Kong: Skull Island - Part 3

I think it'll be best to leave out the Empire State Building. We've already established this is a different Kong than what we've come to see before. There's really no need to have him scaling the Empire State Building just to get shot down. Let's explore some new territory.

You know what, you're right. An Empire State Building movie could be titled The Death of Kong. Everything in between would be new stuff. I like it.

Yeah, if they're going to do something to that extent, would be best to have that be the end. I'm also glad they got far, far away from the "ape sees woman, falls in love" paradigm. Here's hoping Kong stays away from that.

They should steer clear of that, even in the last film. What made this movie so good, IMO, was that it didn't follow the familiar Kong pattern. Besides, if he's going to flight Godzilla, he'll be way too big to climb the Empire State Building. He should be able to just knock it over.

The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet tall and Kong and Godzilla will be between the 300-400 foot range. He could definitely still climb it.

His weight would probably crush the entire structure of the building though. It wouldn't be enough to hold him.

True, wouldn't be able to get too far before the structure would likely start coming apart.

Maybe he should climb the new One World Trade Center. I like how they changed it in the 1976 remake. Maybe they should do it again.

Instead of climbing it let's just have Kong and Godzilla battle in its midst and completely destroy the damn thing. :p

Seeing the new World Trade Center taking on massive structural damage on film is probably not a good look.

Kong held really well this weekend in spite of Beauty and the Beast's massive opening. It was only down 52% compared to Godzilla's 67% second weekend drop. It's also at $260M WW now and should close in or surpass $300M by the end of next week. I believe $500M+ WW is pretty much locked for it, but the question now is will it surpass Godzilla's total?

its still not gonna make its budget back or touch godzilla domestically

Saw it, thought it was quite good, not quite as good as Godzilla for me and quite a bit behind Jacksons Kong which I absolutely loved. It had some decent action but again nothing as good as Kong vs the 3 V-Rex's in the last movie.

I did like this Kong but just felt the movie needed a few more scenes of seeing him not just as a brute. Have more scenes like him lifting the helicopter so that other creature could escape. I actually thought it tied in quite well with Godzilla and set up the universe they are making a bit more. I liked how they linked them subtly rather than beating you over the head with it.

Didn't think much of the human characters, Brie Larson is hot as hell but there wasn't much to her character. Samuel L Jackson was a bit too extreme and John C Reilly actually ended being the best character in the movie. I did enjoy the themes on war and the way the director shot some scenes was really good. But there was a bit if heart missing which effected my enjoyment. I will say though, I didn't think much of the last Godzilla movie on first viewing, but it grew on me greatly with re-watches, hoping the same happens here. But for now 7.5/10.

Just saw the movie I thought it was solid. Way better than Godzilla (2014). I give this film a 7.5/10

I meant WW, of course it's not going to touch Godzilla domestically. A lot of it depends on how it performs in China/Japan this weekend, but $500M very likely and that should atleast help it breakeven.

I'm positive SI will at least manage to break even based on its performance thus far. Sure, it's not as much of a success as Godzilla, but I'll be happy that it won't be deemed a flop either.

Speaking of Godzilla, at this juncture I think I'd actually take SI over it. The characters have far more life and the pacing is just so much better. Godzilla was handled in a superb fashion by Edwards, but the film really needed to have some of its runtime shaved off and it would've flowed far better. Unlike SI, it feels like an exercise getting through the human bits whereas with the former, the characters actually seem like real people with real emotions instead of being dull and lifeless.

Destroying a building that's been built as a symbol of hope and freedom and moving on from a massive tragedy for New Yorkers (like myself) and the Country as a whole. Yeah not a good idea, just saying. There'd be a lot of people finding it to be in very bad taste, me being one of them.

Does anyone else think that showing Reilly's character and the Japanese pilot adapting to life on the island, growing to become friends and living there would have been a better story than what we got? I just didn't think much of the human characters here except for Reilly and was more interested to know more about he adapted to living there.

I know they wanted to link it to Godzilla but just explain that Kong lives for hundreds of years.

I think it we would've seen that, it would've ruined the surprise of seeing Reilly there later.

Yeah, there was no surprise there. I do think seeing some flashbacks of Reilly and the Japanese pilot would have been cool though, or even better, having the Japanese pilot survive as well. If I had one complaint about the movie, it's that the Asian characters really got the shaft when it came to dialogue. The female scientist only had a handful of lines and the pilot and natives had no dialogue at all, I think.

Finally saw this, and thought it was pretty great! I loved Jackson's Kong, but taking it in a new direction was much appreciated by me, and they handled that new direction VERY well. Not only that, they introduced some very fun characters and, for the first time ever, everyone I wanted to survive actually made it out! I really hope we get a sequel, I know an actual Kong sequel isn't likely, but a movie following this same cast going down into the Hollow Earth would be amazing! I feel vindicated after defending John C. Rielly when the trailers came out, since most everyone seems to agree he was one of the best parts. And hopefully this further boosts the careers of Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell. Mitchell especially was terrific, and if I was feeling one thing above all else leaving the movie, it was me still wishing he would have been cast as Lando in the Young Solo film.

Also, Shea Whigham was looking (and acting) like the second coming of Lt. Dan here.

Honestly i would have taken a whole movie of Reilly and the Japanese pilot becoming friends and adjusting to life on the island. With obviously us learning about Kong and the Skull Crawlers etc along the way

Eh, I'm perfectly fine with what we got.
