The times were different then. Kids today are a lot more used to seeing darker programs on TV. I can easily see parents taking kids in the 8-10 year range to see it even if it is dark. Btw, you want to talk about a Batman movie suffering at the box office, look at Batman and Robin. The movie barely made enough money to cover its budget, which is in stark contrast to Batman Returns. While BR wasn't as successful as its predecessor, it still made a killing at the box office.I was pretty surprised by how many dislikes I came up with when I really thought about it.
Also, I've been saying for some time that this thing might suffer at the box office because it will be darker. Remember the complaints about Batman Returns? Its box office suffered as well.
Nolan is going for the teens and adults, but you don't easily replace that kid revenue.
