I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

At the risk of sounding like a brat, it's sort of irritating me that we are already hearing casting/villain rumors for Man of Tomorrow before this. I want my ****ing FOOD, Reeves. :o

We can never hope to compete with the incredible hype of beloved star of the screen and King of Charisma Frank Grillo being promised to us as a primary character :o

I’ve accepted we’ll know who plays Brainiac before our big bad.

Well, considering Nicholas Hoult was the frontrunner for Reeves, I think that it could be the case that

- a rejected actor from Gunn could go to Reeves
- they are organizing at the same time the casting for Batman and Superman so the scooper could be confused on who is really auditioning for which one.

Anyway, since things are moving, I'm ok, and if Isaac is on board, I'm so happy (I suggested him as Dent in the thread years ago).

My only question is: how the hell Gunn is moving so fast for the sequel?!
I mean, ok, he wants to take advantage on the good success of the first one, and ok, he is faster than Reeves, but it's kinda weird (he wrote the script in - what - two months?).

I mean, it's not the Spiderman MCU timing, it's even shorter: we are near to Batman & Robin production timing :whoops: and we all know what that meant

If I had to take a guess, he more or less knew what the story was going to be and we've constantly heard from filmmakers that the sequel is easier in the sense that you can move forward with the story without having to set up the world.

I will say, I think peacemaker suffered from a writing perspective and having too much on the go.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Gunn is spreading himself way too thin.
Yeah... Creature Commando being kind of formulaic at its core, I guess Gunn wrote it on autopilot. But it's really the second season of Peacemaker that made me raise an eyebrow and wonder if he wasn't just starting to run out of steam all around.

Oh, there's certainly a comfort in not having to define an entire universe this time around and simply "using the toys", but that's also precisely where I think Gunn still misses the mark a bit.
I wouldn't say that Peacemaker had too much to say, but rather that the series, now well established, failed to exploit its full potential and already sank into a kind of lethargy.

EDIT: I've rambled on a bit too much about Peacemaker, while we're in the Batman thread...
I put my digression in a spoiler to make my post more concise on my main point.

I mean, when you're using a alternate-world scenario and you have your lead questioning himself after a murder and the victim's father seeking revenge, you can't pass up the opportunity to bring all these characters together when a version of the dead reappears. Yet Flagg Jr. was only used as a gag...
To each their opinion of course, but I felt like the entire season repeated the same dialogues over and over explaining why everyone was miserable without ever really bothering to move them forward using what the concept allows. There isn't even a dilemma for Chris to be tempted to stay with a resurrected family, knowing they could be rotten, etc.
I don't know, there were so many possibilities that could have led to dense and tense episodes, but let's see how long we can fill the time with Economos and Fleury talking nonsense... Frustrating.

I liked Gunn's Superman but I'm a little skeptical about MOT going so fast, in this whole context of the guy having already did a lot and both writing and directing what's coming next, alongside managing a studio... Despite all the emphasis on scripts having to meet certain standards, several of his projects have now given me the impression that his own writing was kind of rushed, lacking in polish and ingenuity.
