Imagine Silence of the Lambs or other Hannibal Lecter stories and imagine that Hannibal was just this goofy eccentric psychiatrist that people believed was a cannibal but really wasn't. The real cannibals were Will Graham and Clarice Starling who framed Hannibal Lecter and ruined his reputation. That's kind of like what Maleficent is like.

That's the lamest thing I ever heard of  lol

seriously that is dissappointing

saw it last night
while the visuals were great and jolie delivered an amazing performance as expected, really wasn't a fan of how the movie really hammered what a heroic/sympathetic character she is and how seemingly everyone in the world besides Aurora is evil, even in the films opening it tells u this is the REAL story

i guess its kind of similar to how in the original star wars darth vader was ruthless and mysterious, where we only knew tiny details about him throughout the series and then we see his redemption in his final moments, then the prequels portray him as a whiny brat for the most part

it's kind of the same here, Maleficent's actions are kind of justified but at the same time, they kind of waffle on certain parts to make her likable
like

she tries to lift the curse off because she takes a shine to Aurora but can't/she constantly looks over her like a guardian angel throughout her childhood

i enjoyed the film for what it is, but u can't really say that this Maleficent is the same ruthless evil version from the cartoon because apart from looks they are very different

I really think people think Wicked made the Wicked Witch of the West just overall misunderstood and not evil at all, which I kind of get but I see her more like Magneto.

Since being a kid she was treated differently, but she also was always the outside crusader that went against the norm even when it didn't affect her personally. No one did anything to her to make her a sympathetic villain or was the cause of making her a villain, she just had different ideals.

From what I'm reading on Maleficent, I wouldn't say they Wicked-ized her(copyright :o ), it just sounds like they did the cliche sympathetic villain thing, which disappoints me considering I was excited to see it tonight.

The Wickedization (copyrighted! :p) of this film is totes craycray. I read the synopsis:
The king drugs Maleficent and burns off her wings and he keeps them in his trophy room. The rapist undertones are too unsettling. And don't get me started with the Good Fairies neglecting Aurora and Maleficent watches over her.

I cant see teen boys are grown men wanting to see this so I wonder how the box office will go since it has a huge budget

I'm open minded & look to all genres & types of films so color me as one of those few guys who is interested in seeing what this film has to offer. The trailers & TV spots look pretty awesome so I think it'll be good.

I still plan on seeing this. I Sleeping Beauty has a place in my heart as one of the few Disney Princess animated features that resonated with me, if for nothing else than it is a good musical, with a Prince that has an actual personality and a slam-bang action climax.

I have no problem with some kind of reinterpretation going on. I'm guessing we'd get a loud chorus of "They just remade the cartoon" if they had gone in the opposite direction. I hope it does well enough to stay in theaters for a while. I have a friend coming from Sweden at the end of June. She's crazy for Jolie so I hope we get to see it together.

So all reviews I've read say they completely change the character into this sympathetic misunderstood anti hero........**** THAT ****

seriously how do you go from badass leader of the Disney villains to she's not the villain Disney wants she's the villain Disney needs :(

As for the wickedisation people are claiming I've never seen wicked though my sister is a huge fan but at least the wicked witch may have been a ***** but she had logical reasons for hating Dorothy. The little brat stole from her dead relative. That's obvious to see but there has been nothing to even hint at a "tortured past" in maleficent's character when did we stop the idea that a bad guy can simple be a bad guy

Ahh we'll at least we still have kingdom hearts

Is she actually going to be something more than a tool in Master Xehanort's plans?

Thought the film was alright, very silly in places but it wasn't terrible and the 97minutes was perfect timing for the length. I didn't mind the change and I thought this was an interesting perspective of the character but it could have done away with some of the more sillier moments and not have Maleficent become so enamoured with Aurora so quickly.

It just saddens me when Disney's greatest villain gets shortchanged.

We'll judging by this film it seems to be the status quo now for the character.

Though ironically from the popularity of Regina in once upon a time(and I can see why) Disney seem to wanna push the wicked queen again as the big bad

Why are people surprised that Maleficent isn't pure evil here? I always assumed it was going to be a redemption story.

In order to be a redemption story, there needs to be something to redeem. Maleficent's curse is not worth a redemption story.

i expected that Jolie would not have any evil scenes in a Disney big budget movie.

I expected it. I just thought the new brass (like the ex pixar boss)at disney for all theyre boasting of respecting the legacy and classics would actually follow through on that promise

lords knows why I did though

The issue is that in order to make Maleficent look good they turned everyone else in the flick into eithern an ******* or a moron. Seriously the fairy trio is stupid as **** in this flick.

This is what I was hoping would not happen, but figured would. Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain. VILLAIN, that is. Not misunderstood anti-hero. Guess I'll wait for the redbox

I didn't want a redemption story. If anything, I wanted a tragedy. I wanted her to start out as seemingly pure and good, but turn evil, much like Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader. Yes, Vader did get redeemed in the end somewhat, but I'm talking about the prequel trilogy where we see Anakin go over to the dark side.

That's what I would've liked for Maleficent, where we see her making certain choices that lead her down a dark path where she is corrupted and becomes this evil villain.

Maybe they could've had a twist that Aurora ends up as the new Maleficent after choosing a path to follow Jolie's character. That would've been a tragedy story.

Not everything has to be about redemption. Macbeth isn't that kind of plot and it worked out well enough.

Just got back home from seeing it. Count me among those that loved this film. I have a soft spot for SLEEPING BEAUTY. We were more a LOONEY TUNES household growing up, but I had a small collection of the DISNEY classics and SB was my favorite, not least of which was because Maleficent was a great melodramatic, scenery chewing villain. Yes, that's no where near the story they told in this film. On it's own terms though it's wonderful. A grand fantasy adventure leagues ahead of OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL or ALICE IN WONDERLAND. A visual feast which reminded me of THE NEVER ENDING STORY and THE LAST UNICORN in it's storybook imagery. Jolie brings her A game as does Copley and for that matter the rest of the cast. Is it a huge departure? Sure is. Still an entertaining and enchanting tale. My audience at the 10:30am showing in downtown Brooklyn made up of a very age diverse group clapped 3 times during the run time, for what that's worth.

So I read the synopsis of this...yeah I'll pass. Unless my family makes me take them.
