Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

There was a certain heart to that movie that this one doesn't look to have. It's a big problem with films these, there's too much emphasis on 'cool' and not enough on 'heart'. I understand what they've gone for with this film, but it has zero resemblance in anyway to the original. It may as well be a completely original property they are trying to launch.

Yes, exactly. And it's very obvious that the only reason they are using the Jumanji brand name as the title for this movie is because the studio wants to cash in on nostalgia among people who grew up with the original film, and they're also trying to cash in on widespread wisftful nostalgia for Robin Williams three years after his tragic death.

It's all ridiculous because it's already clear that this movie has none of the heart, soul, or creativity of the actual Jumanji film and has no real connection to the original at all. It's just using the Jumanji brand name for marketing purposes and doesn't actually have anything to do with Jumanji.

How is any of that clear from the trailer?

I think it looks ok. I like how they've updated it to be a video game. I like how this will actually be set within Jumanji. And I like what they've done with the characters. The geeky kid playing as The Rock for example.

See people moan about remakes literally being rehashed of the originals just with updated SFX... But here we have a remake that is taking the original and putting a completely new spin on it... yet people are still complaining? Bizarre.

Well...obviously, it's not a remake.

Seems to be a remake/reboot to me. It definitely does seem like a direct sequel.

But my point still stands. At least they doing something different.

At a certain point an idea becomes so far removed from the original that it's pointless linking the two. And judging from the reaction online people once again aren't having any of Sony's shenanigans.

Fair point. Or maybe not that many people give a **** about Jumanji without Robin Williams.

I also don't think Sony realises how many 80's and 90's kids grew up loving Robin Williams and love the original. Even if it wasn't an all round great movie there's a fondness for it. This reeks of another Ghostbusters situation.

I see it more of a Goosebumps situation.

I love the original and I'm actually looking forward to this, I think it looks like a lot of fun. Like others have said, it's not a remake/reboot - they're not just rehashing the original's storyline, they're doing something different with it, pulling them into the game instead of pulling elements from the jungle out.

Will definitely try to see it in the theater :)

This is a genuine mish-mash. You have the aspect from the show where the characters get sucked into the world. You have the ever so rare use of avatars. It also quite apparently has superpowers. Most of all, a pair of comedians to compliment a pair of action stars.

This is certainly no Jumanji, Zathura, or Goosebumps.

At least, it's not Battleship...

Jumanji was original. This is not.

Of course it's not original... it's a sequel. No sequel is ever "original." Know why? Because it's a sequel! It's literally a continuation of a story that's already been told... i.e. NOT ORIGINAL.

It's like Tron but the Greed is Crash Bandicoot game.
I'm don't have fond memory of the first movie, the concept is similar but updated without copying the original, so why not ?
I don't think it will do well but it looks fun. I will see it when the dvd is released.

This is Ghostbusters all over again...and with less talented comedic actors.

They had a chance to do a true sequel and squandered it because Sony's 60 year old execs think they know what the kids want to see. Vidya games!!!! What do you want to bet they don't connect this to the first Jumanji? The script was done and they were filming this before they released Ghostbusters.

Or, they could have done something original and not called it Jumanji. Sony is hoping brand recognition and nostalgia helps make money off of a crappy movie production.

Honest question I don't know the answer to. Has any revamped property from the 80's or 90's actually worked over the last 10 years?

Transformers became a billion dollar movie franchise despite critical panning.

I'm a 90s kid and I grew up on Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as well as Robin Williams in Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Aladdin. I never felt much of anything for Jumanji as a child though so Ithe reboot doesn't bother me, but I could also easily see myself not watching this ever.

The original Jumanji has a 48% on RT. Lets not act like its considered a classic.

This looks far better than the Ghostbusters remake and that was well received.

Can we get an update on the topic title? This movie isn't a remake.

Who gives a ****? I could list a bunch of classics that aren't 75+ on RT

It reminds me more of "The Rundown" an action adventure jungle type movie.

Not Jumanji

But does that make Jumanji a classic? Because even on the Robin Williams list, I don't really think it is up there. It was most certainly never Aladdin or Mrs. Doubtfire.

It looks like it could be fun. Goosebumps turned out good. Maybe this will too.
