Luke Cage Luke Cage General Discussion Thread - Part 1

One of the main positives of Luke Cage is that Method Man exists in the MCU as Method Man.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm almost done with the season and I feel like this series is a notch below both DD and JJ overall. I'm kind of surprised by all of the over-the-top praise this series has gotten so far.

It isn't just you. I'd rank it comfortably at the bottom of the MCU Netflix series. Good, but not great.

When Marvel does have a black superhero in any of their projects, they are portrayed as very cool and very bad ass:

Give me hope that Marvel Studios can do these two right:

After thinking about it, I think one of things I think made this feel lesser than DD and JJ....is Mike Colter. I feel bad for saying this because I like Colter a lot and he does have natural charm to him...but his acting was really awkward in a lot of places here. I don't think he OWNED the role like Cox with Murdock, Ritter with Jessica, Downey with Stark, Evans with Cap, or even Mackie with Falcon.

I think that's kinda the general consensus

Don't be surprised by the praise either, it'll probably die down. Everything superhero related (save for Fan4stic) get's a huge boost of "This is teh greatest thing evah" that dies down a few months later when the hype dies

Loved the show and so happy my friend's and family who would never watch any super hero besides Batman or Superman are loving this.

I just felt like I could relate to everything from the dialogue to the setting and I'm glad people are streaming the hell out of this show.

Top 5 on Netflix

And when "critical" praise isn't up to the hype's standard we always goto box office or ratings. So regardless if you all think it's up to par with DD or JJ the public likes it's first season more than those.

DAMN. Fuller House is the Top?! That show got annihilated by critics, I guess it goes to show you people like what they like lol

I don't know what to make of that list. Netflix keeps all that data a secret. Perhaps symphonyAM interviewed a sample.

For me, this is kinda good as JJ and below DD. It's not as nearly as phenomenal and revolutionary as some critics said.

It's slow and sometimes tiring, but it has fun moments. Luke Cage is hommage to blaxploitation cinema and the proof is great soul/funk soundtrack, cheesy villains and accurate depiction of community in general, showing us all kinds of guys we can see on the streets.

I liked it, didnt love it like either DD series but I made it all the way through unlike JJ. The cast really elevated what was a rather bland story at times and some pretty by the numbers action sequences, nothing memorable like DD had. It didnt have me on the edge of my seat like DD but it was good enough to keep me interested in the Netflix Marvel world which is going along pretty damn well and building up to Defenders being something really cool.

I hope IF grabs me more but at least LC is another well cast hero to add to the list and look forward to him interacting with all the others.

I'm on episode 8 now and while I'm enjoying it, I also get everyone's critique on the show. This is definitely a different kind of superhero show though and I'm glad they made it as black as they could. The music, the dialogue, it felt comfortable watching this. I could see myself in these barbershop conversations and such. Perfect for a Luke Cage show.

Well you know, I think all of us feel that way about certain shows and movies. I personally never got all the hype over DD season 1. I thought it started slow, picked up in the middle but ultimately, it wasn't nearly as good to me as some fans and critics claimed. I much preferred the second season of DD, even with its flaws. Elektra and Punisher were far more interesting to me than Fisk.

I haven't finished JJ season 1 yet but from what I have seen, it's a very good show. However, it hasn't drawn me in like DD season 2 or Luke Cage, which to me gets better and better as the season progresses. It's definitely deserving of all the praise, IMO.

Is this just for the last year (12 months)? If so then OK I guess, but if not then there is NO WAY S1 of DD is not near the top (or at the top) of this list. The Ranch and Longmire got more viewers then DD S1? Uh, no.

I might a bit late, but I just now noticed that Alfre Woodard also played in Civil War (the woman who talked with Stark about her son while waiting for the elevator). Since she is playing a different character there (Miriam Spencer), isn't this a continuity error, since both Luke Cage and Civil War are set in the same universe?

Yup. It is. Weird how Marvel has let that happen.

Nah, everyone has their twin.

Wow, the Marvel/Netflix shows have all killed it.

She isn't the first person to play more than one role in the MCU. But that isn't a continuity error.

Just finished 1st season.

What a show! While not on the same level as DD (both seasons) or JJ, I thought it was still pretty well done.

Really like how Claire got with Luke. Honestly, from DD's first season, I expected her to end up with Matt. I was very surprised how big of a role she had here and how nicely they set up a relationship with Luke. I haven't read the comics, but I heard Claire will end up as an aid for the Defenders carrying the name Night Nurse, right? They even dropped that name as a reference at one scene.

Misty was a nice addition. I am wondering what will happen with her character later on. Maybe she will end up as help for the Defenders too?

Claire spotting that martial arts brochure was a nice reference to Iron Fist. I guess she will make her next appearance there.

The villains - Mariah was a very well done villain and I really hate that she got away with everything. Shades was good too. Liked how precise he was and always thinking ahead. Looking forward to see more of him. As for Cottonmouth, I really expected him to be the main villain (from the trailers). Was very surprised that he got killed so early on.

My only gripe - Diamondback. They set him up to be a very menacing underworld figure from the early episodes, but when he actually appeared, I was a bit...disappointed. Don't get me wrong, he had very good moments, but most of the time he was acting as a typical cheesy film villain giving monologues during fights and had weird delivery of lines at some places. In my opinion, a step down for the series from the brilliant villains Fisk and Kilgrave. And last, but not the least, i thought his suit during the final fight was "Flash metahuman" level of cheesiness. Still, looking forward to see him again and I liked how they set up Berstein experimenting on him. Wonder what will become of him.

The soundtrack - excellent. Liked the choice of hip-hop as its main style, but those Jazz songs at Harlem's Paradise were good too.

I guess now we can only wait for The Defenders next year with Iron Fist and The Punisher filling in the gap. My prediction is that The Defenders will start as Matt getting his hands on Luke's files from Fish and getting him out of prison. I honestly can't wait! The reveals today that Sigourney Weaver will be the villain (excellent choice!) and that Defenders group shot got my hype through the roof!

As for Luke Cage - I give the 1st season 8/10. So far, Netflix/MCU is 4/4. Great consistency. Keep up the good work!

P.S Waiting for Iron Fist is going to be hard.

Not a continuity error since Marvel has used actors in multiple roles before.

Tony Curran played Finn Cooley in daredevil season 2 and Bor in Thor The Dark World.

Laura Haddock played Meredith Quill in Guardians Of The Galaxy and a autograph seeker in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Enver Gjokaj played Agent Daniel Sousa on Agent Carter and a policeman in The Avengers.

The guy who originally played Thanos also played one of Crossbones goons in Civil War.

Plus Stan Lee pops up as different people in cameo roles all the time in the MCU.

I guess you have a point, then.

Stan Lee doesn't count, though. His cameos are a different thing that what I am saying.

New to this forum so I am sorry if this has been discussed. But, I have only been through 4 episodes. But, how does Shield not come to investigate Luke? Especially, after he appears on tv. Yes, I know the real world reason...two different networks. But, it just makes no sense. Especially, with Shield out looking for Inhumans.

Thanks!

Shield was operating silently after the collapse in the winter soldier. Shield is essentially a non factor for everything in the mcu but the tv show, and the show is just recently relaunching shield as a public entity.
