I like that Skull Island seems to be a fresher take on the concept rather than the usual tale.

Very hyped to see it tomorrow. :D

I wouldn't say MurkeNyou is "limiting" nor do I think he is calling for the same exact story. We don't need to see a story where natives sacrifice Anne, Kong falls in love, Kong gets captured and taken to New York, steals the girl, and falls off of the Empire State Building. But I do think that Kong's relationship with the Ann character (or a similar character) is a key part of his characterization that makes him a bit more human than the traditional kaiju. So I don't think there is anything inherently unreasonable about wanting for a Kong who is more intimately associated with his human counterparts and has some element of his tragic love story in play.

I mean, it wouldn't be a true Superman without Lois Lane somehow involved. Or perhaps to use a more appropriate analogy, tied to another old Universal horror movie...would it truly be the Phantom of the Opera if his obsession with Christine were not his primary motivation? If one were to make a Phantom of the Opera story where he is a guy in a mask who lives underneath the Opera and fights crime on the streets of Paris, with no hint of his obsession with Christine and his music, would it really be just a "different take on the character?" Of course not. It wouldn't be a different character all together.

And, while not to speak for him, I think that is MurkenYou's point. This isn't a movie starring the character King Kong; it is a movie with a giant ape kaiju who shares Kong's name.

6.5/10

Kong isn't the eighth wonder of the world but I think maybe Brie Larson might be. Her presence, charm and beauty are captivating. The cast in this movie had to be stellar because the character's they play are paper thin and hardly even written at all. You needed Loki, Nick Fury, Nova Corpsman and Captain Marvel or at least something other than what was on screen.

What results is a cross between a dull horror film where most of the cast gets picked off one by one and a cool monster brawl movie. The Kong fights carry the movie and the lack of connection to anything drags it down. Honestly, the movie needed more Kong. What does hit the screen is a completely middle of the road experience that barely delivers what it expected of it. The best way to put it would be a weak but not offensive movie.

Her smile in this movie... best I've ever seen.

That is exactly what I'm saying.

^^ I was about to post this.

Deadline usually stays on the lower end of the projections so maybe 50-55 million OW isn't out of the question. Go Kong.
Nah, Deadline usually goes high. They have had to knock money off their early totals a lot of the last few months.

I never trust early numbers from deadline or any of the trades. We'll get some good numbers at like 3 a.m. my time.

Deadline has underestimated the films over the last few weeks. They underestimated both Get Out and Logan. But I have a sneaking suspicion they are not under estimating Skull Island. I could be wrong but that's just my feeling right now.

Yeah, I don't trust estimates based off early numbers. Just trust the actual numbers.

Variety seems pretty good at it. They also wait a lot longer then Deadline to start reporting this stuff.

It's called Kong: Skull Island to let people know not to expect the same old story

You all jumped on the Brie Larson train pretty late. Hipsters. :o

Yeah, she was bae in the ultimate hipster movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World! ;)

That said, I am happy for her that she has broken out in the mainstream. Loved her in Short Term 12 and she was haunting in Room. Never would've guessed the latter would land her an Oscar and a superhero movie though.

Scott Pilgrim, beyond being one of my favorite films, has all the "baes".

Please, do they call him King Kong?

As far as I know Universal owns the name "King Kong" which is why this film had to be named Kong: Skull Island instead of King Kong: Skull Island. If he isn't called king Kong in the film it's because of Universal's ownership of that name.
