Mystery/Thriller Killing Eve - BBC America

No, not at all.
why did we have to do the bury your gays trope again? bond gets to, mostly, escape and smooch a girl at the end of every adventure. Why couldn’t we have had that? It’s infuriating what was a previously progressive series ultimately became regressive in the end.

at least they got a bit of romance I suppose

Yeah this ended with a thud. Honestly, this whole season just seemed like they wanted to rush to the end, capped off by a stupid, abrupt conclusion.
Obviously embracing the “bury your gays” trope was the most upsetting thing. I get that Villanelle and Eve are a doomed pairing but they didn’t have to lazily just kill Villanelle off and leave us hanging as to what happens with Eve. Like, really? This was the most unsatisfying, cut-to-the-credits ending to a show since House of Cards. They clearly didn’t know how to wrap it up and it almost seems like they didn’t even care.

What also bothered me so much this season was how The Twelve basically turned out to be vague McGuffins. All the mystique and intrigue about them was essentially wiped away. Turns out they’re not a group of powerful government officials but are just a group of boomers who have somehow operated secretly for decades with the goal of… honestly I’m not even sure. But they’ve been killing who knows how many people and escaping any kind of justice for all this time…Yet they’re apparently so stupid and incompetent that ALL of them conveniently meet on a riverboat with almost no security so a single assassin can kill them in a couple minutes. You can tell how disinterested the showrunners were in them; we don’t even get a clear look at them as they are being slaughtered.

This season also introduced a handful of likable new characters that ultimately proved kinda pointless. Pam was really just there because we needed someone to kill Konstantin. Helene seemed like an intriguing ally and a potential love interest for Eve but nope, she needs to die before her story really goes anywhere. Same with Gunn (well, she survived but she may as well have died). And I liked Yusuf, but it was a bit jarring for Eve to suddenly have a male lover after we were left to believe at the end of season 3 that she might have finally explored a relationship with Villanelle. It almost felt like the showrunners winking to the straight people in the audience and saying, “Don’t worry! She’s not ALL the way gay!”

I don’t know. I loved the first two seasons of this show so much. The third was a bit weaker but I was still into it. But this one seemed like it just wanted to quickly wrap things up so Jodie Comer can go have a movie career. I’m not blaming her by any means but it seems like the producers accepted that the actors are in demand so they needed to just finish this thing off quickly. And that’s a shame because it really was a refreshing, innovative, fun spy/romance dramedy for the majority of its run.

I will say, as bad as the ending may have been, reading some of the showrunner's comments makes it so, so much worse. Never thought I would see takes from showrunners worse than "themes are for 8tth grade book reports".

Can you include a link? I’d like to read these comments, as bad as they sound.

'Killing Eve' Series Finale Showrunner Laura Neal Spoiler Interview

This has some of them.

Talking about the death, and how it is a moment of rebirth of the other character, just seems like really, really stupid based on what the show has done. And insulting the fans. There is also some comments that I've seen, that given everything going on right now, comes off a tad homophobic

It would've been so easy to flashfoward to them 6 months from now, sitting at a cafe enjoying their company with one another, V still showing some crazy traits. Pan to our good ol'friend Carolyn watching them from afar. She pulls out her gun, we flash to V/Eve being all cute together and then fade to black.

Yeah that would have been loads better. Or even the old “there’s an explosion, everyone assumes they’re dead, ambiguous ending where they spend the rest of their days in cafes somewhere in Italy” would have been loads better.

the way it comes off now is, it’s finger wagging. Like they’re saying “if only they had resisted those evil deviant urges they would have not died or grown old alone”. What an awful way to end the series. I’ve seen a lot of buzz on socials from people begging phoebe Waller bridge come back and do the ending properly so fingers crossed there

Oh my god that’s not how bullets work underwater :argh:. Writers should have to google “mythbusters underwater bullet” before writing a scene like that.

…anyway that was frustratingly disappointing. This season had a rough start but I thought things improved a lot once Villanelle and Carolyn were in Cuba. So sad that this show ended in such a ****ty way after such a fun run overall.

20 years after Tara, another LGBTQ character gets killed by a bullet unexpectedly coming from out of nowhere. Sad how such a progressive show ended with such a backward, cliche ending. This season was definitely the worst of the bunch for me. The beginning especially was so tedious. Villanelle and Eve started at such a weird spot this year. Both their storylines started out really lame but slowly got better. Did not care for Yusuf. Villanelle’s whole seeking religion schtick didn’t work IMO and the Jesus hallucinations were kinda unfunny too. Other things I didn’t like were not getting an explanation for Kenny’s killer; the Twelve were deprived of all their intrigue; Pam, Helene, and Gunn were all ultimately wasted. Carolyn was fun to watch though. And I didn’t care for Pam at first but then she got her groove and she was much more likeable.

And that “rebirth” interpretation of that scene by the showrunner is such utter horse crap. Even if we forget about everything that has come before, that is not how that scene played out at all. She’s left helpless, all alone, and we have no idea what is going to happen to her next.

I’m not entirely turned off about the spinoffs just yet but it really depends on what characters they chose to focus on. At least it most likely won’t be this showrunner.
