Leatherface (2016): A prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Leatherface, the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, will hit cinemas in time for Halloween, it's been confirmed. That's in the US at least.

“To all our leatherface fans out there. The movie will be released in October #texaschainsaw @latigrobman #Leatherface,” producer Christa Campbell announced via Twitter.

Leatherface will serve up the origin story. A teenage Leatherface in the 1970s lives in a mental institution until he escapes with a pack of fellow patients. The four teens kidnap a young nurse and go on the run, pursued by a deranged lawman bent on revenge.

I'm still under the impression that this garbage won't actually end up getting released. Just burn it already and sell the rights.

Can't post it since it's a red band trailer, but I can't tell if it looks good or not... It could go either way.

Didn't even know a trailer had been released. I'll probably check it out but I'm not expecting much from it.

Reboot, prequel to reboot, sequel to original 1974 film and now prequel to that original film. What a mess.

On the plus side, "Inside" was f***ing awesome. But didn't they already do a prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I think this is a prequel to the original 1974 movie, whereas the other one was a prequel to the remake. At this point, it doesn't really matter.:oldrazz:

LOL, but the Sheriff character is in this... he was in the remake, not the original. But like you said, it really doesn't matter. This series is pretty much the Bayformers or Resident Evil of the horror genre.

I do love Inside, that would be the only reason why I'd watch this.

Yeah, that's the only reason I'm at least mildly interested in this. Well, that and it's nice to see Stephen Dorff still getting work, even if he's slumming it.

In the few reviews that I've read, ''the best since the original'' has appeared a few times. Not sure how much that means considering the majority of the sequels/reboots/prequels have been mediocre to garbage.

Here's a Behind the Scenes video. May contain spoilers.

Eh, I've seen so many times where a review has said "this is the best since the original" and the movie ended up being a complete piece of **** so I still have my reservations about this.

The trailer admittedly looked better than I ever thought it would, but considering this company last gave us Texas Chainsaw 3D, my expectations are extremely low as to how good this will be.

My expectations aren't too high for this, but I must admit that I've liked everything I've seen so far from the trailers. From the early reviews it sounds like it's at least decent which I guess is something considering how bad Texas Chainsaw 3D was. I actually enjoyed the 2003 remake and the prequel from 2006, so it's not like I'm hard to please. Also, I'm very curious to see what the guys behind Inside can bring to this franchise.

At the end of the day, while my expectations aren't particularly high, I do hope that this manages to be good because out of the big slasher icons, Leatherface has easily had the weakest franchise considering how many terrible installments have plagued it. And it would be nice if this could sort of reinvigorate the series because, if not, then they might as well just retire TCM & Leatherface and call it a day.

Watched this tonight and first off let me just say that if you hated any of the recent films this one probably isn't going to change your mind either. All that being said I actually thought it was decent, but I can see why so many people wouldn't like it. The title is very misleading and it's much less of a slasher and more of Natural Born Killers/The Devil's Rejects kind of horror film. If that's your kind of movie than you'll most likely appreciate it more, but don't expect a whole lot of chainsaw carnage because you aren't going to get it.

As for me, like I said before I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to this franchise, although I hated Texas Chainsaw 3D and Generation is one of the worst films ever. I liked the different direction they took with this movie though and the guys behind Inside definitely know how to still bring the brutality and the gore. There's some really awful acting/dialogue though, especially in the first 10 minutes of the movie, but mad props to Stephen Dorff for giving it his all. Easily my favorite, and the most interesting character in the movie. Lilli Taylor was good too with the little she had to work with and poor Finn Jones (AKA Iron Fist) doesn't make much of an impact even though he has quite a bit of screentime.

I'd give it a 6/10

I feel like the trailer ruined what I now feel like be how it ends in a particular way that connects this to the first story

I didn't care for it. The road-trip/on the run idea sounded terrible from the start and it was.

The ending felt extremely rushed too.

My intrigue for this has increased...as quickly as I see a good review (or even one giving a mediocre rating) I see a bad review and vice versa. Some are saying it's great while others are saying it's trash.

But, all in all, I know that whatever the case may be, there's no way it's worse than part four. :p

I've never really been a fan of the Texas Chainsaw series. In fact the only one I like is the 2003 remake. I don't even like the original. So seeing the trailer for this I think it looks like utter horse **** and I doubt I'll be seeing it.

This was....not great. It was very watchable and had some high points but overall, I felt it was a pretty big disappointment. It just did not feel like a TCM movie until the very last 10 minutes, and that's just not enough for a movie called "Leatherface". I respect what the script was trying to do with the whole "whodunit" aspect but the actual identity of Jed Sawyer is about as transparent as a plastic wrap. Some really great character work here, and the directors still have an amazing eye for visuals but...it just wasn't what I was expecting.

And I did read the script. Which was the same as this movie, except much more fleshed out, and with a crazy ending set-piece that was completely removed here. If you read it, you know what I am talking about. Knowing about the script, and what could have been, makes this much worse. Still it's a decent time waster. Kind of film you watch once, and forget about.

I was honestly shocked by this, it ended up being far better than what I expected it to be and I think it's absolutely a step in the right direction for the series. Considering how terrible parts two, three (which I love, is a guilty pleasure) and four are as well as TCM 3D, that's saying a lot.

Is the film perfect by any means? Absolutely not, but I think the story is at least solid and entertaining enough to label this as a good entry in the franchise. Leatherface has been around since before more popular figures like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, etc. but his series has been plagued by some of the worst movies not only in this franchise, but in the horror genre altogether.

So, for me, at least, this was highly enjoyable and the opposite of TCM 3D. The story made sense, the casting was good and while it's not going to light the world on fire, it at least shows there's some gas left in the tank for this series afterall.
