As for Hugh Jackman as Goku I wouldn't have a problem with that IRL he is a lot like Goku and that could help him bring the character to life. I do believe he is a talented actor. If he were to get the part I wouldn't be upset by that.

However, he's a hueg star now and would probably cost like 15-20 million. Too much when we only have like 100+ million to spend overall. We can find someone just as good for far less.

I think we need someone asian, or at least asian looking. It's not that I just want asian actors, after all I don't have a problem with Ray Park as Vegeta. But I simply can't picture Jackman as the childlike Goku that was raised by his grandfather and trained in the forms of martial arts in the secluded mountains.

Hugh Jackman is way too old. And if DBZ starts filming in 08, Jackman will be busy doing Wolverine.

Goku represents a lot of things in the beginning of Z, one of them being youth. I don't see youth when I see Jackman.

Johnny Yong Bosch

Wow! The Ex-Power Ranger? I have to admit that might not be such a bad idea, he does have a very youthful looking/wholesome face. Immediately upon seeing his profile picture I thought he might make a good Goku.

As for Goku, yeah Jackman is too busy with Wolverine and too old. JYB is a pretty good choice.

Has this movie been confirmed by anyone other than Anime News Network? It's not that they haven't been reliable in the past, but this is BIG news.

DarkSuperman, I never said all of the aliens should be CGI, just Kami & Freeza. That's not all of the aliens, that's only two. I actually think Perfect Cell & Super Buu should be portrayed by real actors.

When Fox first anounced they bought the rights to make the film in 2002, they had the art department whip up a teaser poster for it and leaked it to the web:

Last I remember they were talking to Roland Emmerich about directing it, and they wanted a three story arc, they wanted action, and they wanted the tone to be like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They were really gearing up for it. The DBZ creator was on board helping but he left due to the fact that Fox didn't want to use the original names in the show that sounded Japanese like Goku-but still wanted Kakarot and Vegeta. Since American actors would be playing the roles, Fox felt it would look too goofy. The creator also wanted an all Japanese cast but Fox nixed that early. I think they were talking to Hugh Jackman about playing Goku for a bit. But the fan favorite for Goku at the time was Jerry Occonnel.
Jerry_oconnell.jpg

I actually did a manip of Occonnel with the Goku Hair and he looked like Goku. And you can buy him as a happy go lucky guy. Even though he is tall and Goku and Vegeta are not supposed to be tall guys.

The other favorite was Dana Carvey in Makeup as Roshi, or whatever American name they were going to give him.

I remember it was a go...and then all of a sudden no one heard anything, and Emmerich was rumored to be pitching a movie about global warming. Someone called Fox's development department (someone in the press that could call and get through to that department) and was told that they were not doing it now and it got put on the backburner. I think it was sometime around the start of 2003. Was before Emmerich got the greenlight to do The Day After Tommorrow.

Heres some of my cast choices; I'm going to have to rewatch alot of DBZ to get more. Goku and Vegeta should be played by actors with martial arts backgrounds;

Goku - Jason Scott Lee

Hes the right age for the older father-like Goku in DBZ while being in shape with the martial arts skills to match. Hes got a cool voice too. I saw him recently in the TimeCop TV sequel and he'd be so right for the role.

Vegeta - Dan Southworth http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0816185/

Great badass martial artist and actor. Has the perfect voice for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CFElM4_Ecc

Frieza - Jet Li

Bulma - Rachel Blanchard http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004761/

Piccolo - Dennis Haysbert

Piccolo re-imagined as an older/sage mentor figure to Goku and his son for the screen.

Krillin - Jackie Chan

Re-imagined to be taller or shot in a similar manner to Lord of the Rings.

Chichi - Ziyi Zhang

I don't see many of those happening. Especially the last 2. Jackie is way too old for krillin and Zhang Ziyi though I love her isn't versed enough in comedic acting to play Chichi. Also, her accent might be a problem. :csad:

Dan Southworth or as I like to call him VERGIL from Devil May Cry. Might make a good Goku though.

I remember that poster! I'm not going to lie I really dug the tag line. "All they need is seven and the universe is theirs." Even now all these years later I still remember it and mouth those words whenever new DBZ movie information leaks.

Really? I always pictured Krillin older by DBZ but just acting comedic and juvinelle at times.

With Zhang Ziyi, you may have a point. I wasnt thinking of making her character over the top comedic (since Bulma has that covered); but the accent is fine. She can just hone it to make it sound more Japanese. IMO this film should take place in Japan. Making Goku into a white American would probably be the death of the movie with the fans.

Dan Southworth plays a better villian.

It should neither play in America nor Japan. Simply because DBZ-earth isn't our earth. It's a made up world where the earth is one united nation under one President, if I remember correctly. I also don't want to see any familar buildings from our cities. DBZ towns have a unique style, and I'd want to see them in the Movie.

Man I really hope this happens, and Ray Park MUST be Vegeta. I remember back in 02 my pic for Goku was Russell Wong, he's probably too old now.

Russell Wong was also my choice for Goku way back then.

A funny Asian chick with a good accent ? Hmmm ... how about that chick from California Dreams ?

Edit:

Her name's Jennie Kwan. Looking at her birth date, I'd say she's old enough to play Chi-chi.

As for this Dan Southworth guy. He'd be a good choice for Goku with Johnny Yong Bosch being the older version of Gohan.

Now ... for Krillin ?

Edit:

How about Bradley James Allan ? At 5'4, he could pull it off. I mean martial arts wise he's ready. If need be, they can re-image the dude to knock off 5 inches or however tall Krillin is  Not too sure about his acting skills though.

I was thinking maybe Takeshi Kaneshiro for Goku. But he'd have to seriously buff up.

Cmon Southworth is way too good at playing evil for Goku.

When he smiles or laughs, you know something really horrible just happened.

The Gazette

They reported it first. Not sure how reliable of a source they are.

CGI costs an incredible amount of money to produce. The only reason CGI characters are used in Star Wars at all are for 2 reasons only. #1 George Lucas has more money than god and doesn't care how much it cost to make. #2 Those Characters that are CGI only appear for small amount of time unless extremely pivotal to the story.
Actually not true. George financed the prequels, and brought them in for cheap. He spent about 50 million for episode 1 (confirmed on the making of DVD in a meeting with George and the ILM department heads), EP about 65-70 mill (again confirmed on the DVD making of) and 3 cost about 100 mill. CGI proved to be cheaper than makeup in a lot of cases. Jar Jar was originally supposed to be the Ahmed Best in the body suit, and a CGI head replacement. You can see in the making of DVD, in an on set meeting between Lucas and John Knoll, where Knoll goes down on the price breakdown of the head replacement and the full CGI version, with the full cgi version being cheaper to do. Lucas at that points complains about the cost of the suit they had Best wearing. And you can see in the meeting when he says how much it will cost to make in both films, he tells them we can not go over this budget at all. And they did things to not go over it. Lucas kept a tight reign on not going over the budget as he was paying for it out of pocket.

I think I also remember hearing about the guy who had played Worf being approached for Picolo. Weather it is true or not, I don't know. But I do believe that they had approached him.
