Marty: so doc how did you invent this? did you fall and hit your head?

doc: aagghh na son I was doing the chronic off mrs doc's belly and bam it hit me, look that bee even gots spinner from waaulmart on it.

It seems that every classic film with caucasians is being remade with a minority ensemble.

I agree. Maybe if it comes on TBS at some point and there's nothing on I'll watch. But sorry, the original is such a classic. Yes, the fight scenes in the new one are probably more realistic, and the action is better. But Mr Miyagi is a character you just don't remake, even if you call him Han and cast Jackie Chan. It'd be like remaking Terminator without Arnold, or Ghostbusters without Bill Murray.

I'm also going to skip out on this.

You can't replace what the original did.

Years from now people are still going to be saying "Wax on, wax off" not that stupid Jacket on jacket off crap.

Thaaaaaaaaaaaat's

Bull.

because Jackie Chan made it his own character and even though they are similare, Chan hit it out of the park.

And the original is such a classic, with however many flaws and cheese that other movies get butchered for sharing.

RYYYYYYYTE.

The original Karate Kid is an anthem for the 80s. Remaking it in modern times is just stupid IMO.

^ I don't see how a classic underdog story is directly tied to the '80s'. Just because the Karate Kid was an 80s film doesn't make the theme '80s'. Like Jackie Chan said in an interview, the story is a simple one that can and has been told many times throughout the years. The basic structure/storyline of the Karate Kid can and has been used many times since then...

Your loss...like I said last night, the 2010 version not only honors the original 1984 film, but like I mentioned before it enhances the characters and improves on aspects that was established in the original. They were able to create characters reminiscent of Daniel and Miyaji while still giving them their own unique personalities and backstories.

You can tell that this film was made with care and aspired to be more than some flimsy cash-in by the studio.

I'll be seeing it again for sure.

I saw the original in the theater, I still think it's a great movie...but I saw two things tonight:

-a group of Little-Leaguers having an end-of-season party near our table at the pizza place all talking about how they were heading off to see the movie tonight

-a whole group of kids in their karate class outfits lined up to see the movie while I was heading off to see The A-Team.

Yeah, it's an 80s classic...but it's not the 80s anymore. If this is a good remake, and these kids like this version as much as we loved the original, then I'm fine with it.

That's how I see it. I don't let this stuff bother me that much. I love me my Karate Kid movies, and this remake seems to be interesting and have a positive and inspirational message. Just like the original. If it inspires them, awesome. If not, there original will always be there.

LOL history repeating itself :)

Now what are you waiting for and go see The Karate Kid!

I seriously didn't see any difference between those kids and me and my friends back in 1984 when we saw the first movie. I'm hoping this movie is good and they like it just as much as we did.

Sure, I was annoyed when I heard they were remaking it...the original is still really good, and it seemed that is being made because Will Smith wanted his kid to be in it. But the new movie looks really good.

That's the main reason I'm skipping it. This is really nothing more than just a vehicle to get Will's kid in his own movie to make him a household name. Nothing will sucker viewers faster than a kid in a movie with an underdog theme.

Which was basically every movie in the 80s starring kids.

You know I really hated the nepotism at first then I remembered two of my favorite actors, Micheal Douglas and Jeff Bridges, were results of nepotism as well.

As far as remakes are concerned, I'm only against them when they're sloppy cash-ins. But if they are inspired, like this one seems to be, I'm all for it.

I would totally watch that movie.

So, why is this called Karate Kid,when hes being taught Kung Fu if I'm not mistaken??

Saw this movie last night with my wife and daughter and i have to say it was quite good.
I'm in my upper 30s and ive seen all of the originals.

This one was a very good "reboot."
Jaden was really good but Jackie was the real star of this movie.
I hate to admit it being a guy and all but one of the scenes had me tearing up a little bit.
If you've seen it you know which scene im talking about.

I would recommend it any family member any day. Much better than tons of this drivel being put out today.

Thumbs up!

oh... as far as the question why its being called Karate Kid. Thats the working title for the USA. In other countries it's called Kung Fu kid i believe.

They kept the Karate Kid name for the US because i seem to remember in one of the trailers one of the Chinese bullies making a mocking reference to Dre as "the karate kid"
while he was getting beat up.

I refuse to see this. If it was called Kung Fu Kid, id have no problem but it isnt.

Replace little bow wow with Justin Beaber and studio execs will be all over it.

HAHAHAHAHA, yeah sure you would pal. More like you would find something else to cry about. if a title is enough of a reason for you to avoid a movie then I pity you. Your loss is another's gain. Good on ya to all the others out there going to see it for purely the love of cinema & leaving your prejudices for after the movie is over, ya know, when you can actually form an honest opinion from an actual viewing.

Steve

Well Steve, I believe seeing another crappy remake cant be good for the future of the film industry. Especially how great this original was and didnt need a remake. I feel this disrespects the original in many ways and I refuse to see it. Im not "crying" simply forming my own opinion.

Well I haven't seen this movie yet but one thing is that it doesn't necessarily erase the first one. It's basically the same story in a different setting but with different characters. It could be considered and indirect sequel maybe ? Idk ..
I think remaking Back to the Future would be a different scenario though.

I think everyone would agree Kung Fu kid would of been a better title. It's like they didnt think we would be smart enough to connect this to the original film series so they had to make it blatantly obvious . Another thing is they want us to think this is special because its the first and not a sequel I'm guessing.

It's Kung Fu Kid overseas, just not in the US.

I'm the last person who will watch this movie, but I find it laughable that Harry Knowle's review complains about the abundant use of subtitles. Really? God forbid we got to a foreign country and people speak the native language.

^ It's "Karate Kid" in Sweden as well.
