Kingsman: The Secret Service

He and Victoria's fiance share winks.

But I would almost put Stardust on the same level as Princess Bride which I think is high praise.

Yep! And the fiancé was Henry Cavill in a blond wig.

Anyway, this movie was great. Taron Egerton for Peter Parker? I think it could work.

Saw the movie this afternoon. Overall I really, really liked it. My only real complaints were I think that church scene was overlong and the princess's lines at the end were just clunky and dumb, especially for a movie full of otherwise smart and witty dialogue.

I honestly thought that Stardust wasn't that good. Like it was trying for The Princess Bride vibe, but it never hit the right notes.

Saw it and it was great. Firth was fun to watch. Hamill was great and I never thought I'd hear a British Joker. The ending was weak though, it sort of just ended.

Admittedly that ending did make me think:
"if the idea is to show how Bond bedding the girl at the end of pretty much every movie is actually really dumb, then it worked." I also wondered if Roxy being kind of sidelined during the final act was also a jab at Bond? How those movies tend to introduce these supposedly really tough and capable female agents/characters, but then they usually end up not doing much during the final climax.

I loved Stardust. And now that I've see this one, I can still say Vaughn's batting a thousand with me. I just love his movies.

I kind of agree with the complaints about the ending, but the rest of the movie was so awesome I didn't care.

I think the general consensus on the Spidey boards is that, at 25, he's too old to be a new Spidey. Especially one in high school. I personally would prefer him over the main names being bandied about over there, tbh. But they have a point, I think he is pretty unlikely due to age.

Saw this movie Saturday and all I got to say is WOW. This movie was a lot of fun. That ending was great and that church scene was brutal. 8/10 and this was actually the 1st movie I saw so far this year.

Kingsman: The Secret Service takes everything i love about the James Bond films and turns it up about 100 notches.
Providing enough of a back story so i cared about the Kingsman's newest recruit Gary "Eggsy" Unwin(Taron Egerton a first
time on the big screen natural) and providing enough heart to give this action romp a good foundation
It was great to see Colin Firth in an action role.Samuel L. Jackson as Richmond Valentine a madman and sinister combo
of Russel Simmons & Steve Jobs was extremely funny, and his sexy henchwoman Gazelle (Sofia Boutella) with killer prosthetic legs
The rest of the cast which includes Mark Strong
,Michael Caine,Sophie Cookson, and Mark Hamil, looked like they were having a great time

Director Matthew Vaughn shot the action sequences with frenetic and sped up shaky style, but i still didnt miss a punch or kick.

Some of the turns in the film were predictable but im looking forward to the Kingsman's next mission

Scale of 1-10 a 9

It seems critics and general public are not that crazy about the movie, the RT score is around the 70% range, which is ok but nothing spectacular, and the Cinemascore is just B+, while American Snyper got a rare A+: http://www.cinemascore.com/

Why did you randomly bring up American Sniper?

Didn't the Transformers movies get an A or something? So...yeah.

I can buy that. It's not a movie for everyone. It can be really violent, rather crass at times, cheeky, and very "specific" humor. It's sort of like Kick-Ass, I personally liked it, but I cannot really say that people are wrong for not. It's a taste issue and I can see WHY some people wouldn't like it, even if I don't share that opinion.

This is going to score an estimated 42 million for the 4 day weekend. I smell sequel.

Agreed, is just a matter of taste. I'm wondering if Man from Uncle will do better since it seems less over the top, I won't be surprised if it does.

I highly doubt it.

I actually loved the ending. I'm glad they didn't do the "safe," cliched ending with the two young, attractive leads.

Also, am I the only one who expected a Merlin "twist" the whole movie, only to be pleasantly surprised that there wasn't one?

A Merlin twist? No. I had seen the trailers too many times. It was clear which side he was on in the third act. Plus, it would have been one twist too many imo. So I never expected it, especially with how much of a true mentor he was.

I don't think the character was actually presented in a way that the twist was going to happen. It's just that it was Mark Strong, so I was like "is he REALLY a good guy?" I'm glad he was. I also saw the movie like a month ago, having only seen the first trailer once or twice.

Admittedly the thought did cross my mind, just because it was Mark Strong in the role. I kind of think that it might have been somewhat intentional on Vaughn's part, so that:
Sir Michael Caine's Arthur turning out to be the traitor
would be even more surprising for the audience. They'd be expecting the guy who always plays villains to turn out to be one, which isn't what happens.

I've never frequented the Spider-Man board more times than I have this week. But the people over there... God. I can't tell if they are squealing teenage fangirls or single minded adults. I want to be there but... I feel like I'm not in a sane world.

But anyway back to this movie. Saw it last night, thought it was very well done. I don't love Vaughn like a lot of people here, but the man is so damn good at executing exactly what he wants out of his films. He never really misses a step. When he says he just wants to create a fun, kick ass film that doesn't take itself too seriously, damn does he ****ing mean it. Goldman and his writing are usually on point with this stuff. The man is simply the best at making cartoonish things real. He'd make an ideal G.I. Joe director, weird as that may seem. He just completely gets the cartoonish aspect and lending it to real life. He fits this and Kick Ass more than X-Men.

Taron was fantastic. The guy looks like a frat boy *****ebag but he is so damn likeable and charming. I'll take this guy over Channing Tatum any day of the week.

Firth as always was terrific. Dat church scene. ****. And the ending. :funny::up:

I'm very happy for the opening weekend. My theater really enjoyed themselves and if this grows like I hope it does, I can see this being a real crowd pleaser.

Vaughn, why didn't you direct Fantastic Four? :csad:

No, but pretty much all of his most famous roles are villainous. It's what the GA knows him for.
