The Dark Knight Let's debate various aspects of TDK

I'd love for him to be perma-white... but seriously at this point... how? It's not peach make-up. And he's not gonna fall into a vat at the end of the movie, that would be redundant. The scars are the new permanent disfiguration. But the make-up could possibly perma-cake itself on his face I suppose, ala Elizabeth I.

I've always wondered about the "rotted on" effect that they're going for. I'm aware that that's just a look they're trying to achieve... but what if it does sort of stick in the end? What if it's some sort of high powered, ridiculous grade paint with bleach or some kind of wacky chemical in it or something? Hell, you never know. That's not my theory or anything... just sayin': there's always possibilities.

Ahhh, I see. I do remember a Wizard interview with Bettany where he discussed the Joker and said that he wanted the role. He would have been good... but at this point, I can't even imagine anyone but Ledger in it.

Agreed. I would have loved to have seen Bettany do it, but Ledger is going to be CLASSIC. Norm and I were actually at the forefront of the whole Bettany fanboy thing... that's how Norm became Pope Norm I. He was the Pope of Bettanism. ;)

Yeah, that's right. We're weird. I think the theory was that Michael Caine had created the universe, or something like that...?

Indeed you are.

Wow, that's cool. I did not know that.

The perma-white issue never really bothered me. Of course, we STILL don't know the """"""""TRUTH""""""", but chances are he's wearing make-up. I don't care... never did. He is the true embodiment of the character. Heath's Joker will be remembered just as what Nolan has been touting all along: an absolute.

Hell yeah - I'm absolutely stoked.

See, I wouldn't put that past this Joker. He threw it on there sloppily, not giving a damn, and that's why its not perfect. Like the cops try to wash it off, and thats the interrogation room look. Where as the Penthouse scene is him more cleaned up with fresh make-up on. It's an interesting take.

I did not know you guys were such avid supporters of Bettany. Like you and I have said, he would have been great. But Heath IS the Joker. He really gave it his all.

It is also my understanding that Heath went after this role. Like he wanted it really bad and went to Nolan to ask him for it. Am I correct in this as well?

You, me and the rest of the interwebz. I barely check BOF once every few months now.

Hell, I don't check it at all! :D

I suspect that's the case. I remember reading that the makeup was maybe rotting on his face and would permanently mark him somehow.

Well we all know that he talked about his ideas for the character with Nolan and they were the same. But I think I remember an interview with the costume/make-up people where they Heath had a big part in the look of the Joker.

That's awesome!

There are a LOT of possibilities - and I kind of do believe that it'll be a permanent thing somehow, even if only in that way. The rest of him may be pink but his face might be permanently dyed.

And that to me is just as cool, if not creepier, than him being perma-white.

Hey normie, what would you do if good old paul bettany was recasted as senior J?

I did not know you guys were such avid supporters of Bettany. Like you and I have said, he would have been great. But Heath IS the Joker. He really gave it his all.

Oh, man, were were RABID... hell, Norm went so far as to accept a bet with... DV8, I think... DV8 bet him $50 that Hulme would get the role and Norm took the bet saying it would not be Hulme. Never was Bettany mentioned in the bet, so it was a safe bet for Norm. lol.

We were RABID. Hell I did some lame manips of Bettany as Joker. One I was actually fairly proud of, though it was a modification of a Da Vinci Code ad.

It is also my understanding that Heath went after this role. Like he wanted it really bad and went to Nolan to ask him for it. Am I correct in this as well?

I had not heard that, but I won't say you're wrong. It could be true, I've no idea.

Bettany would have been good, I think. I know Norm was like the hugest Bettany supporter ever.

It's just hard to imagine anyone besides Heath in role now. And yes, he did go after it from what I understand. He met with Nolan and they instantly clicked because they had very similar, if not nearly identical, ideas of where, why and how they wanted to take the character to the places he goes in this film - both physically and mentally.

Haha that's awesome. I remember seeing the Da Vinci Code (that was right around the time the Bettany buzz was going around) and thinking he would be fantastic as Mr. J.

See that, to me, makes me appreciate Heath's performance so much more. He wanted this, he took it seriously, and he gave it his all. And he did it for us. For all us nerdy little fans. He did it for us. And it's just amazing. I have nothing but respect for what he did.

I always kind of thought Vincent Cassel was a good fit for the Joker visually. Not sure if he would be able to do a good American accent, though. And he's older, so he lacks the youthful vitality that Ledger brought to the role instead.

Though, I will say this about my previous candidates for TDK roles: I think Eckhart is going to do fabulous. But I'll aaaaallllways sort of wonder what that role would have been like with Liev Schreiber.

I personal believe the Joker works best when he doesn't have a past. From his first appearance until the Killing Joke he had no background. He was just a maniac. Moore tried to explain the Joker's background, then that got into '89, so now some people I talk to think the Joker's real name is Jack Napier. he works better without any explanation or justification. He's like Hannibal Lecter until we find out about family history.

Starling asked him about his background, his family, how he became what he was and he replied 'Became? I simply am.' That's how I want my Joker, just a wanker, a pure nature of force that is intent upon pointless destruction of all authorities. Like in the Man Who Laughs Batman can't handle the Joker, he was prepared for the rapists and murders but not him. He isn't prepared for the man who is the complete opposite of him, someone who uses violence to enforce the law, but to destroy it.

Or in the Long Halloween where he has a crop duster and he's going to gas the whole city, was it 4th july? On the sole reasoning that he couldn't handle Holiday stealing his press and by killing the whole crowd he might just kill Holiday.

Schrieber would have been great... and Eckhart was another out of nowhere pick. But I think everyone here is in agreement that Eckhart's gonna own. I haven't seen a single complaint about him.

I directed that at the trolls :cwink:

I believe it was New Year's Eve

He will definitely own! Certainly no complaints from my corner. He's been great in all the stuff I've seen him in.

I just want to see some damn footage of the man, already. That next trailer can't come any sooner.

POPE. OF. BETTANISM. :o

Oh I agree 100% - I know Bettany would have been great but I just don't care now, Heath's performance looks unbelievably good. I can't wait. And if that's true - that Heath went after the role. Wow, just wow.

I always felt Bettany should have been the Joker. Oh well!

He would have been awesome! But dude... Ledger is so good it scares me. So, no complaints from me, ya know?

I haven nothing but respect for Heath, period. When he did I said the thing that bothered me most was that I was just becoming acquainted with his work and I felt like I'd just lost my new favorite actor before I really had the chance to fully appreciate his talents.

Spot on. In my view, Joker needs no origin. I think that having Joker wear makeup is one of the ways that Nolan and Ledger chose to distance what they're doing from Batman 89, both visually and conceptually because there was no point at all in repeating what's already been done, and if they had to drop a guy in chemicals it would have been too close. Doing it this way, with a different look that implies a different origin (with none actually given) is probably the best possible thing they could do for the movie.

Is there any word on when we can expect the next trailer?

Yeah, dude. YEAH.

I'm sort of out of the loop on that front. I keep hearing with Speed Racer since it wasn't with 10,000 BC. Anyone know?

Man, I sorta hope that's not true... I have NO intention of seeing Speed Racer. I never watched the cartoon (I would watch five seconds of it and get bored) and I loathe the Wachowskis and everything they stand for.

However, at least I could download the trailer if that happened...

So...

Gordon's part of the S.W.A.T. team, eh? Possibly the squad leader? He's Lieutenant, after all...

gordonjail.jpg

...and what about his episode with the Batsignal? What made him do it? Was he pushed into a tight spot with the press or the rest of the force? Or is it just one person?

From the footage in the prologue, we know he hesitates for at least a moment before destroying it.
