Luke Cage Luke Cage General Discussion Thread - Part 1

Speaking of the Claire/Luke connection: Daredevil has sex with Luke's ex (from the comics) and Luke has sex with Iron Fist's ex (from the comics). I guess Danny will have to sleep with one of Punisher's former comic book flames to keep the trend going, heh.

Did Clarie sleep with Matt in Daredevil? I know they kissed and she wanted to have a relationship with him but backed off when she realized how damaged Matt was....I just don't remember them having sex.

I've only read the last few pages of this thread but I can't relate to anyone who thinks this show wasn't good or was underwhelming, the worst of the bunch, etc. This was the absolute best superhero show produced yet, IMO. I don't care if it doesn't have the fancy choreography of DD, it was miles better in terms of quality and this is coming from someone who loved DD, and saw it as the best in the genre before LC came along.

The way LC managed to be topical yet entertaining at the same time, with a rootable hero, four compelling villains, and the absolute best representation of women in any superhero show or movie I've seen was truly amazing to watch. This show just set a new standard for what superheroes can be...it's in a league by itself, as far as I'm concerned.

I loved the first half but the second half, particularly the last couple episodes lost steam with me more than any of the other shows, Diamondback quickly got boring, Cottonmouth was a much more interesting villain, the final fight was weak and the finale lacked a satisfying end for me. Felt like they were intentionally holding back for Defenders instead of focusing on a satisfying conclusion. I also wasn't a fan of the Luke/Claire romance, they lacked the spark that was present with Misty and Jessica.

My biggest issue is killing off [blackout]Cottonmouth[/blackout] too early and Diamondback not living up to the hype.

I almost feel like this would have been better if [blackout]Black Mariah killed Cottonmouth in the finale and took over Harlem's Paradise[/blackout] with some set up for Diamondback in season 2.

But Cheo probably wasn't sure if he'd get a second season so put as much as he could in this one.

And I think it's safe to say Power Man is going to get a second season. I mean he broke Netflix for a day.

I could easily see it being combined with iron fist for a heroes for hire adaption. So they get 2 birds with one stone.

Problem with that is who runs the show? What tone will it be? Who's villains?

It'll either end up putting Luke in Danny's show or Danny in Luke's show. That does a mild disservice to all the set up that happened in the finale.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a Heroes For Hire show, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to part with the "blackness" of the Luke Cage show to make it happen.

I just finished the show. Unfortunately very underwhelming for me. I liked a lot what they have done with some of the main characters and I hope they will show up again very soon but badly shot action scenes and the overall story was nothing to get exciting about. It is nowhere near Daredevil season 1 and season 2 in my eyes.

It felt a little too mediocre and like a lifeless version of Daredevil season 1 with too many genre cliché. First sign for me that Marvel netflix universe is becoming stale...most episodes felt more like: been there, done that. and the whole Diamondback arc was ridiculous: "buhu, daddy issues".

I was really looking forward to this show but I experienced it as quite boring to be honest and only kept on watching because I want to become Claire's and Misty's best friend. lol

Episode 7 was the only standout episode.

For me, Cottonmouth and Diamondback were both great. I commend the show for being bold enough to do what they did with the former. And weaving multiple villains into the main plot produced a story that was compelling from beginning to end, I think.

I would agree that Misty/Luke had more spark than Luke/Claire but Misty has her own romance that I would prefer to see, so I was ok with Luke/Claire.

Been a while since I watched it. Might be misremembering.

p.s. where are all the villains with superpowers of the Marvel universe?!

I wish they had an Iron Fist trailer after the last episode like how the Luke Cage trailer was attached to the end of Daredevil season two.

Fighting the Avengers?

Jessica Jones got to fight a mind controller.

Daredevil fought a fat guy, a ninja and a nut with a gun. But the ninja comes back to life, so that's sort of a power. (And, really, Daredevil's 'super-power' is that he's less blind than the average blind dude, so he's only just super.)

Hopefully Iron Fist will fight someone with some mystical martial arts stuff going on, and not just throw a bunch of non-powered folk around.

And in other news, gosh,
HammerTech sure is better these days than it was back in Iron Man 2. I wonder who's running his company, now that he's in jail? Could that be why so much of it is hitting the street, because the boss is away and the minions are selling product off of the back docks to pad their portfolios? :)

Found the whole show a bit underwhelming. Some of the characters were good (Misty Knight) and i understood the themes the show was aiming for, but the whole plot felt mostly aimless.

I'll start by mentioning how Matthew Murdock and Jessica Jones's jobs and their connections to their superheroics were part of what helped make those shows compeling and shape the characters. In here, Luke Cage is mostly aimless, just doing jobs here and there before having nothing more to do than pursuing Cottonmouth full-time. What made him fresh in the comic books was the fact that he was a guy whose job realy was being a superhero. He might have always been moraly righteous, but the cool thing about him was that he had to make this whole thing be his ends meet. They hint at him being a hero for hire now and then...........only for him to shut down those offers immediately. I honestly found this to be a serious missed oportunity. It makes me wonder why he was given a show in the first place, considering they just went with more of a generic super-powered man going against gangsters story.

That said, there were some good moments, like Cottonmouth. I didn't find him that engaging in the first few episodes, but the middle section of the show was gold. [BLACKOUT] I don't even mind Diamondback taking over, since i feel like they had already done the best stories they could with his character. Diamondback's motivation was kinda dumb, but i admit that he was very entertaining to watch. He was more unpredictable than the other gangsters and gave some serious challenge to Luke. Which made his suit a bit of a let down. He was much more threatening when he was just shooting with the judas bullets. [/BLACKOUT]

What exactly is Misty's beef against Luke? Don't get me wrong, she's a GREAT character, but each time she talks to Luke she has such venom and spite for him and i'm just like "girl, whats your problem with this guy, exactly?" I dunno, maybe it's because Luke is the protagonist and we know he's a good guy, its hard for us to see the other side of things, but this guy's out helping Harlem and clearly is trying to bring down the bad guy and all she says to him is "you need to get out of Harlem and let our inept, corrupt police force do its work!"

IMO, goes back to the vigilante discussion she had with Scarfe. And that a bulletproof black man is not only taking the law into his own hands, but is singlehandedly making the NYPD obselete. Since she's dedicated her whole life to working for the system to protect Harlem his methods and efficiency have her questioning her convictions.

She also made a fool out of herself by sleeping with a suspect, even if it was before he was a POI.

Her dirty partner and mentor went to him instead of her for help so that had to have stung.

All these things build up.

I love this because WE know that Luke is a hero, innocent, and a good dude. Misty is also a hero and a stand up woman in her own right. And it shows how good people can be manipulated whether by accident or design to think the good guy is a bad guy. This is doubly more important because Luke is a black man in Harlem wearing a hoodie.

Luke's and Misty's back and forth is really the backbone of this show.

I don't think Matt and Claire ever went past a simple kiss in the first season. As far as the Marvel Universe is concerned, Luke Cage seems to be the biggest womanizer of them all.lol

I'm actually glad that none of main Defenders (Matt, Jessica, Luke, and Danny) have shared lovers so far. Call me old fashion, but I'm never a fan when friends/teammates have gotten involved with each others's former lovers.

Apologies if already mentioned (I'm avoiding spoilers for post ep. 6)

They broke continuity with the MCU by mentioning Obama in episode 6 did they not? Ellis was established as president in Iron Man 3, and most recently was shown to still be in office in Agents of SHIELD season 3.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if not this strikes me as lazy writing, much like showing the MetLife building in Jessica Jones.

I think they did a good thing by not pairing off Luke and Misty, or even insinuating anything beyond their hook-up. It makes way for Danny and Misty without a contrived love angle with Luke. I'd be surprised if they mention it again; emphasizing that Luke and Danny are peters-in-law makes things weird, guys in that situation don't typically become bros.

I'm really rooting for Misty and Danny to happen since it looks to be (and I hope) that Luke and Jessica are a no-go in the MCU.

they mentioned Obama, but did they mention PRESIDENT Obama? for all we know he might have lost against Ellis in 2008 or 2012 but is still a major player in the Democratic party

Yeah it still bothers me a bit that you don't see Stark tower in the skyline.
