Kong: Skull Island - Part 3

Spielberg only had input in the first one, the rest were all Bay's creative babies.

As someone who likes those movies (minus the fourth one), I personally think Skull Island was more enjoyable. Yes, even more than the first one.

I'm only talking about the first Transformers movie. The rest of are cinematic diarrhea.

I was just shocked that these two indie writers could write such cliched and obvious characters. Howard got annoying. I get it. She's an overworked business woman who doesn't remember her nephew's names and is out of touch with the real world and learns things! She gets dirty! These aren't bad ideas necessarily, I've just never seen such overly simplistic execution in a mainstream blockbuster in a long time. It was like something out of the 80's. It appears when they settled on the first ideas that came to their head and didn't decide to make it more nuanced.

To each his own but I did like there was some nuance to Howard's character in that we got to see her grow over the course of the film. Pratt's character is literally exactly the same at the end as he was at the beginning of the movie. Not to mention it was more or less like he was portraying a more laid back version of Peter Quill. I'll agree, the characterization in JW wasn't the best in the world, but Howard's character easily shined more & at least had an arc.

Oh, she had an arc, definitely a good thing. It's just like I said, it was overly simplistic and could have been given more depth. This is a Jurassic Park film, but all Kong was a King Kong movie, and we managed to get from those characters what the likes of Howard was lacking.

To be fair, though, as you said, it's a Jurassic Park film, so trying to reach too deep could've done a disservice to the film.

You can still have great characters in your monster movie though, otherwise the threat and fun of the monsters won't mean anything. That's why Jaws and Alien are classics. Those movies knew their genre and gave the right amount of depth and writing to their character to match the type of story, and it's just as compelling as any character driven drama out there.

JW does have likable characters, though. They don't have the depth and nuance of characters in the movies you mentioned, but they were at least a step-up from what we got in JP III, sans Sam Neill, of course. But, in any event, the sequel will allow them to dive deeper into the characters, which is why I'm glad they're sticking with Claire/Owen as lead characters as opposed to bringing in all new faces. It'll give Howard and Pratt the opportunities to display all of the quirks and what not that they didn't get to explore in JW.

JW has potential to make better of okay characters.

Maybe it's because I've seen JP3 so many times and I'm used to them, but the Kirby's are endearing to me. Sure they feel out of place in a JP film and belong in an Alexander Payne film but they felt more real than Owen or Claire. But still, neither get anything spot on for their movies.

But that's where Kong just really succeeds. I wouldn't mind seeing these characters again if they popped up. I'd even like to see Hiddleston and Larson as older characters in a KvG movie.

The Kirby's and some of the other characters of JP III aren't all bad, but for me, it was the opposite. At least in Claire's case...but then again, maybe I'm biased because it's Bryce Dallas Howard.

And yeah, totally, I wouldn't mind seeing Hiddleston or Larson's characters return. I'd be interested in seeing how they could weave them into KvG. I probably wouldn't mind seeing Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character again either if they actually let him exhibit some life and act like a real person and not someone who's just there as filler in between the monster fights.

I would like to see more development of the premise that the creatures on Skull Island come from inside the earth - the hollow earth theory. Eventually they will need some kind of explanation of how the finally, full-grown Kong can get off of the island. He certainly won't be able to swim the ocean or walk across it - no matter how tall he will eventually be, it will not be tall enought. And certainly there will not be a boat or barge big enough to carry Kong to the known world.

So it seems to me that Kong will need to enter into the bowels of the earth and come up wherever he will eventually fight Gojira.

I didn't know what to expect of this movie, but I absolutely loved it. I love the 1973 setting, and having it be a throwback to all those 1970's disaster flicks, with a huge cast. John C. Reilly is friggen hilarious (It sounds like a bird but it's a ****ing ant" ROFL!

The action is top notch, both my sons loved it. I couldn't figure out what those creatures reminded me of, until my son said after the movie "were those supposed to be those creatures from temple run?" Not sure if that's what they had in mind or not but it definitely was reminiscent of that.

Loved the tag scene too. It was almost like they started out trying to troll people who wait around for the post credit scenes. [blackout]"Are you just going to sit there?"[/blackout]

This is the text book definition of a popcorn flick and a great throwback. I didn't even realize until after that it was supposed to be set in the Godzilla universe. I think it will be a fun crossover to see.

8/10

I'm sure they will explore the hollow Earth theory more as the series goes on. It was mentioned in Godzilla as well. The beginning of Godzilla started with miners falling into a big empty pocket under the surface where it looked like something had burst out of it.

It's got me curious too though. In the Japanese Godzilla series there's Monster Island. Where a lot of giant creatures live. I wouldn't mind a side movie where a Monarch team ventures into the hollow areas under the surface, and have to survive escaping. As several giant creatures live just miles below us. It wouldn't even have to feature any famous monsters, just expand on the joint universe.

Question for you guys. The post-credits scene hinted at
Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah. We know Godzilla will be fighting KG in his next film, and then there's the Kong vs. Godzilla movie in the works. But do you think we're getting a proper Skull Island sequel where Kong squares off against Rodan? We did see little pterodactyl-type creatures in SI, so I think it's possible.

More like Godzilla 2 is going to be a remake of Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster, which has Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan team up against Ghidorah

Oh, I see. That makes sense.

I do hope we get a Kong: SI sequel of sorts though. I'm interested in the monsterverse they're building but I'd like to just see this particular story continue on its own as well.

Honestly, a Kong sequel is so far off, that's hard to predict what will happen. Besides, I have no idea on what Toho's feelings are with a non-Godzilla crossover.

Hmmm, true. I just enjoyed this movie so much I want more. I like the whole "monsters destroying cities" genre as much as anyone else but I'm way more into the "unexplored territories full of unknown monsters" genre.

I could see a Kong sequel being made after GvK, assuming all goes well at least.

And he isn't killed off in it. :hehe:

Haha there's no way they're gonna kill off Kong. ;)

Yep. Him and Godzilla are gonna team up to stop MechaGodzilla who has been engineered by a crazy scientist played by Jessie Eisenber-wait.

They'll wait to kill Kong in the inevitable King Kong Lives remake. :o

Do you guys think there is going to be a sequel?
If so then what would happen in it? I can't think of anything interesting and something that wasn't already seen in the first movie if it's set on Skull Island again. They can't do much with Kong when he is that big.

I'd like to see them play with the canon Kong story a little bit... with the Empire State building and all that stuff. But instead of Kong dying he retreats or something along those lines setting up a bout with him and Godzilla or whoever.

I'd also like to see more of Skull Island's underground places and creatures explored.

Yes please give me more of that hollow earth theory stuff, because I find it really interesting. I'd love a movie where a Monarch team goes underground to find what was on the otherside.

I think it'll be best to leave out the Empire State Building. We've already established this is a different Kong than what we've come to see before. There's really no need to have him scaling the Empire State Building just to get shot down. Let's explore some new territory.
