Just How Important is This Movie?

I'm confident Evans will do a good job, but I think his casting may be detrimental to the film overall. He's got name recognition, but people just don't think of him as a serious actor.

Hopefully Capt. America will change that. I think more people need to watch Sunshine as well as Cellular. He can play serious it's just that people are forgetting that there have been other actors that went from mainly comedies to dramatic roles throughout their careers. Tom Hanks anyone...

I think the name recognition thing for him is a bit of a stretch but I think you're right, I don't think anyone really takes him seriously.

Really? Who's Captain America and all the other comic movies aimed at? People in their late teens through their 20s to their mid-30s or so. I and most of my friends are squarely in that demographic and every single one of us knows who Chris Evans is. That's what I'm talking about when I say name recognition.

But yeah, every time his name is mentioned for Cap, people kind of shrug and go "really?" I think part of the reason is that most people didn't watch Sunshine. Evans' character was quite serious in that and he was literally the best part of that movie.

I think the Cap movie is aimed at all ages actually. That character's been around for quite some time. But yeah I think Evans is recognizable to the under 30 crowd.

I've waited 20 years so this is important to me.

Anyway, I have this gut feeling Cap isn't going to do to well with the general public, not because its Captain America, but because its Joe Johnson, and Chris Evans.

My baby Thor is going to blow up the box office, wait and see.

I tend to agree on the THor Blowing up in the Box Office. Face it the general audience will be left salivating based off the trailer footage that is going to be released. It is going to have most really wanting to see the movie and many WONDERING exactly what this movie will be about. It will also pull in fantasy pic/eye candy faithful based on what Asgaurd already looks like

I heard that if Thor doesn't make big money...the sun will actually go supernova.

Yeah, the only thing I'd argue is that comic movies can be aimed even higher than that age group. There are a LOT of 40 something's that grew up on Marvel characters. That's why these films make so much cash. The sad thing is that I bet more 40+ people love the characters than teenagers at this point.

Must be a cultural thing then coz I don't know anyone who knows who the hell he is. I asked one mate and he thought he was the dude who played Kirk in Star Trek and we're both in the same demographic. I think most average Joe's would struggle to name a film he was in, that's why I don't buy the name recognition thing with him, RDJ yes, Evans, not so much.

I assume by your use of the word "mate" that you're not American, so that may be why. Evans has had a whole lot of action and comedy movies aimed squarely at the late teens to early 30s demographic here in the US. I don't know how well they've done, but most people I know can certainly figure out who he is if you give them a couple of his films' titles.

Further adding fuel to my belief that Cap is gonna struggle outside the U.S.

Just a guess but I imagine he has a fair sized fanbase of girls/women who think he's "hot" so their is the possibililty that they will go see it just for him. Not saying a lot of them but you never know.

As much as people are exicted for Thor it's still a crap shoot on which of the two will perform better.

I hope both do well but I want Thor to do a bit better simply because of the type of film it will be. Fantasy and action. We do have Narnia and Potter but I think this film will be on a whole other level. I'm hoping that they have a lot of scenes in Asgard and not just a small portion of the film.

I can argue with the Captain America ages since he's been around since the 40's there's a larger age range there. My DAD who's now 82 used to Read Cap as a kid tho he hasn't read a comic except for the sunday paper since then.
I say let Evans prove himself before judgment from another film. Who knows MAYBE he'll fit this role better than Johnny Storm. ( even tho I liked his Human Torch)

There's no doubt he will do bad in Some countries JMC. I just hope then FANs in other countries stick it out and support Captain America.

Well they've said a couple times that the time in Asgard and Earth are about the same, Half Asgard and Half Earth. Makes sense since Thor's banished from Asgard while trouble brews on Asgard with Loki and Thor having to prove himself worthy of Mjolnir on Earth.

It's more a factor of ordinary director, suicidal release date and politics than fan support. That film is gonna have a lot going against it.

maybe JMC. tho here in the States the 4th of July would be the perfect week for Cap's opening I think.

The character appeals to people of all ages, I'm sure, but these movies (and, really, most action movies) are usually aimed at the young male demographic. They include a few touches to appeal to other demos (the romantic subplots, some male actors ladies might find appealing, etc.) but their primary audience is expected to be men in their late teens, 20s, and 30s.

You're going to get the core fans, which is number X. Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, those guys get pretty large groups regardless, the marketing and actors sell the rest the opening week. From there it's all about how good the movie is (usually). If the movie sucks, people won't see it again.

So how important is it that Thor is a good movie? Very important, because when it's a sequel, which Avengers essentially is, people base part of that on a previous movie. Batman Begins and TIH suffered because of the movies before them. I think the Iron Man buzz is losing steam, people will still come to watch RDJ act cool like he does in virtually every other movie he's ever been in, Thor will probably have the least amount of core fans and the cast is a good acting cast for the most part but wont' draw, captain America is the opposite, full of beautiful people, not as many good actors. It's really a mixed bag but the importance of Thor being good, not necessarily successful, but a really good movie is highly important.

If Thor is generally well recieved, even if it doesn't sell a lot, it will help out tremendously because people will at least buy the DVD. I'm much more worried about Captain America because he's what people think of when they think Avengers. I think Thor will have great acting but honestly the pics I've seen look cheap, like a Sci Fi original. I REALLY hope with editing it looks better but I wasn't impressed with the effects of Wolfman but it worked because it was old school like Wolfman. To be successful with the mainstream audience you need good effects, some movies draw their entire fanbase off of effects regardless of how terrible the rest of the movie is.

Sci Fi Originals (or are they Syfy Originals now?) must've come up a lot in quality from when I stopped watching them a few years ago if Thor looks like one of them.

And I'd call Evans and Weaving pretty strong actors for Cap. Maybe not Hopkins- or Branagh-level, but still good. The whole movie's basically gonna be built around them.

The film in all likelihood will be banned in the middle east... guaranteed

I don't know how anyone can look at the Thor stuff and think it looks cheep. That's insane IMO, it looks over the top huge. Those sets... the ones we have just gottne glimpses of looks trulyy grand and in the actual mood light of the movie...not the super bright light promo shot of the 3 the gear looks increadible.

Also the photage of Destoryer looks INCREADIBLE. CGI probably isn't even 100% complete there either. COME on for the first time in a marvel movie we are going to see an energy blast type of weapon. That thing looks far more fierce then Cyclops beam.

I guess if you don't have as much of an emotional connection to Kirby and Simonson's art style as longtime comic readers do, it can come off looking a bit cheap. But those costumes are literally real-life versions of Kirby and Simonson's work to a huge extent, so every time I see them, I'm instantly taken back to those formative runs in Thor's history. The costumes look and feel right to me.
