Live-Action DBZ Set to Shoot in Montreal

I guess you're right. I really hope this Movie will get a Casshern treatment though. Any attempt at trying to make it look too realistic will utterly fail. With the heavy fantasy, chinese folklore involved and totally over the top and exaggerated characters, a unique visual style is the only way to go.

Yeah, I hope they keep the uniqueness of what makes it dragonball Z. I'm 100% confident that it CAN be achieved with the right director. Too many amazing comics have been translated from page to screen accurately for me to believe otherwise. Just look at Sin City and 300, they're characters were done EXACTLY as they are in the comic.

I'd love for DBZ to get the same treatment. I know an audience would just eat it up. If America loved PotC and Transformers, they're going to ***** themselves when they witness Dragonball Z in Live Action. :woot:

Sin City and 300 also required no superhuman feats. Dragonball does.

Marv jumping through a police car and tossing people 30ft seemed pretty superhuman to me. The main thing in DBZ is martial arts battles (Kung Fu Hustle) with the occasional laser beam (Cyclops from X-men), throw in some flying (The Matrix) and you have Dragonball Z.

Those things aren't too hard to produce these days as CGI becomes cheaper. Each of the Star Wars prequels cost $115 Million and they made 700 million each. I think with the same budget a Dragonball Z movie could be just as great, especially since half the series takes place in big open fields. The only sets they'd have to built would be Master Roshi's house and Goku's mountain shack.

That frees up the budget for explosions and laser beam fights. :woot:

if they have Nappa, you know they gotta get Goldberg...

I still think this is a huge mistake. Will there be American or Japanese actors? What will the story be like?

It may very well be a bad idea. Looking at my considerable DVD collection I see that I only own 4 movies done my Fox and those 4 films are lacking in some department. For example X-men, Fantastic 4, Terminator 3. I don't know perhaps its because the directors didnt know what they were doing, but Fox worries me. I don't know if I trust DBZ in the hands of the people who made "Rise of the Silver Surfer" then again that might have been all Tim Story's fault and not the studios. I don't know.

Terminator 2 is a classic, I forget if Fox did it thought, but then again...T2 had James Cameron. Maybe its all about the director?

The Marv thing is easily simulated. Superspeed, consistant flight and laser beams are a little harder to do. Notice how Cyclops' beam is used only sparingly? Also, if one shoots on a big field or something like that, that requires for the place to be closed off, and you need to build paths for the camera crew. Especially if you want them flying, you need to have whole things set up. I doubt a DBZ film is able to invest that much into CGI. Which is exactly why they should start with Dragonball.

Just because you can move at super speed doesn't mean you do it at every second during a fight. Ever seen Superman throw down? He doesn't constantly move at light speed the whole fight. In the Matrix did Neo suddenly turn into the Flash during the finale fight with Agent Smith? Short Answer, No.

Next, Laser beams aren't that hard to do and will probably cost cheaper than the fight choreography. I mean, really...its a stream of bright colored light hitting other streams of bright colored light. No, moving parts, No internal mechanism to animate. Just a Stream of light that often ends with an explosion. As far as CGI goes you couldn't ask for a cheaper or easier effect to do. Oh, and as for Cyclops...he was horribly under used in all the X-men films.

And Lastly, who cares if they have to close off a field and build crap for the camera crew that's standard procedure. I'm 100% positive that upon filming a DBZ movie one would discover that the least difficult aspect to get right would be how we setup and move the cameras. :whatever:

Had I not already seen the Matrix Revolution which was as far as I'm concerned Dragonball Z in suits without the Ki blasts, I would be more inclined to say it couldn't be done. However, the Wachowski brothers have already seen fit to grace us with video footage saying it can.

Except the Matrix Revolution was backed by a huge budget based on the success of the two prior movies. DBZ doesn't have that. As for super speed. Neither Neo or Supes use super speed in combat. The Z-Warriors do. This has often been shown.

Well this is a film so things are going to be a little different. So, expect to see kung fu action that the world can actually see without having the eyes of a saiyan. Not Saying they can't find a way to show that they're moving super fast and the audience can see but the lower level characters can't. Show the super speed in small bursts throughout the fights, like in the Matrix.

Revolutions cost 150 million and Transformers cost 147 Million to make. I'm sure Fox has the green to match Transformers at least...

If they are in fact using the saiyan/Vegeta saga as the basis for this movie, I see it as an ensemble piece that separates into 4 plot lines and merges together again in the third act. The 4 plots being:

1. Goku running serpent road/training with Kaio
2. Gohan/Piccolo
3. The Z Fighters training with Kami
4. Bulma, Roshi, Oolong, and Puar searching for the dragonballs

As far as the ethnicity(sp?) of the actors. I consider it a secondary issue. This is just my opinion, but I don't consider the DB characters to be either American or Asian. Because the "Earth" that they live in is not the same as ours. They don't live with the same countries and borders as we do, and are never identified as being part any said group. Again, just my opinion.

Then again, if Fox were willing to spend the time and the money(which they're not), they could try to do what Spielberg and Jackson are gonna try to do with Tintin and try to create photoreal CGI characters.

I could kind of see Phil Morris (most recently Martian Manhunter on Smallville) play Piccolo. Cillian Murphy would be pretty good as Frieza. The z-characters have always looked American or white..I personally think they should just do that if this happens. I can't really imagine an Asian person playing Goku or Vegeta. They might as well make this movie seeing how there definitely lots of fans who want this made despite those that don't. Just let them go on but in the meantime..it doesn't hurt to pray that FOX doesn't handle this movie

God, no. Cillian Murphy is a great actor, one of my favorites, but he should NOT portray Freeza. Freeza should be CGI.

Yeah he's perfect for Nappa. Lately, my pick for Raditz has been Christian Bale. I seriously doubt they'd get him though. :csad:

I can't really see Goldberg as Nappa, Nappa is the type of character that's completely arrogant & ignorant, Goldberg is more of a serious, silent type. And Christian Bale is a horrible choice for Raditz.

Nappa, serious and silent? Are we talking about the same Nappa? Sure, he was never overconfident or mocked his enemies ever.

I really hope this is for real this time... not canceled like the last time I heard this rumor.

It's pretty easy to do a zanzoken with Adobe After effects. As far as "Super Speed" goes that's all I really want to see.

He was talking about Goldberg, not Nappa.

Goldberg looks just like Nappa and besides the last time I checked it was called acting for a reason. All he would have to do is laugh wickedly and scream his head off when he became irritated. Pretty much what Nappa did until Vegeta killed him.

I still think Bale would be a great Raditz. :oldrazz:

CGi costs money, money that would be better spent on a Big Bang Attack or a Kamehameha that annihilates a mile stretch of land and ends with a mushroom cloud. Why waste valuable SFX money on something that can be easily accomplished with Stan Winston's creature make up? I mean the dude has worked on The Terminator, Jurassic Park, The Monster Squad, and Predator! I'm sure they could easily pull off Freeza.

I wouldn't mind his tail being CG at some points during the film, but not Freeza all the time. That would eat up the sequel budget. Imagine how much it would cost to have him interacting with all the live actors!

Naaah, Cillian in Make up would be great. :woot:

Cillian in great make up and prosthetics would be dreamy.

And more efficient.

Cillian would make a HORRIBLE Freeza, end of story. Freeza should be CGI.
