwardly stuck out to far from his face: The black lens part of the visor won't really align with his eyes much at all so his field of vision will be rather narrow (will be obscured at the sides and a lot in the middle by the nose bridge X area).

Having the same size and close fit as the Stallone version, but with the comic accurate details of this new one, would have been ideal for me.

Same here; it just looks so out of proportion [with the rest of the body] to me.

Just because it was like that in the very early stories doesnt necessarilly make it a good reason to make it so for the movie. I mean, they soon whittled down the size of the helmet to the size that we more closely recognise, didnt they? And Dredd's had [what?] thousands of stories with the smaller scale helmet.

The general aesthetic is fine but the proportions - the visor doesnt even cover the nose! Give me something the scale of your average Brian Bolland, Carlos Ezquerra or Cliff Robinson helmet and I'd be a happy camper.

The primary reason I actually dig the helmet is because I think it looks good. The size does not bother me. That it looks like the early illustrations, is a very nice bonus.

As for not covering the nose, well, in the previously released picture it did(kinda):

..I guess it depends on the angle.

All in all, a true test will come when we see footage of Dredd in action, and see how the helmet looks while Dredd is in motion.

I want to see Judge Death hammer a frozen chicken for a shoulder pad.

I know RT; and in many respects you are right in what you say. It's just that I see how well the costumes were done in 'Judge Minty' - and that was just a fan-film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2JhQXCjTLY - for one of the teasers; http://judgeminty.blogspot.com/2009/02/hi-ex-minty-is-go.html and http://judgeminty.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html for pictures of the costumes)

I get that they've changed certain aesthetic aspects of Dredd's look for this movie but if they get the scale of the helmet wrong and it looks awkward for the entire length of the movie, then someone will have dropped a massive clanger.

We need almost everything to go right with this, so hopefully no one part of the production has shot itself in the foot.

'Karl Urban' has a very fey looking chin-to-nose region. Not a good fit for the super chinned, super down-turned lips of Dredd. The plus-size helmet only exasperates the problemo.

The Minty costumes are very good. Imagine a buff actor in those leathers and it'd be damn near spot on from a comic fans pov. I know some artists have drawn Dredd on the skinny side, like Mike McMahon, but I prefer the a more heavy looking version myself, ala Ron Smith, Dillon and Ezquera.

On the helmet thing...Yes, it looking too big and awkward in these couple of shots is not very promising.

I have a good feeling about Dredd, then again i had a good feeling about Green Lantern and well...

don't think the helmet will be a problem, I hope sometime soon they reveal a full body shot, then we'll see how good or bad it's proportion is

I think the helmet's size has to do with applying a sense of practicality rather than cosmetic. Motorcycle helmets look pretty big on the wearer. Same as riot-police helmets, Marine helmets, and football helmets. I mean, they are aiming for a "certain" realism in this film, from what I understand.

The suits in the Judge Minty film, while they look good on our fanboys' eyes, I think they would look too "extravagant" for a film that is supposedly going to be gritty/realistic.

I personally feel Urban looks like a modern Roman soldier.

Hey new here, i happen to think that this look for Dredd is going to work for this reason.

in the most violent city in this futuristic world it makes sense for Dredd to have armoured look. the helmet for instance is more like Riot gear. after all the "judges" are only human. wouldn't you rather have armour than none at all.

It fits for this interpretation. Dredd is going back to it's roots.

having done a script review a while back for a website. if done right this movie will deliver on all counts.
