The Dark Knight Rises Mad as a Hatter:The Official Jervis Tetch Thread

I might be in the minority that thinks Mad Hatter would make a hell of a villain in a Batman film, if they character/story is handled the right way.

A man brainwashing children and having them commit crimes for him is, to put it bluntly, ****ed up, and it'd make for great psychological moments. Especially for Batman.

I'm with you, and agree with this.

Just the other day I was watching an episode of the Young Ones and it got me thinking. I do believe that Rik Mayall would make an awesome Mad Hatter. Though he would end up making us all laugh throughout the movie. The guy is just that damn brilliant. :D

Mad Hatter could be Batman's main villian if done right....Also William Defoe for Mad Hatter.

Just reading up on mad hatter (i'm not exactly an expert on the character)
He could work...
A man with a fixation with "Alice in wonderland" kidnapping young girls (not sure if kidnapping and murder of young girls would be a step too far for Nolan)..
Essentially in this universe Hatter is trying to find "Alice".. Each time he thinks he's found her but eachtime "Alice" dissapoints him, causing him to dispatch of this "Alice" and then go hunting for a new one...

As a tool to introduce new characters perhaps Barbara Gordon could be one of his "Alices".

Too dark perhaps?

That's basically my idea, except I had the reason he's searching for Alice was because he was a single father who always played Alice in wonderland with his daughter, and when his daughter gets killed, he snaps and fully becomes the "Hatter."

If youve ever read Arkham Asylum A Serious House. Youll understand why Andy should definately be the Mad Hatter.

Jeff Daniels.
.
If you can track it down, catch him in a psychological thriller called "Chasing Sleep"
He's got a great 'creepy dad' side of him that could make for an interesting child murderer.

I'm digging this idea a lot, that would give the Hatter a new layer, I think it is the best reason for the Mad Hatter to commit these crimes, though I don't think he will be able to carry a movie.

i'm not too familiar with mad hatter in batman .. but i like these ideas .. really twisted ..
regarding him carrying the movie .. i think chris nolan will add at least another villain ..

Timothy Spall is the only actor who can play the Mad Hatter. As for approach, he should be the creepy paedophile who kidnaps children named 'Alice', the character he's become in recent years.

I would take away the pedophile representation of the character, I think that Infinity9999x's aproach would be more suitable.

Weve already had a child killer in form of the Penguin. Mad Hatter should just be some weird pedophile. Who kidnaps young girls, dressess them up in Alice gear and sell them to other pervs. Simple.

^what? really? not being a dick, i'm just not sure if u are joking or not....

...i think the classic mad-hatter story would be fine. Crazy genius never had any friends as a kid, was always made fun of.... is obsessed with "alice's adventure in wonderland" and begins speaking in rhymes. doctors determine that he is unstabe and dillusional so they send him to arkham. after some addition "help" from the joker, the hatter escapes.
it is halloween and young barbara gordon (who has just moved to live with her adoptive father, jim gordon) disobeys gordons orders not to go trick-r-treating. she is chaced by thugs who intend to do unspeakable things to her. the mad hatter saves her and takes her to his "wonderland" where she is to be his Alice. when she refuses, Hatter becomes increasingly discourteous.

Gordon rebuilds the bat symbol to call batman and get his help. of course they have been secretly meeting already, gordon just takes advantage of the opportunity to openly talk to batman.
It is batmans (and maybe robin?) job to find her. Of course batman saves the day.... and having saved gordons daughter, begins to restore his good name with the people of gotham.

dont think this should be the main story of the third film...but could be a fun side story.

oh, and for cast??? maybe Ben Foster? he can play a GREAT crazy person :)

Can't really see Foster in the role, but I like the idea of Timothy Spall.

I know his name always gets thrown around for every villain but I have always thought that Paul Bettany would be great as the Mad Hatter

I had a an idea similar to this as well, only after a loved one, be it a daughter or wife or what-have-you, he comes across one of the rabbits from Batman Begins. He then gets affected by the fear toxin and start hallucinating and seeing images from wonderland, Maybe he gets chased by the Jaberwocky or something. When the drug wears off his mind has snapped and he believes himself to be the Hatter.

Hatter should just be a raving lunatic. No back story. He's just a squat-looking guy in bizzare clothes who talks gibberish.
He doesn't attack children but shoots random people and steals their hats. That's all he's interested in.

Ehh, nah. That's just too uninteresting. And it's almost as goofy as the "mind control hats" version of him. If you're going to have him be the guy who spouts gibberish all the time, at least have it be like Loebs version where he has the questionable affinity for children and having them act out tea-parties with him.

I think Marilyn Manson should play the Mad Hatter. It may seem like an odd choice, but I think he would do a good job.

I love the idea of this character and would love to see it brought to the screen. I always got a laugh out of the scenes in The Long Halloween where Hatter and Scarecrow have these weird arguments back and forth.
One of the main reasons that I don't see this character happening now, is because of the Burton film. I'm assuming a third Batman would only be a few years away, and probably too close to Burton's Wonderland film to make it seem like an original idea.
Great to see others that like the character!

Maybe Matt Damon?? LOL How about the puppet master guy from Heroes?

That was exactly what I thought of when I first saw him there.Even though I don't see the Mad Hatter as the main advesary in a film,I could picture him working for the main advesary in a role somewhat simular to Carmine Falcone or even the Scarecrow's role in comparison to Ra's Al Ghul's role in Batman Begins.

On another thread here,I suggested Jervis Tetch as a delusional scientist or whatever who works for Black Mask (or whichever crime boss) who drugs "Alices" off the street to be prostitutes at Black Mask's request. This would borrow slightly from Liam Neeson's movie taken.

From what I gathered in Arkham Asylum GN,is that Jervis has an obsession with all children cause they dont have to face adult responsibilities and adult way of life. He grows an obsession with Blonde girls cause they are "shameless little b*****s" in his own words. So he dressess up as the Mad Hatter as its his favourite s character from his favourite novel. Wether his obsession with blond girls comes from Alice, his pedophillic attraction with blond girls or the fact he thinks all blonds are like Paris Hilton and doesnt like them for that reason,I dont know.

I've always liked the idea of The Hatter being a pedophile who kidnaps young children and brainwashes them. His favorite kids are blondes, but he can act like Scarecrow from TDK. A small, but meaningful part that shows the larger universe
