Superman Returns Kevin Smith Rips On Superman Returns

*In response to the thread title. :o

I was there for this and it was super funny.
I so want Kevin Smith right now. :meow:

I'll treat you with the same courtesy and try not to get annoyed at your low-brow, snobbish attitute and complete lack of understanding of film. ;)

I understand that any movie featuring the main villian with a lady friend named Kitty and a henchman named Brutus is doomed for suckdom!

Let me ask you this, what qualifies Superman Returns as an artsy film, in your opinion?

Whos Harry Knowles?

And I don't suppose a film featuring the main villain with a lady friend named Eve Teschmacher and a henchman named Otis would be doomed for, as you put it, "suckdom"? :whatever:

That film became a classic.

Harry Knowles and Kevin Smith cancel each other out. (Kevin disliked SR, Harry liked SR) I guess there is some sort of balance in the universe.
I dunno. I think the only way Smith and Knowles could actually come close to balancing each other out is if both sat at opposite ends of a seesaw.

I'd pay to see that.

I hope all of you posters here will one day understand that Kevin Smith, and posters like Matt for that matters, are dead on about this film. Superman Returns is a film about a whole lot of nothing based of bits and pieces of a 25 year old movie. It's sad and hilarious at the same time that Superman Returns tried to be so emotional but it fell flatter than Nicole Richie's ass. I understand some of you hate Kevin Smith, but put that to the side. And do the same with Bryan Singer's past accomplishments, although I personally think his X-Men films were overrated, and think about it. It's also sad and hilarious that instead of defending Bryan Singers work on Superman Returns with evidence FROM Superman Returns, posters will bring up his PAST movies. Im sorry, were not talking about Usual Suspects, were talking about Superman Returns.

I'll personally never forgive Singer for taking Lex back in time to the lamest version of the characters, a real-estate mongul. What a joke, after all the beatiful work that his been done on the Luthor character over the years, and the current climate of today's world, and Singer wants Lex to go after Real-Estate and have bimbo female partners. Screw you, Singer!

I didnt take Singers past accomplishment into account with SR, because they have nothing to do with it. I enjoy SR a hell of a lot on its own merits, not those of other movies.

Well good for you, and Serenity is awesome!

I made the comment due to the fact that when most Superman Returns fans go to defend Bryan Singer's decisions with the movie, they basicall say, in a nutshell.....

"Bryan Singer did the Usual Suspects, so he can do whatever he wants with Superman Returns and we should all love and respect it for being a great piece of artistic material".......

or something like that. None of them can defend Superman Returns by pointing to the movie itself. Or they defend Singer with X-men, which by the way is an overrated movie that's best qualities are Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Sir Ian Mckellan.

But anyway, good for you if you enjoyed it, because I didn't. And Serenity is awesome.

Umm yea.....it was the 70's, cheese was in at the time. So were Real Estate villians!

The Lex in the 70's was that way for a few reasons:

1.) That was who Lex was in the comics of those days. That was the kind of stuff he did.

2.) Originally Lex was written as a more viscious and brutal man. He actually killed people himself. But Donner came in and knew that parents would b e seeing this with their kids, and dropping them off at the Saturday Matinee. So he had to tame him down to make him kid friendly. He said that in an interview somewhere. I think it is the Starlog one.

The fact is, you can make a villian more meaner today and still have the ratings board give it a PG. Look at Batman 89. That movie would have gotten a hard R and kids would have never been allowed into that thing even 5 years earlier. So Singer could have made him a harder man especially of the fact that he has resentment and hatred for being in Jail for 5 years.

I also did not like the fact that the press was not following his every move. This would have been the Osama Bin Ladden in that universe. Osama only took out a few buildings and planes whereas Lex was trying to take out an entire coast with billions of people in STM. If Osama had been caught, then gotten out after 5 years and finagled his way into a elderly rich widows fortune, you don't think the press wouldn't have been following him. Look at how much they follow O.J.. That guy can't do anything without it being in the press and causing public outcry. Hell his TV show/book deal got cnacelled due to public outcry. Singer missed that opertunity. Luthor plotting against Superman but putting on a public face of redemption.

If I would have had my way , Lex Luthor would have been a corporate CEO to the world, but involved in terrorist activity.

Jesus. Some like it, some didn't. Oh well, it's when people bash the other side for their opinion that is stupid.

Kevin Smith made Jersey Girl, so what, does one bad movie mean he shouldn't be allowed to make more romantic movies? If Kevin Smith didn't like SR, that's his opinion. Some people like Mallrats and I hate it. Love Chasing Amy though.

Chasing Amy is my favorite Kevin Smith movie as well, and it's the one people talk about the least!

I agree with smith. This movie was undeniably bogged down in its own self-importance...

on the other hand, I wanted to commit suicide while watching Jay and silent bob strikes back...

Wow...the people flaming Smith for voicing an opinion on a movie need their heads examined. Are they that so insecure about their precious crappy movie they need to flame people who didn't like it? I shouldn't be surprised because I myself have gotten a lot of crap in this forum for it.

Face it, many people (including myself) hated this movie. It wasn't the lack of action. It was the horrible story, shakey history (I'm sorry, but the concept of a partial continuation is stupid), the unlikable Superman, the mis-cast/characterized Lois, etc. This was not a Superman movie. It failed on MANY levels. It is the worst comic movie since Batman & Robin. Of course this is my opinion, and knowing many of the people in this forum, I am gonna continue to get flamed for it.

Before you call the man a fat idiot, look in the mirror because you yourself have no room to talk.

Anyone who loves returns but hates smith is an idiot! You forget that he read the superman script of 95/6 and told warners that it was way too campy. They then aked him to rewrite it which led to Tim Burton's involvement. Then Smith left while Burton stayed. Then Burton left which led to Ratner, then McG then Ratner again then finally Singer got the job (who toatally messed it up). So in my opinion Smith got the ball rolling and if you understand that, well you're an idiot.

Someone said it on these boards, something along the lines of Smith got the ball rolling but Singer knocked the ball out of bounds. :woot:

Smith's treatment was so better than SR - despite the meddling he had to endure. Sad now that he thinks its time to lay the character to rest. But he may be right on that.

Sorry, anyone who prefers the epitomy of lameness that is X3 over SR has no validity in my book.

juhuuuuuuuuuuuuuu lexlives is back.
its nice to have you back.

his was equally bad.

although I don't agree with his views on Superman Returns Kevin Smith gets a thumbs up from me for saying TMNT the movie was one of his favorite comic movies

Yes he is.

But we have to watch a Smith's superhero movie before we can say but he... seems to be unable to do it. When he has the chance to do it, he turns it down. Then he talks against people like Burton who have suceeded - in a much bigger and significant way than Smith - at making movies (superhero movies amongst them.)

Ok until this comment I was content to just read and laugh at some of what I consider the funny posts but you sir are high on crack if you think in any way shape or form Singer matches up to Mel Brooks and if you want people to think like the same you might want to remember the golden rule of puff puff pass so we can all be this deluded.
